  <WSC#DGZ073:0005:SM>
      you see for those of us like me who grew up during the great
      depression this is no problem because there was no money

  <WSC#DGZ073:0010:CF>
      yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0015:SM>
      i was one of five children <O>tut</O> with the mother and father
      in the house and a grandmother and the father unemployed and the
      family had a pound a week to live on ONE pound that's two
      dollars <,>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0020:SM>
      um out of that had to come the rent which was five shillings

  <WSC#DGZ073:0025:CF>
      god <latch>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0030:SM>
      and then fifteen shillings which is a dollar fifty now these
      days was for the food for the eight of us

  <WSC#DGZ073:0035:SM>
      now you could <.>buy</.> you could do that and <{><[>we had a
      cow</[> we had a cow <&>10:00</&> and because we had a cow we
      had skimmed milk and so my father kept a pig

  <WSC#DGZ073:0040:CF>
      <[>not now <O>laughs</O></[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0045:CF>
      mm

  <WSC#DGZ073:0050:SM>
      and he was able to slaughter the pig once a year and then we'd
      buy a little piglet again and we were able to make our own
      butter <O>tut</O> and we had fruit growing <{><[>so</[> we had
      that and we grew vegetables and we were actually able to give
      away skimmed milk as we set the milk in a big pan and you took
      the cream off and you made your own butter and we used to take
      turns churning the butter

  <WSC#DGZ073:0055:SM>
      now this is how i grew up

  <WSC#DGZ073:0060:SM>
      <O>voc</O> <slowly>every penny</slowly> was important

  <WSC#DGZ073:0065:CF>
      <[>right</[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0070:CF>
      yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0075:SM>
      my whole generation grew up like this <,,>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0080:SM>
      <.>young</.> <.>people</.> parents NEVER discuss money with
      their children now

  <WSC#DGZ073:0085:SM>
      <{1><[1>they</[1> feel it's sort of vulgar

  <WSC#DGZ073:0090:SM>
      well a lot of new zealand is suddenly having to do this and find
      how they're going to live on practically nothing

  <WSC#DGZ073:0095:SM>
      <{2><[2>we</[2> have recipes we give to students <,>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0100:SM>
      <{3><[3>alison</[3> holst reckons you can feed yourself on
      twenty dollars a week very healthily and she's got <{4><[4>recipes
      in a very good little book</[4>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0105:CF>
      <[1>no</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0110:CF>
      <[2>mm</[2></{2> <&>11:00</&>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0115:CF>
      <[3><?><.>i've</.></?></[3></{3>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0120:CF>
      <[4><O>laughs</O> it sounds</[4></{4> like you'd be losing
      weight a bit <{><[><O>laughs</O></[>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0125:SM>
      <[>no</[></{> well probably cos <?>you <.>could</.></?> <.>you</.>
      but you're eating a lot of fresh vegetables and fruit and <{><[>things</[>
      like that but you're getting them when they're cheap but you're
      also eating a lot of muesli because you can make that yourself

  <WSC#DGZ073:0130:CF>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0135:CF>
      yeah

  <WSC#DGZ073:0140:SM>
      that's cheap <{><[>and</[> just a little bit of er dried fruit
      in it makes it go but you see the young woman who didn't know
      what she spent her money on

  <WSC#DGZ073:0145:CF>
      <[><?>okay</?></[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0150:CF>
      did she go to mcdonald's a lot and <{><[>things</[>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0155:SM>
      <[>no</[></{> no no but she buys all her food at lunchtimes here
      on the caf and i said how much do you spend and she said oh
      three or four dollars and i said what do you buy and she told me
      and i just kept adding it up and i said maybe seven dollars a
      day seven fifty

  <WSC#DGZ073:0160:CF>
      THAT'S <{><[>INCREDIBLE</[>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0165:SM>
      <[>yeah and i said how <.>many</.></[></{> how many cups of
      coffee

  <WSC#DGZ073:0170:SM>
      you watch the students around

  <WSC#DGZ073:0175:CF>
      they drink coffee quite <{><[>a lot</[> don't they

  <WSC#DGZ073:0180:SM>
      <[>they do</[></{> <&>12:00</&>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0185:CF>
      i've started <{><[>it myself a wee <laughs>bit</laughs></[>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0190:SM>
      <[>not just coffee</[></{> not just coffee <{><[>cappucinos</[>
      cappucinos

  <WSC#DGZ073:0195:CF>
      <[><?><drawls>yeah</drawls></?> <O>laughs</O></[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0200:CF>
      yeah

  <WSC#DGZ073:0205:SM>
      and you say er how many cappucinos

  <WSC#DGZ073:0210:SM>
      oh i only have one a day

  <WSC#DGZ073:0215:SM>
      oh that's about eight dollars a week

  <WSC#DGZ073:0220:SM>
      WHAT

  <WSC#DGZ073:0225:CF>
      <O>voc</O> yeah

  <WSC#DGZ073:0230:SM>
      you see <.>they're</.> <,> you have this generation which has
      never had to stop and think about where the money comes from and
      how it goes <latch>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0235:CF>
      mm

  <WSC#DGZ073:0240:SM>
      and so you have young men coming in who <O>tut</O> say i'm broke
      and i say er oh you know sorry

  <WSC#DGZ073:0245:SM>
      how can i help you

  <WSC#DGZ073:0250:SM>
      let's have a look at what you spend your money on um <O>tut</O>
      and we talk about it their rent and their food and transport the
      clothes they buy their share of the power the phone <O>tut</O>
      and er do you play sport

  <WSC#DGZ073:0255:SM>
      oh yeah i play footie on saturday <{><[>and er do you <.>go</.>
      do you</[> go to the pub with the boys afterwards

