  <WSC#DGB051:0010:HE>
      hello trevor hello trevor

  <WSC#DGB051:0015:Z1>
      gidday nothing significant

  <WSC#DGB051:0020:HE>
      nothing significant

  <WSC#DGB051:0025:Z1>
      trivial <&>6:00</&>

  <WSC#DGB051:0030:HE>
      trivial?

  <WSC#DGB051:0035:HE>
      that's <{><[><.>a</.></[> that's all right

  <WSC#DGB051:0040:Z1>
      <[>yep</[></{>

  <WSC#DGB051:0045:Z1>
      good <O>tut</O>

  <WSC#DGB051:0050:Z1>
      there's one habit that most smokers develop and it's never
      talked about

  <WSC#DGB051:0055:HE>
      yep

  <WSC#DGB051:0060:Z1>
      it's got nothing to do with <?>health</?>

  <WSC#DGB051:0065:Z1>
      smoking develops the art of being a litterbug

  <WSC#DGB051:0070:HE>
      <O>tut</O> oh yes <{><[>yes yeah yeah right yeah</[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0075:Z1>
      <[>er you you</[></{> think about it

  <WSC#DGB051:0080:Z1>
      you go to ANY function

  <WSC#DGB051:0085:HE>
      yep

  <WSC#DGB051:0090:Z1>
      football any public function what do you see on the ground

  <WSC#DGB051:0095:HE>
      the stubs of cigarettes eh?

  <WSC#DGB051:0100:Z1>
      <?><.>s</.></?> used to be er matchsticks um cigarette packs
      match um <O>tut</O> used matchboxes and so on nowadays it's
      cigarette lighters but you go anywhere and i defy anyone to tell
      me that habitually throwing your cigarette butts anywhere you
      please does not develop the habit of throwing anything else <{><[>away</[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0105:HE>
      <[>yep</[></{> yeah

  <WSC#DGB051:0110:Z1>
      you go down any highway in new zealand er and you'll find it's
      just dumped it's it's just a <.>r</.> a receptacle for rubbish
      that people get into the habit of um doing <{><[>dumping</[>
      anything and everything and considering that once upon a time or
      twenty years ago more than half the population smoked

  <WSC#DGB051:0115:HE>
      <[>yeah</[></{> <&>7:00</&>

  <WSC#DGB051:0120:HE>
      yeah that's right er <{><[><?><.>y</.></?></[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0125:Z1>
      <[><.>and</.></[></{> <.>and</.> <.>and</.> to me it's an
      insidious habit <{><[>and</[> this country is a pigsty

  <WSC#DGB051:0130:Z1>
      you only have to go down say er south of bombay hills

  <WSC#DGB051:0135:HE>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DGB051:0140:HE>
      yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DGB051:0145:Z1>
      wind your car window down slow down to about twenty miles an
      hour and take a look at the side of the road

  <WSC#DGB051:0150:HE>
      i've never done <{><[><?>it i don't know</?></[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0155:Z1>
      <[>it's <.>a</.> oh look well</[></{> i have <{><[><O>laughs</O>

  <WSC#DGB051:0160:Z1>
      <laughs>it's unbelievable</laughs> <O>laughs</O></[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0165:HE>
      <[>yeah but i guess i i guess</[></{> that that would be true

  <WSC#DGB051:0170:HE>
      you see they had a huge cleanup around the world in
      environmental day about er i think it was about ten days ago and
      er there were figures and the er figures of tonnage on one <.>y</.>
      one beach of cigarette butts was enormous

  <WSC#DGB051:0175:Z1>
      incredible but you know um <{><[><O>tut</O></[> <.>i</.> i <.>w</.>
      this is one reason why i quit the army in the end because i i
      got fed up with the hypocrisy

  <WSC#DGB051:0180:HE>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DGB051:0185:HE>
      yeah

  <WSC#DGB051:0190:Z1>
      i was in the army back in the sixties and er doesn't matter what
      ranking you were below sergeant you had to do what they called
      surrounds <O>tut</O> which meant er it was a fatigue

  <WSC#DGB051:0195:HE>
      yeah <&>8:00</&>

  <WSC#DGB051:0200:Z1>
      to keep the place clean er

  <WSC#DGB051:0205:Z1>
      somebody was allocated to er walk around the barracks or what
      have you <O>tut</O> and pick up all the rubbish

  <WSC#DGB051:0210:HE>
      yes <latch>

  <WSC#DGB051:0215:Z1>
      that was dumped

  <WSC#DGB051:0220:Z1>
      most of the rubbish was cigarette butt ends and matchsticks

  <WSC#DGB051:0225:HE>
      yeah

  <WSC#DGB051:0230:Z1>
      and i was a <.>corporal</.> corporal at the time and i thought
      bugger this

