      diane good evening

  <WSC#DGB050:0010:Z1>
      good evening

  <WSC#DGB050:0015:Z1>
      how are you tonight

  <WSC#DGB050:0020:HG>
      oh good thanks

  <WSC#DGB050:0025:Z1>
      that's good

  <WSC#DGB050:0030:Z1>
      hey i just was listening to the um chappie that was on before
      about um drivers <O>laughs</O> and it sort of i was a bit um
      concerned with how he thought

  <WSC#DGB050:0035:Z1>
      er he'd only been like down the south island for about a month
      travelling around

  <WSC#DGB050:0040:Z1>
      um my husband and i have sort of just moved back up to auckland
      and we've we grew up here you know ourselves so <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0045:HG>
      yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0050:Z1>
      we sort of know <O>laughs</O> that we actually lived in nelson
      for about a <drawls>year</drawls> and i can quite honestly
      <laughs>say</laughs> that the poor <laughs>nelsonians are
      probably the worst drivers</laughs> that we've ever come across
      um and we actually travel around a lot

  <WSC#DGB050:0055:Z1>
      we lived in northland and you know been all over the <&>5:00</&>
      country just about um through my husband's job so <O>laughs</O>
      we've seen a <laughs>few drivers in our time</laughs> but um <O>tut</O>
      we can say like auckland i mean they have their problems but
      mainly because <O>inhales</O> i think they rush around too much

  <WSC#DGB050:0060:Z1>
      they're always just too much in a rush <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0065:HG>
      mm

  <WSC#DGB050:0070:Z1>
      um but you know we we've just about had quite a few close calls

  <WSC#DGB050:0075:Z1>
      you know nelson we were driving along the road and <O>inhales</O>
      you know on the on the we were in the right sort of basically
      and <O>inhales</O> little old ladies or other people just pulled
      out in front

  <WSC#DGB050:0080:Z1>
      they saw us didn't even look

  <WSC#DGB050:0085:Z1>
      no indication no <laughs>anything</laughs>

  <WSC#DGB050:0090:Z1>
      they just pull out and you <O>inhales</O> sort of slam the
      brakes on and <O>inhales</O> you know and it's it's sort of
      quite <{1><[1><O>laughs</O> <laughs>it's um</laughs></[1> quite
      frustrating you know and then <.>y</.> you're going into a car
      park and you sort of thinking okay um should i what should i do
      should i just go really slowly or what and you get these cars
      sort of backing out just about into you and <O>inhales</O> it's
      just really amazing <O>laughs</O> <{2><[2>but</[2>

  <WSC#DGB050:0095:HG>
      <[1><O>laughs</O></[1></{1>

  <WSC#DGB050:0100:HG>
      <[2><.>i</.></[2></{2> it's extraordinary

  <WSC#DGB050:0105:HG>
      <.>m</.> my my wife was driving us <.>y</.> yesterday <.>a</.>
      as i said we <&>6:00</&> went up to warkworth <O>inhales</O> and
      on one of these hills where they say er use left lane unless <&>pronounced
      unleast</&> overtaking <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0110:Z1>
      yeah <{><[>yeah</[>

  <WSC#DGB050:0115:HG>
      <[>and there</[></{> was we'd been following for some time and
      we had a long queue behind us we'd been following a van full of
      people <O>inhales</O>

  <WSC#DGB050:0120:HG>
      it was driving very slowly in a hundred k area <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0125:Z1>
      <drawls>right</drawls> <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0130:HG>
      so when we got on to this hill you would think wouldn't you that
      that van would have gone to the <{><[>lefthand lane

  <WSC#DGB050:0135:HG>
      no</[> way

  <WSC#DGB050:0140:HG>
      they continued at a slow speed in the righthand lane

  <WSC#DGB050:0145:HG>
      now my wife said to me there's no way i'm going to overtake them
      on the inside <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0150:Z1>
      <[>yeah <?>yeah</?></[></{>

