<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>tape one side two <&>14:32 oh yeah clears throat and i just got some <,,><&>3 oh i just got some er queries <,> questions about porirua oh yeah um do you like living in er porirua east? yep yeah yeah what's good about it <,> <{><[>why <[>well laughs well it's um <,,> you know it has <&>15:00 voc <.>mo most facilities and er i've i've always found it er er <,> we've never had any <,> er problems with our neighbours and er um <,> and as i say we you know i've found er the majority of people that i've come in contact with <,> or my family has <,> <.>y you know <,> they've always been er friendly and <,> very helpful you know oh sorry <,,><&>4 oh yeah clears throat um <,> what sort of <.>ch do you think there what sort of are there any changes you'd like to see in porirua itself yeah er <,,><&>3 <.>yeah um <,,> yeah i suppose if you really sat down <.>e <.>e <.>e er what do you <&>16:00 mean in in the <,,> facilities and er and <{><[>and whatsaname <[>yeah yeah yeah i think perhaps one of the one of the er <,> er <,> things that i would have like to have seen was a er i think they put too many of the <,,> you know these ethnic groups together <.>a <.>a all together <{><[>i think i think they should have had them more <,> sort of spread out a bit eh you know <,> um <,,> that's what i would of liked to have seen <[>mm mm you know and um <,> and i think that the these a lot of these ethnic groups that are coming in <,> um <,> i don't think they've been er properly prepared to come in through this <,> you know from coming from the islands yeah you know and once they get here of course they um <,> as i say they're not properly sort of trained you know in our in the western way of life i suppose you could say and consequently of course when they come here they find it <&>17:00 difficult you know and er and i don't think they've given them you know they're giving them enough time to sort of adapt <,> to how things are here <{1><[1>oh i i mean it's just like um you know i've had er relatives come from home you know from gisborne eh come into a big city like this <,> it was bad enough because even though they lived in new zealand <,> er you know laughs i <.>ha hate to be some of these people who come from out of new zealand and dumped into you know especially places like <{2><[2>here and er you know and we tend we tend to run them down you know er <,> a lot of people they you know but to be fair on them er i think you know a lot of them are sort of thrown into the deep end and <{3><[3>er you know you've sort of got to <,> er whatsaname you know help yourself more or less <[1>yeah <[2>yeah yeah <[3>yeah hmm and um <,> and i think it's happened too fast there's too many of them you know MYSELF this is my own personal <{><[>thing <[>yeah oh true <&>18:00 you know <,,> er <,> any facilities you would add? er <,,> well you see i think they've added a lot of facilities since <.>my since we were young because now they've opened up all of the school grounds <,> see one time you weren't allowed to walk through school grounds you could be prosecuted is that right yeah it was trespassing they had notices you know actually <,> um <,,> yeah actually <,> actually yeah they they used used to be a common sight you know er <,> trespassers will <{1><[1>be prosecuted and of course <,> er er school property but now you know i went past one of these schools and they're all playing touch rugby which is a good thing i i think that's <,> that's an added facility in <{2><[2>the south where we had it in our day but er <.>y <{3><[3>you you you no you couldn't use it you know it wasn't made <{4><[4>available to you and consequently of course these things used to <&>19:00 sit there from inhales oh friday till monday or whatever you <{5><[5>know and no that was taboo you know <,> so um <,> i think that's a good thing <{6><[6>um course <,> like like everything else course you know it just takes the odd one to to sort of muck it up you know they er <[1>yeah oh wow <[2>yeah <[3>couldn't use it <[4>yeah <[5>yeah <[6>yeah yeah vandalise some of these places which is a shame really cos they're only cutting their own throat really yeah you know <,> um <,> so that's a facility i think we've GAINED not only here <,> but i think in a lot of them you know <{1><[1>throughout new zealand <,> <{2><[2>so er <[1>yeah <[2>what about er like er clears throat like other things recreational <{><[>facilities <[>yeah yeah yeah yeah i've always been a great whatsaname laughs you know we all used to <,,><&>7 <&>next utterance addressed to child there you are katy <,> laughs a holy apple <{><[>laughs <[>laughs <&>20:00 voc right yeah so er you know er <,,> that's one of the <.