<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side two <&>1:19 i can tell you now that after twenty four ends of twenty <.>al twenty eight all we're playing the last we're playing for a place in the semi finals here comes the bowl now er by pat bonham's number two this is trevor clopley it's on its way looks to be quite a good way to bowl on the backhand this could be shot itself has it got the legs has it got the weight has it got the grass that's what we're asking and sure enough she slides in for shot that's shot no doubt about it it is clopley that has the shot and pat bonham has the lead it's twenty <.>all twenty eight all playing the last end and now it's the turn of bill kane and allan nimmo his <&>2:00 number three has the bowl he's playing the forehand away from the clubrooms towards the road quite a good crowd in here too just having a look at this action this is high tension stuff playing the last end twenty eight all whoever wins the end gets a place into the semi finals it's on its way the bowl from allan nimmo from burnside this leg <.>cu breaking into the head quite well has it got the rest no it just slides past it's definitely i think one shot one shot to pat bonham it is one shot i have a spotter out there right near the head and he's just put down his finger cos i said when you go out there pretend you're on the bill kane side and if you put your finger down it'll be one to pat bonham surely enough pat bonham has a shot twenty eight all playing for a place in the semi finals tut now making his way towards the mat is the number three for pat bonham it's gary francis so quite a burly character too bit like er bill bill um bill fiecken he's through to the semi finals now we <&>3:00 can see whether gary francis can play the the masterly bowl that can just catapult his side <,> further into the advantage they have shot pat bonham from kia toa and now gary francis is on the move he's waddling up the pitch well up the rink and now he's trying to <.>w urge his bowl towards the head has it got the weight i don't think it has and it hasn't quite got the grass and it just stops oh about er three feet but it's er jack level <,,> so what er we can hear just in our effects microphone is bill kane saying to his number three garth swale if you can drag the jack just slightly we'd have one could have two garth swale tall player he's got the tea cosy hat you know the one that's got no brim it just looks like a tea cosy what that does to keep the sun off his neck or face i don't know though i guess he looks nice in it here's garth swale he's on the prance the big man <,> does bill kane like it let's just wait and see peering over his shoulder's pat bonham it comes into the head it breaks now and it <&>4:00 just slides past that won't alter it still one to pat bonham tut now pat bonham just gives his number three gary francis just a little bit of advice now because he has the shot pat bonham has the shot i look across at the scoreboard and i see the amazing sight of being twenty eight all after twenty four ends remembering it was bill kane that led by twenty to eight that was after twelve ends <,> it's been a been a draMATic fightback from pat bonham gary francis trevor clopley and also gavin spence and they fought back so far to level up at twenty eight all and now the whole of the kia toa side is having a conference they've had the conference call on the head no charge to telecom and he's on his way back to the mat and that's gary francis number three he has one more bowl <,,> had quite a good christmas too he's on the mat now and he just er picks up his bowl just gives it a bit of a rub i wonder if <&>5:00 it's got the cracker jack on it or not might not have and now he's ready he's going to play the forehand he's got the peaked cap the jockey sort of cap <,> the traditional bowler's cap really short step out and very deliberate delivery he's played the forehand he's on the move up the rink so he obviously thinks it has a chance he's sort of helping it along trying to gear it up trying to get it into third rather than just second i think it's into third now they changed gear but i don't think it's got the weight and sure enough it ends up short short bowl but it could be in the track definitely one to pat bonham and now we have garth swale he's getting a bit of a conference call too and bill kane will be demanding the ultimate shot in bowls either the dead draw or the trail of the <.>w <.>j jack or the white <,> just a fraction definitely one to <.>po pat bonham i don't think it's er too much to draw might be a couple of feet to draw shot which isn't a HUGE <&>6:00 task i wouldn't think a player like olly duckworth of the old time when he was using his agates the woods he would have drawn it or even ian roach now he's not a bad bowler ian roach he might even get this one right <.>o but let's watch the man in action it's garth swale plays the forehand he's on the move too he's not too enthusiastic is bill kane enthusiastic no he's not is pat bonham <.>ensu thusiastic no he's not he gets hung up in the front and he does propel a bowl through obviously it must have been going reasonably close cos there was hands in the <.