and broke a arm <{><[>and the <.>a and the arm wasn't fixed up properly <[>oh aue that's no <{><[>good yeah <[>so <.>they so he was turned down from that <{><[>see <[>laughs so you didn't <{1><[1><.>w marry one of the <.>re the returning <{2><[2>fellas <[1>because the <[2>no <.>they they really <{1><[1>thought i'd marry one of the returned <{2><[2>they said good gracious me <{3><[3>don't marry one that's laughs <[1>laughs <[2>yeah <[3>laughs what a dag i <{><[>suppose you felt like a change maybe <[><&>sighs <&>sighs <{><[>my yeah or something <[>laughs laughs my <{><[>word <[>and oh goodness <{><[>and was your husband he was so he was a new zealander <[>mm he was a new <.>zeal he was from er kawhia tut <,,> so oh <{><[>yeah ngati raukawa? <[>you know kawhia and they came into hamilton from kawhia you see because out there there's nothing much for them to look to <.>to for <{1><[1>work every day and most of them voc most of them <.>g go to to kuiti <{2><[2>te kuiti you see came out somewhere out from feilding way halcombe oh yeah halcombe <{><[>yes <[>yeah oh is she from there? and er i <.>don voc i should say she would be because her husband was one of the te huhus um and er and they come from further up this way you <{1><[1>know the <.>t te huhu <{2><[2>family i think i word hear that name very <.>w very <,> well spoken <{3><[3>of from somewhere um along shannon and up the otaki way <[1>yeah <[2>mm yeah <[3>yeah right yes <&>11:00 the te huhus yeah i know she always used to talk about the scotts <{><[>because <.>the voc you know granny thomson here one of the mahunas you know she was a scott and the and the wife the first wife was her older sister and and er she died they had the first family voc married a <,> voc i've forgotten te kanawa i think mahuna and um then er voc she was the second wife and got the second family <[>yeah right of er the mahuna family here <{><[>that's <.>they're they're the they were the starting of the <.>m mahuna family here <[>oh mm and their name is well well er <{><[>known here in this area <[>mm yes mm <{><[>yeah there's a lot of mahunas around <[>tut and er and course everything they used to say oh those mahunas she said don't you down that name mahuna i always heard her say that <{1><[1>inhales she said er if it <.>ca if <&>12:00 anything wrong there that they see you come from she said i blame it for granny <{2><[2>thomson you see the scotts <[1>mm <[2>yeah laughs she said because i know that that's part of my family and i know that family well right from otaki down to shannon <{><[>she used to say that <[>gosh yeah yeah that to me and er i used to say oh is <{><[>that it yes they always talk of <.>mahu know mahuna <.>t and i used to tell them now this day i said mahuna what i could remember she used to say he's a gentleman <[>laughs yeah laughs she says oh mahuna <.>n never downs anybody yeah you never hear him talk about anybody yeah he'll be calm and just go on with them <{><[>you know <[>mm mm yeah it's his the it's the opposite to his half brother hemiatu well that's the part of my dad's <{1><[1>family that come from the hemiatu <{2><[2>family <[1>right <[2>oh right well i was just about to say where was your where was your father born? <&>13:00 my father was born voc down er temuka way or somewhere out of nelson there somewhere down there oh yes <{><[>is he from he is <[>tut and er and that's where his mother is from from ngai tahu from that family <{><[>yes and um and yet they're part of up here the hemiatu family because <[>oh gosh oh okay their er hemiatu married voc their grandmother from up <,> voc from up this way right oh that's interesting so <{1><[1>that er <,> <{2><[2>yes <[1>yeah <[2>right so oh that's right <{><[>um <[>so that <{><[>that's my background here <[>do <.>you oh <{><[>right word <[>and er and yet they're they're part of here like you know of er <,> of the marriage through the marriage i think it is because er er <.>he hemiatu was a half brother to er <.>mahu <{><[>old mahuna <&>14:00 <[>right yeah and they were brought up together well hemiatu marries into that family right i think they're all the family of jean rowling you heard of the story <{1><[1>of jean rowling er saving that um ship that came from <,> or got er badly er um <,,> er broken up voc a <.>t it was through a storm somewhere out at the <.>h er part of the harbour of er of nelson somewhere there or somewhere down there motueka way <{2><[2>anyway to do with the the sea anyway at that <{3><[3>time and um tut and er she she was the one that helped <[1>mm i think so <[2>right <[3>oh right with <.