  <WSC#DGB050:0155:Z1>
      <drawls>no</drawls> <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0160:HG>
      which <.>a</.> which i wouldn't have either because you <?>don't</?>
      if if you started to and they decided oh gosh i should have gone
      to the lefthand lane and came across a you had a collision b
      you're in the wrong

  <WSC#DGB050:0165:Z1>
      oh <{><[>i know</[>

  <WSC#DGB050:0170:HG>
      <[>so</[></{> so in the end this lengthy queue of cars had to
      wait behind this van full of people <{1><[1>and</[1> and er i
      mean <{2><[2><?>oh <.>a</.></?> <.>y</.> you know</[2> yes

  <WSC#DGB050:0175:HG>
      i was i was wondering if <.>e</.> <.>e</.> <.>e</.> how much it
      would cost me to get one of those big guns and lean out the <{3><[3>window
      and go boom</[3> you know and

  <WSC#DGB050:0180:Z1>
      <[1><O>laughs</O></[1></{1>

  <WSC#DGB050:0185:Z1>
      <[2>it's frustrating</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DGB050:0190:Z1>
      <[3><O>laughs</O></[3></{3>

  <WSC#DGB050:0195:Z1>
      yeah no yeah but <.>there</.> people sort of i think <&>7:00</&>
      you know a lot of them need to <O>inhales</O> to go to like
      defensive driving or something or really learn properly what the
      road rules are and <O>inhales</O> you know and and be courteous

  <WSC#DGB050:0200:Z1>
      i think that er that's a one big problem i think

  <WSC#DGB050:0205:Z1>
      you know there's no courtesy any more <O>inhales</O>

  <WSC#DGB050:0210:Z1>
      i mean i'll tell you another thing about um we went up to
      whangarei cos we've been looking for houses and that but we
      finally settled out in waiuku here and <O>inhales</O> um we were
      coming back from down there and um there was this you know <,>
      sort of all through there's quite a lot of you know curves and
      things like that and um we've got three young children too so
      they <.>w</.> all there in the back you know and <O>inhales</O>
      driving along quite quite casually and then around the corner on
      the wrong side of the road came this um great big <O>voc</O> <.>ca</.>
      red car a lady driving talking on one of those um <O>tut</O>
      hand held phones

  <WSC#DGB050:0215:HG>
      yes

  <WSC#DGB050:0220:Z1>
      she um sort of just managed i don't know how but managed to
      swerve onto her side of the road <O>inhales</O> just in time
      basically cos we we could see ourselves having a head on
      collision <{><[>with her</[>

  <WSC#DGB050:0225:HG>
      <[>yes</[></{> yes

  <WSC#DGB050:0230:Z1>
      and i thought oh and that's another problem i think too <,> <{><[><unclear>word</unclear></[>
      <&>8:00</&>

  <WSC#DGB050:0235:HG>
      <[>how do you</[></{> <.>h</.> how do you stop people like her
      from doing silly things like that

  <WSC#DGB050:0240:HG>
      that's the question isn't it

  <WSC#DGB050:0245:Z1>
      er yeah there's a <.>lo</.> i think there's a lot needs to be
      done basically eh <{><[>um</[> to improve improve things

  <WSC#DGB050:0250:Z1>
      for once i <.>th</.> i think that they should ban actually um
      hand held phones and if they want to talk they should pull to
      the side of the road somewhere safe and talk then <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0255:HG>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DGB050:0260:HG>
      yes

  <WSC#DGB050:0265:Z1>
      and then when they're finished then they can you know carry on
      their way cos they they they lack concentration when they're
      talking like that

  <WSC#DGB050:0270:Z1>
      i mean it's just the same as if you're talking to somebody else
      sitting in a passenger's seat you're sort of um you know
      sometimes you might turn to look at them sort of thing and
      that's that's quite bad too in itself but i think you know <.>y</.>
      you've got to be really concentrating on what's happening on the
      road in front of you beside you and behind you all the time