>h head and sort of squeezing the rag but i still think that pat bonham would have won pat bonham does have one and now the ultimate pressure in bowls surely there's two bowls left for each player two bowls for bill kane two bowls for pat bonham and they have the chance of changing the direction of this match and is it a direction into the semi final <&>7:00 tomorrow or is it a direction into the bar and drown the sorrows we'll find out shortly what a great game twenty eight all playing the last he picked up a four on the twenty fourth remembering on the twenty third end it was bill kane that led by twenty eight to twenty four superb bowls from the kia toa four meant they picked up a four and made it twenty eight all and now we watch the drama here at taieri and it's been a dramatic sixteen days well fifteen days one day to go and on the fifteenth day one of these great players is going to make an exit from the fours and a quick trip home and one is going to go through to the semi final so let's watch the lefthander and that's pat bonham from kia toa he's playing his forehand the lefthander quite a deliberate sort of stance deliberate delivery he's standing still on the on the mat he just walked off a couple of paces so i don't think he's absolutely THRILLED with the prospects but i think he might be going towards the back just to get a bit of protection if the jack comes back and it must <&>8:00 have been good enough because er number three for the kia toa side gary francis does clap his hands i can tell you now that er the alton four are through to the semi <.>fina the alton four are through to the semi final as bill kane makes his way towards the mat and let's have a look at that game jeff hawkin was the skip alistair hurley was the namesake and jeff hawkin is the winner jeff hawkin alistair hurley mike sutton and rex ainsley have beaten bruce ballinger of marewa so it's the jeff hawkin alton side that goes through now let's get back to the competition between now pat bonham and bill kane so here's bill kane's first bowl it's on its way he's got weight he's running towards the head it's a probing shot trying to probe out the shot bowl and he doesn't do anything at all and he's still one down the PRESSURE mounts on the player from invercargill bill kane big bill and now the pressure is on pat bonham he has the luxury of <&>9:00 knowing that he has the shot but what he does know is that bill kane has the last bowl bill kane could change the game with his last bowl and that's the quandary now that pat bonham finds himself in i was told when i walk up the rink like that with my hands in the pockets to take your hands out of your pockets son but he's walking up he can afford to cos he's got all the pressure and i've got none so i put my hand in one pocket so going up towards the head is pat bonham he has the hands in the pockets and he's just worried what he's going to do is he going to try and play a bit of protection in front of the jack that would make a little bit of sense cos he was in front of the jack would mean then it would make bill kane's job harder or will he go to the back just to protect i think he should perhaps be in the running so that at least then it gives bill kane the chance of getting hung up on the way through to the head just reviewing the score twenty eight all twenty eight all playing the last end whoever wins this end will get a berth into the semi finals tomorrow in the blue ribbon event of new zealand bowls the bank of <&>10:00 new zealand championship fours <,> lot of people here just watching this match i'm sure that er as i look across towards the area of entertainment most of them have given away the entertainment they're going to watch the entertainment on the greens and here's the turn now of pat bonham this could be his last bowl of the tournament if he plays it incorrectly or it could be a bowl which'll catapult his side through to the semi finals <,> takes a deep breath you'd need to too you can understand why peter ballis is involved in transcendental meditation because at a moment like this i think you need to relax just wipes a little bit of sweat from his hand the lefthander he's going to play on the backhand i think he's going to try and put this bowl just in the running so it'll give bill kane a further obstacle to winning the semi final er quarter final get into the semi final so here's pat bonham he's delivered his bowl on the backhand for him the lefthander just stutters up the rink a little bit stops he's on the move again stops again has another look at the bowl <&>11:00 remains like a statue as it just winds its way towards the head and gets in towards the running and i think it was a reasonable sort of bowl not too many applauses although i did see gary francis pat bonham's number three say yeah that was quite a good shot the ultimate pressure in bowls is now on bill kane can he deliver the bowl that will put the side of garth swale allan nimmo and mark cowan through to a semi final berth or is this bowl going to be doomed for the north end side the forehand it's on its way it's a probing shot probing in the white down on his haunches is pat bonham having a look as it as it probes towards the head has it got the result it has got the result he has the win what a fantastic bowl from bill kane he catapults the north <.>i end side the north end side into the semi final with the ultimate bowl on his final delivery and out goes pat bonham in goes bill kane to the semi final what a fabulous performance by <&>12:00 bill kane the big fella from north end he's in the semis and pat bonham is out of the competition <&>12:03
