<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side two <&>11:40 um do you like living in porirua yeah mhm what what things about it are good well it's where you're known laughs like any place you be born there you're known more <{1><[1>than somewhere else <{2><[2>it's just a feeling yeah yeah yeah <[1>right <[2>it's just familiar like people know you and that <&>12:00 oh yeah um mm <,> do you think they've got are there any particular <.>char changes you'd like to see <.>t made to the area um <,> facilities or <,,> um i don't really sort of no not not off <.>ha <.>th there ARE but i'd have to think a bit laughs um i don't really think about it you know it's i just <,,> no not really <{><[>no <[>what actually did you say you were weight training at <{><[>word <[>yeah yeah i do i do it at home at my dad's house oh i see <{><[>has he got weights there <[>down the pa yeah he's got weights shit that's all right <.>sh you miss out on some things though but basics and <{><[>that <[>yeah i was at the gym but they <.>cl when <{1><[1>since they yeah since they closed that down i used to do jazzergetics and that but i'm sort of i went to weights cos i used to do it while my brother was doing it <{2><[2>he used to sort of influence <{3><[3>me and so now it's sort of <[1>ultimate <[2>right <[3>yeah oh choice <{1><[1>so you got quite really into it and <{2><[2>doing word everything and <[1>yeah <[2>yeah oh for the last three months i've been yeah getting into everything and yeah <{1><[1>and what things do you do like your whole body <.>s <{2><[2>everything chest back legs thighs and stuff you do the whole lot <[1>yeah <&>13:00 <[2>er voc yeah yeah yeah i do everything but it's hard when you're doing leg curls and and extensions cos you haven't got the <{><[>equipment and all i do is squats and calf raises and <[>oh right yeah <{><[>yeah <[>i miss it sometimes <{1><[1>eh i really think oh i'm missing out on <{2><[2>something and <.>y yeah you do yeah yeah but i play i play netball and and all the sports softball netball and surf i surf and so <[1>yeah <[2>yeah cos you get your hamstring and that in the extension and word yeah so where <{><[>do you go to surf round here <[>i sort of titai bay titahi bay and um tut town i won't <{><[>never go over the coast that's where all the rocks are and laughs bugger that laughs <[>shit yeah but yeah oh so shit that's all right <{1><[1>and um actually are <.>they are they trying to get another one i hear there's a bit of trouble like <.>th someone's storing word weights but they won't let them be used or something and <{2><[2>someone else is <[1>mm <[2>oh is that kodak yeah it's something but <{1><[1>apparently someone else wants to set up but the people who own the weights won't don't doesn't <{2><[2>want to give them up <[1><.>s <[2>tut yeah and meanwhile we're <{><[>sort of suffering laughs <[>we're the ones suffering <&>14:00 how come your father's got a set up did he <{1><[1><.>use has he always been <{2><[2>into a bit of weight training <[1>um <[2><.>well i i think so yeah and and he was always into mm this oh that's right it must have been when my brother first started and so he went out and oh right he bought some and then then sam and all his mates oh they're skinny as and now they're just voc and one go to the ultimate goes to town as well and <{1><[1>mm yeah they're all big and yeah worthwhile worthwhile <{2><[2>for a couple of them yeah <[1>right into it <[2>yeah yeah that's right with a few and again you actually <.>get you can make a lot out of nothing yeah cos back in levin the gym closed and so a few that were really into it oh yeah they bought a few of the things and then they made other things like they <{1><[1>made a little they made a bench cos i think one was an engineer and one was a <.>pl oh one was an electrician so they actually <{2><[2>they got this shed and <{3><[3>they word it and they put the lights in and as i say one was an <.>en an engineer he's got all the welding stuff so he's built a bloody good bench press it's just <{4><[4>perfect thing and really good incline and and <{5><[5><.>s you know the all the benches and that really good stuff and <{6><[6>they gradually buy a bit of equipment they've been winning won a few prizes and you know getting the odd <{7><[7><.>f five hundred dollars prize so they go off and put money down on a calf raiser or something <[1>yeah <[2>yeah yeah <[3>it's not hard eh you just <[4>yeah? <[5>yeah? <&>15:00 <[6>mm <[7>yeah yeah i remember sam they all made their own equipment sort of put a chain over one of the wood pieces so they could do <{1><[1>that or do that <{2><[2>or something <{3><[3>and it was quite <[1>yeah <[2>yeah <[3>i know some of the things they've got <{1><[1>back in levin they're grouse looks like they had <.