<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side two <&>0:26 right <,> yes so we were unable to have unfortunately <,> our theatre sports day and so we did it yesterday um with the third <.>f with one of the third form classes and it went really well <,,> so them's the breaks you also had your careers visit on TUESDAY <,> did you <&>class agree you had missus atkins for your <{><[><,> teacher <,> okay <[><&>class agree and did you finish off those work sheets that we had started earlier <&>class members agree right did she go over them with you yep yeah good <,> now there's another one i want us to have a look <&>1:00 at today <,,> actually before we do i want you to um <,,><&>3 just tell me what you thought the highlights of this year's programme were <,> and perhaps what some of the lower points were we always try to ASSESS each year <,> what we've done and areas that we can um <,> change <,,> doesn't necessarily mean that we're always going to change <{><[>just because you <[><&>sound of someone zipping their bag moan about something and say that it was boring <,> it may have been boring or it may not have been <,> or it may be that it was difficult for you but we do like to try and introduce interesting material what were some highlights of the year's course in english for you <,,><&>7 interview writing? <,,> no highlights? <,,><&>4 total and utter bore it was <,,> oh dear what was the <&>2:00 low point raewyn <,,> word <,,><&>5 what didn't you like doing um frances <,,><&>5 oh everything everything? <&>class laughs nah <,> well we've done lots of interesting things let me see what have we done <,,> you've studied a NOVEL and you got broken up into groups <,> for the novel um modular groups did you enjoy that it was all right word what was good about it joseph um <,,><&>3 i don't know <,> no the year was all right laughs word broken up into different modules yeah laughs yeah <,> the talks okay so you mixed with <.>a a new group <.>of <,> <.>of kids true <&>yawns pupils <,> all right okay what about a new group of <&>3:00 teachers? oh oh yeah <,> it was okay I think <{><[><,> it's <.>just <[>i thought that <.>was a bit disappointing for some of you was it yeah <{><[>that's an understatement yeah laughs <[>word laughs <,,><&>4 what did you do frances word okay <,> what else did we do we did some short stories <,,> production <,> pity we didn't have time to actually write our own stories <.>and and do our book <,,><&>3 um yuri no that's what you did for your <,,> novel <,,><&>3 right next year you're going into the fifth form in this school and you must START thinking about it NOW <,> english is INTERNALLY ASSESSED and that means you must do all your work that's set in class and do all your work that is set as an assignment and you will have quite a few assignments to do throughout the year AND YOU MUST <&>4:00 hand them in and you must hand them in on time if you do not then you will not be getting a MARK or a very good mark at the end of the year because ALL those marks add up <,,> and THAT with your two school exams is <.>w how we come up with your school cert mark SOME SCHOOLS sit a big exam like you will do in SOME of your other subjects but in SCIENCE and ENGLISH at rotorua memorial high then you sit internal assessment <,,> now some of you i'm sure would do very well if you just sat one exam at the end of the year most of you in this class would not and you will need to <.>work <,> well would not do as well as you will do when you've <.>got when you work steadily throughout the year <,,><&>3 for most of you that's important but it also means that you cannot afford not to do your assignments as some of you <,> haven't done if you don't <.>get i mean you might not get ten out of ten every time you do your <&>5:00 assignment maybe you only got three out of ten and you're a bit disappointed but at least you got three marks and they all add up <,,> at the end <,,> and it's better to get forty percent in school cert than ten percent <,,> right? <,,> plus it helps you with your LEARNING and means you're working all year means you have <.>a are constantly thinking about whatever it is that you are learning and improving your language skills because that's what ENGLISH is <,> it's your LANGUAGE skills <,,><&>3 it's teaching you about your language that most of you speak it's teaching you about a language that is a lingua franca for the whole world what is a lingua franca <,,> here's a word or a phrase to add to your vocabulary <&>writes on board three seconds see <&>writes on board five seconds well basically it's another PHRASE <,> that means that's a language that's used by a lot of people <&>6:00 who speak different languages so that they can understand each other <,> and in europe you'll find that a lot of business people of course they're very close <.