  <WSC#DGB051:0235:Z1>
      on principle i refuse to pick up another man's filth <{><[>so i</[>
      didn't do it and i was to be charged

  <WSC#DGB051:0240:Z1>
      i was to be court martialled if i didn't obey an order

  <WSC#DGB051:0245:HE>
      <[>yeah</[></{>

  <WSC#DGB051:0250:HE>
      <laughs>is that right <{><[>yeah</laughs></[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0255:Z1>
      <[>yep</[></{> and i thought well if that's your stinking
      attitude you know where you can stick the <laughs>army</laughs>
      so i'd just ruin a career

  <WSC#DGB051:0260:HE>
      so you left <{><[>you left the army</[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0265:Z1>
      <[>er oh i <?>lie</?></[></{> did what i was told

  <WSC#DGB051:0270:HE>
      yeah

  <WSC#DGB051:0275:Z1>
      but i made my point and everybody agreed that <latch>

  <WSC#DGB051:0280:HE>
      mm <latch>

  <WSC#DGB051:0285:Z1>
      on principle i was dead right

  <WSC#DGB051:0290:Z1>
      nobody should <.>be</.> have to pick up another man's filth <{><[>and</[>
      it was wrong for a nonsmoker to pick up er smokers' cigarette
      butts but there was one funny <O>tut</O> side to all this <O>tut</O>
      er

  <WSC#DGB051:0295:Z1>
      a s c they're the chaps who used to drive the trucks
      transporting goods around the countryside

  <WSC#DGB051:0300:HE>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DGB051:0305:HE>
      yeah

  <WSC#DGB051:0310:Z1>
      er if they had a load they'd take it up to the <&>9:00</&>
      transport park and park it up as they should do

  <WSC#DGB051:0315:HE>
      mhm

  <WSC#DGB051:0320:Z1>
      well this chap <O>laughs</O> he came <.>t</.> back to the
      barracks er at linton in <.>that</.> in those days they had a
      brand new three storey barrack block and he parked alongside the
      building

  <WSC#DGB051:0325:Z1>
      now there's a couple of hundred of guys sleeping in those
      barrack blocks <&>pronounced bocks</&> um <O>tut</O> <?>by the</?>
      barracks and in the morning <O>sniffs</O> er somebody realised
      there was some smoke around something was on fire and someone
      had the good fortune to stick their head out the window and have
      a look

  <WSC#DGB051:0330:HE>
      mm

  <WSC#DGB051:0335:Z1>
      and there was this truck and trailer unit on <{><[>fire</[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0340:HE>
      <[><laughs>oh</[></{> no</laughs>

  <WSC#DGB051:0345:Z1>
      and er so they just gently enquired around you know who's got
      the truck outside and when they found out there was all panic
      stations

  <WSC#DGB051:0350:Z1>
      it was loaded with ammunition <{1><[1><O>laughs</O></[1> and a
      guy <{2><[2><?>had put the</?></[2>

  <WSC#DGB051:0355:HE>
      <[1>oh no</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DGB051:0360:HE>
      <[2>that's the amazing</[2></{2> thing about smokers

  <WSC#DGB051:0365:HE>
      they never seem to think do they <{1><[1>where they</[1> throw
      the cigarette <{2><[2>yeah</[2>

  <WSC#DGB051:0370:Z1>
      <[1>they don't</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DGB051:0375:Z1>
      <[2>they</[2></{2> what the guys used to do they'd have um
      ashtrays in their rooms

  <WSC#DGB051:0380:HE>
      mm

  <WSC#DGB051:0385:Z1>
      and instead of putting <?>it</?> in the rubbish bin they'd just
      open the window and toss it out and this guy that's what he did

  <WSC#DGB051:0390:Z1>
      he tossed his <drawls>um</drawls> spent <laughs>cigarette butts</laughs>
      and some of them were <{1><[1>still alight</[1> and it fell on
      top of <drawls>the</drawls> <.>on</.> on top of <&>10:00</&> the
      canvas er cover on the truck and trailer unit which <.>had</.>
      was covered in er <{2><[2>well loaded</[2> with ammunition
      <latch>

  <WSC#DGB051:0395:HE>
      <[1><unclear>word</unclear> <?>yeah</?></[1></{1>

  <WSC#DGB051:0400:HE>
      <[2><O>exhales</O></[2></{2>

  <WSC#DGB051:0405:HE>
      yeah

  <WSC#DGB051:0410:Z1>
      tell you what there was panic <{><[><O>laughs</O></[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0415:HE>
      <[>i bet there would be

  <WSC#DGB051:0420:HE>
      okay trevor well</[></{> you've started off the ball rolling
      there by saying smokers are the most untidy people in new
      zealand