>s like a ten speed i don't know what they were using it for but they had a <.>s like a ten speed bicycle thing <{2><[2>word and it was on a hook ready to hook up onto the but what the hell they're gonna do with it i'm not sure <[1>yeah <[2>yeah laughs laughs <{><[>oh yeah um <.>s oh yeah so you <.>st and you play softball and netball and all that? <[>mm yeah yeah that's <{1><[1>where i get my cardio workout <{2><[2>laughs <[1>great <[2>yeah you would too <{><[>how are you going are you doing <[>mm oh good yeah yeah it's choice is netball's winter softball's summer? yeah <{><[>yeah <[>oh i see mhm last game of netball <.>th this week coming how are you going are you <.>g are <.>you oh we <.>s we've sort of um i'd say we're third second equal we're second equal at the <{><[>moment <[>oh that's all right yeah it's senior reserve yeah <&>16:00 and are most of the people in the netball team seems to me a lot of people who play netball also play softball eh <{1><[1>do you get quite a lot of <{2><[2>you in the same teams? <[1>mm <[2>um i've noticed no no which <.>w oh sort of they all do play netball but they i play for toa and then they go to tainui which is their <{1><[1>canoe and and sort of <{2><[2>i never knew about it <.>s and my <.>fr tracy she um tut she plays for <.>pe porirua viard united and i just went with her cos i haven't played since school <{3><[3>so i thought i'd do something with my winter <{4><[4>i'm glad i did though <[1>right <[2>oh <[3>yeah oh <[4>yeah yeah it's just that step you make to do it <{><[>yeah and it was really good <[>yeah oh good yeah actually one of my mates word oh every winter and she hadn't oh really wish i had cos she's struggling to keep the weight off you know laughs and she says oh i shouldn't've given up netball cos voc you know just automatically she'd sort of have you know a couple of practices a week and a game <{1><[1>and so she wouldn't even think about it <{2><[2>whereas now she word along the gym and <{3><[3>she's really grudingly <{4><[4>she doesn't even like it um do you think there's enough jobs for people locally <[1>yeah <[2>yeah <[3>yeah <[4>laughs oh no nah well not <.>f yeah there might be but <&>17:00 you've got to have the qualifications sort of right and not many people have <{1><[1>but there's a lot of people training though <{2><[2>that that that tech is really good eh <[1>yeah so they're <[2>yeah yeah <{1><[1>so there aren't just i mean for jobs for what people have got have got to offer there aren't many jobs available for <{2><[2>what they've got to offer <[1>mm <[2>no no i don't <{><[>think so <[>yeah <,> yeah do you think that's do you think they should be doing more <.>about oh you reckon the polytech's actually doing a good job then like that? yeah for trainingwise yeah yeah everyone's and they've got that music course cos i'm right into sort of um lifting up the music side of <{1><[1>things i think so many people on the dole they're i just know so many musos around here they're on the dole if if if they were given something some inspiration <{2><[2>sort of hall or something <.>th <.>a sort of a sound sound rooms <{3><[3>or something yeah <[1>right <[2>yeah <[3>soundshell yeah it you <{><[>know it just <[>it's just an interest eh basically just to keep people it is yeah <{><[>and what you like you'd like to build it up yeah <[>keep people's minds occupied yeah yeah so have you been involved at all in <&>18:00 their music <{1><[1>thing there like <{2><[2>word <[1>um <[2>oh oh i go and listen but they're sort of <.>i it it's different from the musos i know it's <{><[>sort of they're all <[>yeah it's structured <{><[>and word <[>they're all actually actually a lot of them are polynesian a lot of them and it's it's quite strange cos all the musos i know are maori <{1><[1>and and <{2><[2>yeah it's <[1>yeah <[2>they're islanders yeah so actually that guy out of holiday makers was at <{><[>tech there eh? <[>yeah yeah albert yeah is he still there? yeah he's still there he's a really good dude yeah yeah he seems good what are they doing now anyway <{><[>i i was thinking <[>tut i don't know i <.>don't oh they actually they've played eh yeah they still play i think they are i <.>s think i saw <{1><[1>they you know word yeah <{2><[2>they should have bloody <.>cr they should have really um cashed in on when they were in the limelight eh <{3><[3>i thought they'd try and <[1>they're quiet though eh? <[2>mm <[3>yeah they should have had two numbers and <{1><[1>and and kept one <.>d <{2><[2>low and brought that one out and then out with another one <[1>yeah <[2>mm yeah cos i heard the actual concerts are boring yet they should have given it <{1><[1>heaps they should have did they bring out an album don't think so <{2><[2>did they no like they should have really hit it <{3><[3>and tried <[1>their songs good <[2>i don't know <[3>i thought it <&>19:00 was a good song eh <{><[>i really liked it yeah <[>yeah it was good i thought they had a lot of and actually <.