>to in the um geographical distance and they trade with each other they er <,> tut do a lot of things in their life with each other but they may not speak french or german or italian or whatever they will tend to speak english together most businesses in europe conduct their language in <,,> in ENGLISH <.>and and now it's becoming a world wide tongue that is used so <.>YOU <.>o are most of you <.>it's it's your first language so you're already <,,> it's all ready easier for you to learn this language that's a lingua franca in fact I think your english would improve if you also learnt another language <,> that's important who learns another language <,,><&>3 four of you <,> who has learnt at some time in their life another <&>7:00 language <,> it's a START it gives you some idea <,,> do you know that most people in the world for instance in places like new guinea where there's HUNDREDS of languages <,> that most people would speak three or four languages <,,><&>3 and think nothing of it <,,><&>3 helps to make you more aware of other people and more aware of the structure of your OWN language <,,> just think about that what we're going to do today when i find my work sheet <,,> here we are <,,> now i'm gonna hand out this work sheets and we're going to have a little look at them <,,> we'll look at some things on collective nouns you haven't had much time for this usually we try and do it with your writing so you see that we can understand HOW language works <,,><&>3 <&>gives out worksheets your one your one and don't write on them please <,,><&>10 now does anyone want to start on collective NOUNS what are <&>8:00 nouns aaron oh i don't know what are nouns aaron <,,><&>8 naming words right good eve give me an example of a noun rolling pin rolling pin all right then eve okay what kind of noun would we call that pronouns no pronouns are she it he <.>is er tut <,> she it <,> him her they stand in place of <.>a <{><[>naming word <[>noun right a personal noun <,,><&>3 word i haven't got a page one oh sorry <,,> word <,,> there you are anyone else <,> not got one <,,> okay collective nouns abstract nouns there's <&>9:00 different kinds of NOUNS <,,><&>3 it's important because this is a common mistake when you are writing and using a NOUN <,> and what often comes before a NOUN or what does come before a noun <,,><&>6 this is a noun <,> what's this frances word no word right tell me about the desk in the clause <.>what <.>what what do you want to say before you say desk <,,><&>8 THE desk or word an article right good an article so the definite or indefinite article a or the <,> or an <,,><&>4 right and there's that oh <&>10:00 right <,,><&>4 before a collective noun usually going to say a and when you going to get to your VERB <,,> it's going to be singular so you're not going to say a swarm <,> are flying over the trees a swarm of bees are flying over the trees what WOULD you say <,,><&>4 what would you say kate <,,><&>6 yep word word <,> a <.>sw well a SWARM of bees <,> are flying over the trees word what's incorrect past no see that the swarm is a collective noun it's because they're a whole lot of bees <,,> what's the bird's problem word <,,><&>7 word word <&>11:00 no er you could say the swarm because if you're saying a happening definite article means any swarm a swarm of bees you don't <.>know the swarm of bees you mean THAT PARTICULAR swarm of bees that usually probably nest in this little hive overhead <&>11:30 <&>thirty seconds not transcribed as teacher discusses a student's appointment <&>12:00 right a swarm of bees is flying over the trees collective nouns stand for a lot of things <,> but they seem to take singular verb let's have a look a <,> flight of aircraft flew over the <,> <{><[>army of soldiers <[>word <,,><&>3 what i want you to do is look at this first one on collective nouns collective nouns are the word used in a collection or group of similar persons animals or things e g herd army gang pack or tribe how many <,,> people would you find in a tribe tiffany <,,><&>6 word a what <,> a group word yeah we don't know do we it could <.>stand a fairly silly question <,> a lot of people but <&>13:00 definitely more than one <,,> same thing with a GANG it's not just A GANG normally you say a boy a girl a boy who's in a gang a girl who's in a gang but a gang has lots of people <,> a collective noun <,> what you're going to do is to just write down collective nouns and fill in those <,,> questions <{><[>number one <[>word <&>13:20 <&>one minute thirty four seconds of discussion between teacher and class on the fact that they did this exercise with the other teacher on another day not transcribed <&>14:54 all right you can <,> how do we structure sentences i just <&>15:00 want you to finish it off then word right just get on with that and i'll come round and check oh i left my notes word make sure if you haven't started that you start at the beginning and i'll come round and check all of your work <&>15:15 <&>the rest of the class is the teacher walking around and checking individual student's work