>the swim in that current out to it so they can have a rope and have a oh <{><[>goodness <[>a pull drag from there so <{><[>it's quite a history <[>mm <&>15:00 yeah that part of the <{1><[1>family had and they called her jean rowling ever <{2><[2>since <,> you see i think after they had a jean rowling like that somewhere in ireland i think or somewhere <[1>family <[2>right mm i think that history went <{><[>once again and it it was through that you know um something to do with saving of a ship <[>word mm well they saved everybody from it <{><[>you know that was on it i think they lost one <[>right goodness they didn't know he was <,> you know that he <{><[>didn't come on the rope <[>oh right yeah goodness they thought it was finished <{><[>so er that's how i got there and with len here it's funny how we get it all through marriage <[>gosh mm tut um <,> len um <,,> now what would she be to me his mother's my first cousin and HER mother is a a sister to my dad <&>16:00 oh goodness yeah <{><[>yeah <[>yes you can <{><[>see catching them both ways <[>from both ways yeah catching them <.>bo both ways <{1><[1>right oh gosh that's how it was a lot in eh in the old <.>d you know <{2><[2>older times and less you didn't go so far to look for your <[1>yeah <[2>mm er <.>th er as that's where you come ah <.>the the way how the <.>s the settlement worked from er from the time i was there onwards it's the intermarrying of <{><[>the families <[>right mm and we just come into the family family here of ngati toa just through like laughs how er we came through marriages <{><[>like that <[>right yeah <{><[>mm <[>and how word we made ngati toa up that's how that part of that um <,> south island d'urville island where all of the pilkingtons and <{1><[1>everything come from that's how they all got they're practically the one <{2><[2>lot <[1>mm <[2>right yeah all through <{><[>intermarriage <[>mm <&>17:00 they broke away yeah pilkingtons <{><[>yeah <[>mm <[>they're the same <{><[>they're all the same <[>yeah yeah <{><[>laughs <[>there were word something like that <{><[>laughs <[>they they came up here during the war years i wasn't here then <,> and they came out she'll lead you astray laughs i'll be right during the war <{><[>years but er you know er that's how the <[>word yeah they all came together i think really <{><[>is through the families <.>coming coming up here and marrying again into <[>yeah yeah yeah into the oh goodness into the um <{1><[1>relations here <{2><[2>so they're all one they talk about one another <{3><[3>as if as if they'd <,> they've got distant relatives but when you come down to look back <[1>yeah <[2>tut <[3>mm close good gracious they've been marrying into the back and forwards into the families they're close yeah yeah all those years mm tut so <.>y <.>d you identify as being maori eh yes maori <{1><[1>not you're pakeha or <{2><[2>anything else in particular <&>18:00 <[1>yes <[2>er well my GRANDdad <,> <.>he voc the karake we used to be the karake family oh yes but there ARE karake families and they're the rightful owners of the name tut er voc karake where we get that from and i only knew when i <.>g went into the forces i met one girl there that her mother says ask her if she's the relation to the reverend karake right and i thought to myself don't think my grandfather was a reverend i can't remember that part of <{1><[1>the business tut and it wasn't that i got back not back from overseas but when i got to see <.>my this er well we always call her granny or whatever it is kuia er this missus hemiatu the one <{2><[2>that <[1>mm <[2>oh yeah that married got there and ask her because she brought <&>pronounced as bought my grandfather up and i said when you had it where the karake name came in <&>19:00 yeah you <{><[>see <[>cos it is a big name around here <{><[>karake eh ngati toa <[>yes oh it's a big family and so <.>an and i said to to her because um and she says <,> well voc or you heard of the reverend karake did he come down this way because this family said he took over their home in marton they moved out of there and came to er lower hutt mm and er and <.>s said we were just wondering whether you're a relative of theirs right yeah you see and i thought oh i says i don't know i think i must have borrowed his name or something's gone wrong i didn't like to turn round and say oh i don't <{><[>think so you know anything <[>mm tut mind you it <{><[>is funny when you look back <[>and <.