>th i thought they looked quite good on t v <{><[>while they did that song <[>yeah yeah they weren't shy yeah it was good they actually looked like they would have done quite well <{1><[1>in other places you know cos they looked quite clean cut and respectable and all that sort of shit so um yeah it's a pity they didn't i still reckon it's a pity ardijah oh they're still back together too <{2><[2>but they've lost a bit <{3><[3>word <[1>coughs yeah yeah <[2>yeah <[3>they yeah they sort of lose their <{><[>lead guitarist and <[>they are word they were choice though i reckon when they were a group <{><[>they were hot <[>yeah yeah <{1><[1>she's just she can <{2><[2>sing shit yeah <[1>word <[2>impressive eh did you see the closing ceremony to the commonwealth games voc oh <{><[>yes yes <[>cos i didn't even know if it was and i thought why why do they have that dick head singing the key song you know that yeah and he's from overseas why he's from manfred man <{1><[1>or something that guy they should have got her <{2><[2>to to carry the whole thing <{3><[3>cos she was choice <[1>mm <[2>oh she's <[3>she just makes you tingle she's <{1><[1>just really <{2><[2>good yeah <[1>yeah <[2>really clear eh <{><[>crystal clear voice <[>mm yeah my brother and and his girlfriend lisa they're um tut they're up in auckland they're just THE one of the best musos around and mm <&>20:00 and it's money i mean she sings <.>re beautifully she does <.>sh actually <{><[>um <[>a lovely clear voice yeah yeah and and and my my my brother's girlfriend sings like her exactly like her but it's that you need to find the right contacts <{><[>and you need the money and <[>yeah yeah the centre of auckland's really <{1><[1>the place it's got a big enough population to support local <{2><[2>things like <{3><[3>local bands you know you've got enough <{4><[4>word <[1>oh it's <[2>yeah <[3>yeah <[4>but there's so many bands up there and they're <{1><[1>all so good but <.>i it's just you need the money to go a step <{2><[2>further though <[1>mm <[2>mm and you can't take the risk of just all going up there yeah yeah bit hard er um what other things was i going <.>to oh so like the recreational facilities you reckon what do you you think they're sort of okay or <{><[>or <[>tut oh not since that ultimate closed it was just raking in the money and so many people <{1><[1>were going down there <{2><[2>and <[1>yeah <[2>well it seemed to me to be good yeah yeah and everyone <.>w EVERYONE was going there you know mm and especially the people on the dole that <&>21:00 i know <{><[>they all tried to go down there and <[>yeah yeah i <{1><[1>knew a lot of people i knew of a lot of people who were going <{2><[2>and they were <[1>work out <[2>and <.>it and it matters eh about you know just their day <{1><[1>sort of makes them feel <{2><[2>good people sitting back on the dole with nothing <[1>yeah <[2>yeah yeah <{><[>at home <[>no yeah it's it bloody good actually that's what i like about gym too cos it just you need some sort of outlet even if you have got <{1><[1>a <.>j even if you have got a whole job you still need a something just to get <{2><[2>fit some of your <[1>you can be addicted it's an addiction <[2>yeah let loose let go <{><[>laughs <[>word i'd get <.>cra i'd go crazy if i didn't train every day and i reckon let alone tut yeah <{><[>laughs <[>laughs yeah probably about right um what else word so you reckon the people are sort of friendly around here yeah oh yeah <{><[>yeah <[>friendlier than the <.>re is that one <{><[>of the things that's good about it? <[>word yeah yeah yeah i like it do you think you know how you said you go to the local marae down here yeah well not you do but well i lived in the pa i <{><[>i mean i lived down takapuwahia <[>oh oh i see <.>y <.>i since when we we shifted when i was five down there right on ngati toa street and um tut i've just when me and my boyfriend bought <&>22:00 this house in about three years ago and so but we always had bay friends <{1><[1>and and it's good i've got a mixture of bay and pa <{2><[2>friends and <{3><[3>it's really good yeah <{4><[4>laughs yeah and the pa crew yeah laughs oh yes it's quite yeah cos all the pa friends are are maori and you come out here and it's really pakeha you know but <[1>yeah <[2>yeah <[3>laughs and pa <[4>word the bay clan word laughs i like that what a dag yeah it's pretty <.>p it's quite flash over the hill isn't it <{><[>i mean you know word this way and then word down the other side i didn't realise how you can sort of see it <[><.>y yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah laughs <&>22:32