  <WSC#DGB051:0425:HE>
      now if you're a smoker can you defend that or not um and if
      you're a nonsmoker and you've got to clean up after er occasions
      where there is smoking is it as bad as it used to be or have
      smokers along with er becoming conscious of going outside and so
      on when there's smoking also improved er their cleanliness
      habits yes or no

  <WSC#DGB051:0430:HE>
      give us a call three oh nine three oh double nine and we'll be
      talking to jerry and to you in just a moment <&>10:46</&> <&>seventeen
      minutes twenty one seconds not transcribed comprising the next
      three callers who all sound british plus commercials and HE's
      monologue</&> <&>28:07</&>

  <WSC#DGB051:0435:HE>
      and er it's <.>jac</.> er no phillipa from nelson then jacob

  <WSC#DGB051:0440:HE>
      hello phillipa how are you

  <WSC#DGB051:0445:Z2>

  <WSC#DGB051:0450:HE>
      yes

  <WSC#DGB051:0455:Z2>
      <?><.>wait</.> on one moment just</?> turn the radio down

  <WSC#DGB051:0460:HE>
      good phillipa you do that

  <WSC#DGB051:0465:HE>
      <?>don't er</?> remember if you're a first time caller
      especially to turn your radio down cos er it comes back to you
      about five six or seven seconds later

  <WSC#DGB051:0470:HE>
      can be er a bit upsetting when you're trying to talk against it

  <WSC#DGB051:0475:HE>
      are you there <.>phillip</.> hello phillipa may have <{><[><.>tr</.></[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0480:Z2>

  <WSC#DGB051:0490:Z2>
      well ewing <&>pronounced lewing</&> you know this <?>PASSive <&>pronounced
      ASHis</&></?> smoking

  <WSC#DGB051:0495:HE>
      mm

  <WSC#DGB051:0500:Z2>
      <?>it's</?> a bit of pain in the neck

  <WSC#DGB051:0505:Z2>
      i started nursing at a very young age

  <WSC#DGB051:0510:HE>
      yes

  <WSC#DGB051:0515:Z2>
      and a doctor suggested i have a cigarette to go to a post mortem
      and since that day i've smoked

  <WSC#DGB051:0520:HE>
      is that <{><[>right <?>do you</?></[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0525:Z2>
      <[>our doctors</[></{> used to smoke pipes but i hadn't seen

      i <.>thin</.> i know there <{><[>has</[> been the odd <drawls>few</drawls>

  <WSC#DGB051:0535:HE>
      <[>no</[></{>

  <WSC#DGB051:0540:HE>
      would you say it's <.>a</.> it's addictive like er other drugs

  <WSC#DGB051:0545:Z2>
      addictive it's the biggest addictive drug <&>pronounced as dug</&>
      drug you could get

  <WSC#DGB051:0550:HE>
      yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DGB051:0555:Z2>
      i mean it takes eighteen months for the nicotine to get out of
      your system doesn't it

  <WSC#DGB051:0560:HE>
      that's right yeah

  <WSC#DGB051:0565:Z2>
      but the thing is you know was that er what are they going to do
      you know <?>ask</?> johnny banks <.>do</.> don't <.>d</.> please
      don't bring in euthanasia

  <WSC#DGB051:0570:Z2>
      just because we smoke old johnny might say bring in <{><[>euthanasia

  <WSC#DGB051:0575:HE>
      <[><O>laughs</O></[></{> <laughs>yeah that's right</laughs>

  <WSC#DGB051:0580:Z2>
      so you know i just think let's smoke if we want to smoke

  <WSC#DGB051:0585:Z2>
      i get a bit angry when you go into a restaurant or somewhere for
      a meal and you've got to sit in a certain place because you have
      to smoke

  <WSC#DGB051:0590:Z2>
      it's getting so <.>un</.> unacceptable

  <WSC#DGB051:0595:HE>
      yeah well of <{><[>course</[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0600:Z2>
      <[>you know</[></{> it's not really fair because we have our

  <WSC#DGB051:0605:HE>
      <[>yeah</[></{>

  <WSC#DGB051:0610:HE>
      is it fair though on a person with say asthma if you're sitting
      next to them and smoking <{><[>that you know can <.>can</.> <.>c</.></[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0615:Z2>
      <[>no well if they <.>d</.> if they don't want</[></{> you to

      and not um you know be worried about the smoke <{><[>won't they</[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0620:HE>

  <WSC#DGB051:0640:HE>
      <[><.>wha</.></[></{> what do you what did you think of trevor

      in the world <latch>

  <WSC#DGB051:0645:Z2>
      well i think that's a bit of rubbish too

  <WSC#DGB051:0650:Z2>
      that's <{><[>only that's new zealanders</[>

  <WSC#DGB051:0655:HE>
      <[>where do you where do you where <.>do</.></[></{> where do

      <[>yeah</[></{>