>facil other facilities they've got um and i'm pleased about it i've always been one a great <,> great believer in um you know building one church and everybody uses it <{1><[1>you know that sort of thing instead of building one here one there one one one you <{2><[2>you you know what i mean <,> sort of like a community thing eh i mean you're ALL <,> er you know your religion i suppose or or you pray you you you sort of um all head towards <{3><[3>the common goal <[1>yeah <[2>oh i see what you mean yeah <[3>word yeah you know only we got different ways of going about it <{><[>you know um <,> but as i say some of these sort of these of course they er they build these things and er <[>yeah duplicate it YEAH and i don't think er although i can't say that about the island community <,> <{1><[1>you know they make use of their their <{2><[2>their churches <,> goodness gracious me <{3><[3>um <[1>yeah <[2>yeah <[3>good one down there eh yeah <,> oh yeah <,,> yeah so apart from that you know voc i've i've never had any problems <&>21:00 with with porirua a lot of people don't like um <,> a lot of people seem to think it's er <,> just cos we got a mental hospital here <,> that everybody here is mad laughs <{><[>laughs <[>you know i i remember when i was young when i was younger you know <,> er where i come from you know oh porirua oh no you don't go down there yeah all the people there are porangi word <{1><[1>you know and that's what they used to say even the OLD people see <,> so you couldn't blame the <{2><[2>the kids i mean all all all all all mad down there <,> so whenever the wicked porirua was mentioned <{3><[3>laughs you know and i think that stigma still sticks today in <{4><[4>the to a real lot of people you know <,> which is a shame really because um clears throat tut i think it's what you make it wherever you live or i <{5><[5>don't know wherever you live <[1>laughs <[2>yeah yeah <[3>laughs <[4>yeah yeah <[5>yeah yeah you know word <{><[>word <[>it'd be the same wherever you go yeah yeah you know i quite happy here i <&>22:00 inhales er <,> do your thing do your work and er <,,> work hard for what you get you know yeah and i think you get a lot of satisfaction out of <,> er working for things you know instead of <,> being given to you you know <,> like i notice the difference now doing the milk run eh you <.>s i see a lot of young couples come in <,> into houses <,> new houses eh <,> you want to see the stuff coming off the trucks man <,> <&>sucks in breath you know they've got everything eh <,> <.>an and they're only young you know might be early twenties and the girl or wife might only be <.>eigh <.>eigh nineteen or you know round about that age but they got everything <,> er wouldn't be when i were married we were sitting on apple <{1><[1>cases <,> yeah you <{2><[2>know you know what i mean the sort of the whole thing has changed <{3><[3>eh so um <,> tut <,> behave yourself yeah <,> so you <{4><[4>know <,> <.>s er different things it's <,,> old ideas and new ideas and <&>23:00 <,,> you know <,,> so i've got no whatsaname against porirua i'm pleased with it you know i'm quite happy here you know <,> my wife's happy so <,,> and we've brought up five children here <{5><[5>you know so er <,,> er <,> i can't say i'm <,> satisfied with all my children you know um because i think most parents um <,> like their children to you know to do well i think that's that's the aim of of all parents i suppose and er you know some of the things they do <,> er sort of saddens you a bit at times but um overall we're lucky <{6><[6>you know they haven't got into any um <[1>laughs <[2>laughs <[3>yeah <[4>yeah <[5>mm <[6>mm yeah real strife they haven't gone around <,> beating people up or you know doing HARM to other people <,> most of the harm and the silly things that are done is is er to themselves really yeah and er <,> you know <,> mum's always going on about <&>24:00 them you know oh should do this cos they're all here you know and <,> and they're watching t v most of the time you know and videos and i said well at least we know where they are laughs <{><[>laughs yeah yeah <[>you know word control you know at least we know <,> so <,> overall no i'm very happy with porirua <,> you know <{1><[1>i'm pleased with porirua and i think what makes er it a lot better too is i've got a lot of family here <{2><[2>you know that have come from gisborne you know nephews and <[1>mm <[2>yeah yeah and jan's family well you know what jan's family is like <{><[>very close you know <[>mm yeah so er <,> um really we don't need any outsiders you <{1><[1>know there's enough word and and the age groups are such <,> that you know there's always er you're not on your own you know like <,> teenagers we've plenty of teenagers plenty of kids you know little younger ones so they're all sort of mixed round you know get on <{2><[2>well with one another really <[1>laughs <[2>yeah that's right all at the same <{><[>age word <[>yeah so you know that's when the old <,> the old family extended family comes in yeah and <&>25:00 that's what it is word you know you know <,> and there's a hell of a lot of families you can't say that about you know <,> <{><[>about them you know <,> i mean er <,> as i say most functions that we go to is all mostly family you know <[>mm yeah the odd time you go out for other things but overall it's you know <,> so er well no i'm more than happy <,> and er as i say all my family you know my immediate family's here i've got no desire to go back to gisborne <,> <{><[>you know um <,> because of that fact you know because i've got everything i've got a brother there you know and his family but er you know we see one another but <[>yeah mm my um <,> my whatsaname's are here <,> you know and i hope that all my children will settle here some you know within word <{><[>word <[>yeah yeah around this area you know so er <,> but er yeah i've always had a good relationship with them you know <,> i've never <&>26:00 <,,><&>4 you know <,> whatsanamed them or <,> anything that's going on i've always told them <,> you know mm i've even fired the bad bullets you know not only the good ones <{><[>word and er <,> and that's er you know <,,> and so my relationship with them really you know <,> on the whole is pretty good you know <[>laughs yeah so er have you seen um what was the area like when you first came here clears throat well crumbs yeah heck <,> inhales well er laughs yeah it was vastly different to what it is now yeah um <,> tut crumbs yeah <,> oh hell it was laughs it's very hard to <{1><[1>sort of envisage you know how it was it it certainly wasn't like this you know <,> er well it was totally different <,> yeah it's amazing how you forget you know unless you consult photographs <{2><[2>you know you go oh yeah that's a good one you know <&>27:00 <[1>laughs <[2>yeah yeah um <,> you know my brother um my oldest brother he he was <.