>so yes cos um <,> dad's i know we've got a relations relations on on my ngati porou side that are amohuras <{1><[1>and there was a guy called amohura in my class and i says hey i think we must be related and he said no he said my grandfather wanted to get into the war and he was too young and so he <.>s <{2><[2>stole the name of his mate laughs his mate was <.>y old enough and so he called himself amohura and kept the name <[1>oh yes? <&>20:00 <[2><.>he he stole the name laughs voc yeah it was the same as my grandfather the abel name abel isn't a he <.>ko you know he ingoa mai rano <{1><[1>it's just but he <.>thought he thought voc what's a name i can use and he'd been reading a bible i think and so he thought oh abel that'll do and he put <{2><[2><.>his himself in a false name just to get into the army early <[1>ae <[2>voc yeah i see oh tut well that's <{><[>how the voc <[>you get a lot of that eh <{1><[1>we had one in our family <{2><[2>word <[1>and voc <[2>and when i asked my <.>gra grandma she says i know <.>th him he came through here he's a <.>l oh he's a wonderful he was our FAVOURITE through here mm the reverend karake <{><[>i know she says and i i took it from that then it was him being a favourite they gave him that as a second name <[>word right they always called him wi or wiremu mm and er er and <{1><[1>course <.>i <.>w had karake the second name and the the other slide off <{2><[2>because we have english blood in er us but they all knew who the father was <{3><[3>down there and they said he came down here while he was captain hanson he arrived here and he was sent up to bell block <,> <[1>word <&>21:00 <[2>mm <[3>yeah oh yes out in new plymouth he <.>stay he built there and then he ended up captain hanson in the wars down at at um nelson way tut oh <{><[>yeah <[>and they <.>way met her and he's already a married man he came out with a family oh had a <{><[><.>f <[>so? had a family of <{><[>about six <[>that's who came to be your <{><[>grandfather <[>so yeah and he came to be our grandfather you see he was <{1><[1>taken over by granny ngawhiti <{2><[2>we used to call her <[1>mm <[2>right mm <{><[>oh goodness <[><.>to so you just see there yeah yeah she'll tell you the her family's secrets and so so that's it and i always say to len you know ask <.>l len i said from then on i met lot of karakes in the army and they always used to <&>22:00 say oh we're kind of relations i says yes i said we borrowed it <{><[>laughs i says we borrowed it oh we did and they laughed they always word took it <[>laughs yeah <{><[>word <[>you know that i'm <.>tal er making a fun of it laughs they <.>g they never ever thought any other way yes they <{><[>do <[>so so that's how that name karake <.>come he should have been <.>w er wi er karake hanson you <{1><[1>see wonder they didn't <{2><[2>take name <.>han and yet i met one of his family the hanson family <[1>right <[2>right oh yeah mhm when i went up to manaia one time in my trips and she was a dear little lady just a little little tiny soul typical english you know and petite little thing mm laughs and er and she knows she recognised one of my dad's brother up there that er lived in manaia and <.>b had his home which <{1><[1>manaia is that the manaia in taranaki or <{2><[2>the one up in oh <[1>made his home there <&>23:00 <[2>yeah no <{><[>manaia <[>the one in taranaki just er out of hawera right yeah cause there's another manaia up in coromandel <{><[>oh <[>and know that one? yeah cos my in <{><[>laws are from up that way <[>yeah i see yeah SO oh that's the history so i've <{1><[1>told the history of that <{2><[2>word <[1>yeah oh lovely <[2>um your husband was maori <{><[>was he <[>yeah he was maori maori yep yes <{1><[1>maori and it's a it's a it's a history to HIS pedigree too er he's a he has a JEW <{2><[2>came into that family er and they didn't like the jew name <[1>and <[2>oh yes oh they started off with the jew name abraham <,> <{><[><.>a <[>yeah my grandfather took ON a jew name i don't know why laughs abel <{><[>laughs yeah <[>voc yeah well he took over abraham and <.>s one of the grandsons today went back and took that name but he he made it er <{><[>abram to make it voc sound a bit better i said are you trying to be the lord with abraham and he said your name be no more abram may it be abraham <[>abram oh right <&>24:00 laughs there you are is is eparama is that a maori <,> you know transliteration of abraham i've always wondered <.>wonder eparama cos that's a common maori <{><[>name eh aperahama oh right yeah <[><.>e aperahama aha aperahama you see <{><[>so <[>oh <&>24:20