  <WSC#DGB050:0275:HG>
      yes i i i you're right without a doubt

  <WSC#DGB050:0280:HG>
      it's just a matter of how you get that message through and with
      the best way <O>inhales</O> and <.>i</.> i tell you what <?><.>it</.></?>
      driving around here you take your life into your own hands

  <WSC#DGB050:0285:HG>
      thanks a lot diane

  <WSC#DGB050:0290:HG>
      nice to <&>9:00</&> hear from you <,>

  <WSC#DGB050:0295:HG>
      now now <with singsong voice>dum da dum dum</with singsong voice>

  <WSC#DGB050:0535:HG>
      all the young journalists used to be real characters and have a
      ton of fun and now they're all they're all serious and
      politically correct and and they can't spell for peanuts

  <WSC#DGB050:0540:Z2>

      <[2>i i i agree with i</[2></{2> agree with that but i'd add to
      it and say people driving home from church as well

  <WSC#DGB050:0770:HG>
      put them in with them <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0775:Z3>
      yeah <O>laughs</O> <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0780:HG>
      because <.>th</.> the i think they they really feel good cos
      they have been to church and they've and they feel they're
      righteous and all that and and they take risks <&>14:00</&> on
      the road

  <WSC#DGB050:0785:HG>
      they don't bother to indicate they don't bother to look they
      just drive out and so on and i think it's because they feel that
      somebody up there is <.>lov</.> loving them and looking after
      them

  <WSC#DGB050:0790:Z3>
      yeah something like that <O>laughs</O> yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0795:HG>
      <O>laughs</O> i'm sure it's true of nuns <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0800:Z3>
      yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0805:HG>
      but don't tell i hope my sister's not listening

  <WSC#DGB050:0810:HG>
      she'll she'll have words to say to geoffrey next time she sees
      him <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0815:Z3>
      <O>laughs</O> <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0820:HG>
      <.>sh</.>

  <WSC#DGB050:0825:Z3>
      she <?><.>g</.> she'll</?> she'll have to say a <.>v</.> to <.>all</.>
      to all truck drivers and bus drivers in the country then <O>laughs</O>
      <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0830:HG>
      <O>laughs</O> <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0835:Z3>
      yeah <?>mate</?> but every time we saw <?><.>a</.> where the</?>
      religious order driving we always made gave them a wide berth
      <{><[><O>laughs</O> yeah</[>

  <WSC#DGB050:0840:HG>
      <[><O>laughs</O></[></{> oh <.>i</.> i used to er i used to er
      <.>w</.> er <.>wh</.> when they started all these bumper
      stickers i used to go on air and i'd give the give the bumper
      sticker of the week for the whoever was the worst driver and you
      know it'd be les mills health studios or something like that and
      then they and then radio rhema started up and all these people
      with radio rhema on <&>15:00</&> their bumper <{><[>and they
      were</[> they were as bad as nuns although they were a different
      religion

  <WSC#DGB050:0845:Z3>
      <[><unclear>word</unclear></[></{>

  <WSC#DGB050:0850:Z3>
      <?>well</?> true but as you say they seem to believe in divine
      <{><[><O>laughs</O></[> protection or something and oh <laughs>god</laughs>
      <O>laughs</O> <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0855:HG>
      <[><O>laughs</O></[></{>

  <WSC#DGB050:0860:HG>
      it was oh was it not uncle tom who was it used to say god will
      take care of you but not over thirty miles an hour <{><[><O>laughs</O></[>

  <WSC#DGB050:0865:Z3>
      <[>yeah <O>laughs</O></[></{> yeah but anyhow i've i've i've
      driven in auckland and er they're they're quite courteous
      drivers over there

  <WSC#DGB050:0870:Z3>
      you're quicker than us i'll grant you that <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0875:HG>
      yeah <{1><[1>that</[1> that might be right <.>but</.> i i was in
      wellington because they had a lot of one way systems i always
      found <.>y</.> you know you're <.>n</.> you're out of the place
      and might not have driven there for a year but when you're there
      and you think oh ye gods i should have gone into that lane if
      you signal they'll always signal you to go across or or they'll
      say come on down this way or something like that