>s er he worked up this area you know and they bulldozed a lot of the orchards and everything <{1><[1>you know oh yeah there WAS there was orchards farms <{2><[2>you know yeah <,> up here all up here all around <,> and john says man they had some lovely orchards up here you know <,> but old bulldozers <&>makes crunching noise <{3><[3>put them all down <[1><.>shee was there orchards up here <[2>oh okay <[3>yeah put up all these little boxes yeah yeah <{><[>yeah yeah well they reckon that's you know progress i suppose i don't know <,> clears throat <,,> so <[>yeah yeah <,> yes it was vastly different to what it is now royie <{><[>laughs yeah <[>laughs <,,> oh oh have you um <,,> ever had any um <,> close shaves with death close shaves with death yes oh yes i <&>28:00 have <.>we well i suppose you i've had accidents yeah yeah but er i suppose it could have resulted in death yes i you know i went through a shop window oh right <{><[>oh <[>see you know i was i was dubbing my young nephew and he put his foot in the in the in the in the <.>ped in the spokes <,> right when we went through <{><[>a plate glass window word main street of gisborne <,> you know yeah <[>shit oh was that down there yeah yeah <{><[>mind you i was only about nine at that time <[>word yeah you know and then er what was it <{><[>then i i had a accident motorbike accident <,> er i was a pillion passenger with a cobber of mine and i was in hospital for seven months <[>word <.>sh <{1><[1><.>se seven months yeah word i was in traction eh see here to here <{2><[2>there's a steel pin through there <[1>laughs word <[2>yeah shivers you know <{1><[1>and this is what they call a femur bone <{2><[2>that one there that's the longest bone in your body and and the that one <&>29:00 broke <,> and er i was in traction <{3><[3>as i say yeah bloody seven months i was there tut but <{4><[4>then i chopped my fingers off <[1>yeah <[2>yeah <[3>ow <[4>is it all right oh so i've had three goes <{><[>laughs yeah but you know i don't know whether you think you really come close to death but <[>laughs shit yeah what happened in your old motorbike one well as i say we both went away on motorbikes <,> up to stratford yeah and mine blew up <,> and of course i came back with him and i was on the back you see and we came as far got as far as paekak <,> and we hit a parked car <&>makes smashing noises oh he spent the night <,> overnight in hospital <,> and i went out to it of course when i woke up i was in hospital you know yes and um <,> next thing i know it's oh heck what the hell is this bloody leg up in the air and the weights hanging over the <{><[>other end seven months in but i didn't realise till six months had gone that the pin was actually through to the bone <,,> yeah all i could see you know was all bandaged up and oh yeah the weights and you know <[>oh yeah <&>30:00 but then the nurse came round and <.>cl you know the doctor wanted to have a look at it and i LOOKED at it and i said is that <.>ge he said well that's <,> you know that's through <,,> <{><[>laughs oh god i said god god it looked like a like a six inch nail <[>laughs yeah? you know stainless steel thing and i said is that through to the bone? yeah it's through the and that's just um was that just to join it together <{><[>back together? <[>eh yeah yeah well the bone see when it broke it was like that eh <{1><[1>showed me the xrays <,> and of course the weights pulled it out you know till the bones <{2><[2>sort of and then they knit <.>a along there you see <{3><[3>and you get them in and they put these weights on <,> these <{4><[4>lead weights <[1>yeah <[2>oh yeah <[3>yeah <[4>oh is that what it and <{><[>it was holding on to that wire <[>yeah yeah yeah yeah that's right oh it was <.>thr <{1><[1><.>thr through to the bone but i didn't realise this till i'd i'd been in <{2><[2>there about six months and of course then i was oh i was thinking word you know how the hell they going to get it out? <,> <{3><[3>laughs jeez i can't walk around with that voc <&>31:00 <[1>phew <[2>laughs <[3>laughs laughs well i hope it's not word <{><[>laughs <[>yeah yeah that's right yes <,> <{><[>so er well you know those so i've had accidents but were those being close to death i suppose i could have been killed yes <[>word yeah yeah but as i say i don't <,> <.>w just as well fortunately they don't <,> you you you sort of can't you know they happen so quick <,> see i i just <,> i didn't even feel anything you know <,> <{1><[1>unconscious yeah that's it i i i you know woke up <,,> where the hell am i well happened about seven oclock at night <,,> and i <.>wo well i you know became conscious of everything again at about half past eleven at night <,> see? and <{2><[2>they were wheeling me round like a laughs wheeled me into the ward voc <,> cor blimey <,> so i could have been dead i wouldn't have known <{3><[3>laughs <,> yeah <[1>just that's it? <[2><.>sh <[3>laughs oh so um <,> i've knocked myself round a wee bit but yeah any how <&>31:57