  <WSC#DGB050:0880:HG>
      <.>they're</.> i always found them very helpful whereas in
      auckland if you signal people yell out at you where do you think
      you're going you bald headed old bugger <{2><[2>and things</[2>
      like that dreadful

  <WSC#DGB050:0885:Z3>
      <[1>yeah</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DGB050:0890:Z3>
      <[2><O>laughs</O></[2></{2>

  <WSC#DGB050:0895:Z3>
      yeah or something like that or do you want a written bloody
      invitation or <latch> <&>16:00</&>

  <WSC#DGB050:0900:HG>
      yeah <with silly voice>where'd you get you bloody licence ha ha</with silly voice>

  <WSC#DGB050:0905:Z3>
      yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0910:HG>
      <.>b</.> but it's <drawls>er</drawls> i i i've always found that
      in auckland but very rarely do i i've never had it i've never
      been in <.>s</.> in that situation in wellington or christchurch
      so i or or dunedin for that matter

  <WSC#DGB050:0915:HG>
      i mean i must have just er but maybe we'll put wanganui down in
      <.>a</.> in in this group with auckland

  <WSC#DGB050:0920:HG>
      how's that

  <WSC#DGB050:0925:Z3>
      yeah fair enough <O>laughs</O> <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0930:HG>
      thanks a lot mate

  <WSC#DGB050:0935:Z3>
      right cheerie <&>16:22</&> <&>twenty one seconds of
      advertisements</&> <&>16:43</&>

  <WSC#DGB050:0940:HG>
      yeah john good evening

  <WSC#DGB050:0945:Z4>
      how's it going

  <WSC#DGB050:0950:HG>
      oh good thanks <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0955:Z4>
      i agree with you

  <WSC#DGB050:0960:Z4>
      i i don't i don't personally indicate cos er it's nobody else's
      business where i'm going

  <WSC#DGB050:0965:HG>
      <hysterically><O>laughs</O></hysterically> i think that's the
      motto of half the people i saw yesterday <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:0970:Z4>
      <laughs><&>17:00</&> it is</laughs> <{><[><O>laughs</O></[> you
      come out of church and they try to take you out mate

  <WSC#DGB050:0975:HG>
      <[><O>laughs</O></[></{>

  <WSC#DGB050:0980:HG>
      yeah <{><[>yeah</[>

  <WSC#DGB050:0985:Z4>
      <[>hey</[></{> anyway what i'm actually ringing you about <{><[>is</[>
      i've just wondered whether you know know what the minimum wage

  <WSC#DGB050:0990:HG>
      <[><O>laughs</O></[></{>

  <WSC#DGB050:0995:HG>
      well there isn't any

  <WSC#DGB050:1000:Z4>
      on <.>th</.> on the <?>left funny</?> er side

  <WSC#DGB050:1005:Z4>
      <{><[>there</[> isn't? <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:1010:HG>
      <[><.>th</.></[></{>

  <WSC#DGB050:1015:HG>
      the there the the they <O>voc</O> there isn't anything

  <WSC#DGB050:1020:HG>
      i don't <drawls>er</drawls> there used to be but then they
      changed it into all these new contracts and things <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:1025:Z4>
      oh right <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:1030:HG>
      and they said oh the minimum you were allowed to offer but <.>i</.>
      i don't even know if it's entrenched in law now even

  <WSC#DGB050:1035:Z4>
      it's three sixty eight for a er youth

  <WSC#DGB050:1040:HG>
      yeah they have a youth rate but i <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:1045:Z4>
      yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:1050:HG>
      <.>th</.> <.>th</.> there may be there may be a legal minimum
      but if if so it's so small that no one gets it

  <WSC#DGB050:1055:Z4>
      yeah

  <WSC#DGB050:1060:HG>
      oh i don't know how they can live

  <WSC#DGB050:1065:Z4>
      oh right so what <.>i</.> what about um in in the past

  <WSC#DGB050:1070:HG>
      in the?

  <WSC#DGB050:1075:Z4>
      in the past

  <WSC#DGB050:1080:HG>
      i <.>d</.> i <.>d</.> i honestly can't remember

  <WSC#DGB050:1085:HG>
      i'd need i need to look it up <{><[>now</[>

  <WSC#DGB050:1090:HG>
      i'd i'd only be guessing it's er <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:1095:Z4>
      <[>oh right</[></{>

  <WSC#DGB050:1100:Z4>
      right

  <WSC#DGB050:1105:HG>
      <O>voc</O> i mean ask yourself now how much does a person need
      to survive today

  <WSC#DGB050:1110:Z4>
      oh a lot <&>18:00</&>

  <WSC#DGB050:1115:HG>
      and and so if you say to someone you're getting ten bucks a week
      on a forty hour week that's only four hundred dollars

  <WSC#DGB050:1120:HG>
      <{><[>well</[> by the time they've taken their tax out of that
      and you pay twelve and a half percent g s t you didn't really
      have a lot left to spend did you

  <WSC#DGB050:1125:Z4>
      <[>exactly</[></{>

  <WSC#DGB050:1130:Z4>
      exactly

  <WSC#DGB050:1135:HG>
      and that's at ten bucks an hour so for people earning less than
      that

  <WSC#DGB050:1140:Z4>
      are are not getting very much

  <WSC#DGB050:1145:HG>
      no

  <WSC#DGB050:1150:Z4>
      no <{><[>okay</[>

  <WSC#DGB050:1155:HG>
      <[>yeah?</[></{>

  <WSC#DGB050:1160:HG>
      i think <.>y</.> i honestly you need six hundred bucks a week
      now for an ordinary say dad mum and a couple of kids

  <WSC#DGB050:1165:Z4>
      yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DGB050:1170:HG>
      how the how you can survive on less than six hundred is
      absolutely beyond me when you look at normal prices for things
      no not talking about luxuries

  <WSC#DGB050:1175:Z4>
      yeah

  <WSC#DGB050:1180:HG>
      that's the truth of it

  <WSC#DGB050:1185:HG>
      <{><[>look we'll see</[> if <.>s</.> someone will be able to
      tell us the answer to that john

  <WSC#DGB050:1190:HG>
      we'll find out for you

  <WSC#DGB050:1195:Z4>
      <[>yeah it is</[></{>

  <WSC#DGB050:1200:Z4>
      cheers mate

  <WSC#DGB050:1205:HG>

      so er i thought i'd just give a ring and if that bloke's
      listening he could give me a ring if he wanted to

  <WSC#DGB050:1280:HG>

  <WSC#DGB050:1325:HG>
      i i've seen</[> the er i've seen pictures of it <?>it's a</?>

  <WSC#DGB050:1330:Z5>
      <[><O>laughs</O></[></{>

  <WSC#DGB050:1335:Z5>
      <drawls>yeah yeah</drawls> well if it's anything like
      <&>20:00</&> the picture here it certainly is beautiful all
      right but i just looking here you know it it says it <.>w</.> it
      was sold to portuguese in eighteen ninety five for five hundred
      pound then was purchased from the <.>port</.> portuguese by
      captain <?>daumin</?> of falmouth <&>pronounced foulmouth</&>
      england in nineteen twenty two for three thousand seven hundred
      and fifty pound <latch>

      er yes length is two hundred and twelve feet five inches and the
      beam was thirty six feet um zero inches

  <WSC#DGB050:1415:HG>
      two two hundred and twelve feet so it was so it would it would
      have obviously carried all the sail without any problems
      wouldn't <{><[>it</[>

  <WSC#DGB050:1420:Z5>
      <[>yeah</[></{> that's right it <.>w</.> had a nett tonnage of

  <WSC#DGB050:1425:HG>
      the we i mean <.>th</.> that's a beautiful boat but when you see
      some of the boats that those people sailed round the world on

  <WSC#DGB050:1435:HG>