  <WSC#DGZ073:0260:SM>
      yeah yeah

  <WSC#DGZ073:0265:SM>
      how much do you spend

  <WSC#DGZ073:0270:SM>
      oh i always take twenty five bucks <,> <O>claps</O> <&>13:00</&>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0275:CF>
      <[>and then where do you go <O>laughs</O></[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0280:CF>
      yeah expensive isn't it

  <WSC#DGZ073:0285:SM>
      <drawls>that's</drawls> like a fifth <,> of their weekly income

  <WSC#DGZ073:0290:CF>
      you drink it away

  <WSC#DGZ073:0295:CF>
      it doesn't <{><[>go anywhere</[> does it

  <WSC#DGZ073:0300:SM>
      <[>that's right</[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0305:SM>
      piss it up against the wall

  <WSC#DGZ073:0310:CF>
      <O>laughs</O> yeah <,>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0315:CF>
      <{><[>um</[> yeah i was thinking for ME um you know if i decided
      i didn't want to get a loan i was thinking i could work over the
      summer holidays

  <WSC#DGZ073:0320:SM>
      <[><.>so</.></[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0325:SM>
      yeah

  <WSC#DGZ073:0330:CF>
      now if i couldn't find a job <{><[>what <.>c</.></[> CAN i go on
      the dole

  <WSC#DGZ073:0335:SM>
      <[>you could go on the dole</[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0340:SM>
      you can <{><[>go on</[> the dole as soon as the academic year is
      over

  <WSC#DGZ073:0345:SM>
      there'll be a stand down of probably a fortnight

  <WSC#DGZ073:0350:CF>
      <[><?>i can</?></[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0355:CF>
      mm

  <WSC#DGZ073:0360:SM>
      but you should go INto um income support and register beforehand
      <{1><[1>and</[1> then you'll get a minimum stand down <O>tut</O>
      so that about a week before the end of the academic year you go
      in and you register and then um they can give you <&>14:00</&> a
      dole which is about a hundred and nine dollars something like
      that per week

  <WSC#DGZ073:0365:SM>
      that's <.>i</.> <{2><[2>if you're gonna go home you're gonna
      live at home and your parents will keep you</[2> you can save
      say sixty dollars a week

  <WSC#DGZ073:0370:CF>
      <[1>right</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0375:CF>
      <[2>it's not great <.>but</.> yeah i can live at home and i can
      pay <quietly>things</quietly></[2></{2>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0380:CF>
      right

  <WSC#DGZ073:0385:SM>
      and if you save sixty dollars a week two hundred and forty three

  <WSC#DGZ073:0390:SM>
      that's about a thousand dollars you'll save over the long <{><[>vacation
      <,>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0395:SM>
      we reckon that</[> <O>clears throat</O> if you're living on a
      student allowance or <,,> on the living part of the student loan
      that you need about two thousand dollars extra

  <WSC#DGZ073:0400:CF>
      <[>right <unclear>word</unclear></[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0405:CF>
      right

  <WSC#DGZ073:0410:SM>
      so that you say the loan and the course allowance and the living
      allowance gives you about seven thousand dollars

  <WSC#DGZ073:0415:SM>
      the MINIMUM for a year at a university is about nine thousand

  <WSC#DGZ073:0420:CF>
      <O>tut</O> expensive isn't it

  <WSC#DGZ073:0425:SM>
      mm <O>tut</O> <&>15:00</&>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0430:CF>
      so yeah i can get one thousand um

  <WSC#DGZ073:0435:SM>
      um but if you're living at home and <.>you</.> you see you can
      earn up to fifty dollars a week and be on the dole

  <WSC#DGZ073:0440:CF>
      oh right

  <WSC#DGZ073:0445:SM>
      and then every dollar over fifty you lose a dollar off your dole
      until it cuts out

  <WSC#DGZ073:0450:SM>
      so you could be making <,> a hundred and fifty nine dollars a
      week if you could get a little part time job babysitting house
      cleaning that sort of thing <latch>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0455:CF>
      mm well i've done a bit of that actually <{><[><unclear>word</unclear></[>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0460:SM>
      <[>okay so</[></{> you could get a hundred and fifty

  <WSC#DGZ073:0465:SM>
      you could then save a hundred a week

  <WSC#DGZ073:0470:CF>
      mm i could <{><[>probably</[> save more i think

  <WSC#DGZ073:0475:SM>
      <[>right?</[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0480:SM>
      well <.>just</.> <{><[>i mean</[> you've got to live as well and
      a hundred a week is um is what four hundred a month for three
      months is twelve thirteen hundred dollars

  <WSC#DGZ073:0485:CF>
      <[><O>laughs</O></[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0490:CF>
      mm

  <WSC#DGZ073:0495:SM>
      that's for november december january february you <.>could</.>
      you could probably save fifteen hundred dollars doing that

  <WSC#DGZ073:0500:CF>
      right <&>16:00</&>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0505:SM>
      <O>tut</O> that's not too far off the two thousand a year

  <WSC#DGZ073:0510:CF>
      no <,,> and that'd be close with a loan

  <WSC#DGZ073:0515:SM>
      well <.>that's</.> that would give you with the loan and all the
      money that goes with it <.>fifteen</.> seven thousand <.>and</.>
      eight and a half thousand

  <WSC#DGZ073:0520:SM>
      you're about <.>five</.> five hundred to a thousand short but
      then <.>you</.> <{><[>you <.>could</.></[>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0525:CF>
      <[>i could</[></{> go without those coffees i <laughs>suppose</laughs>
      <latch>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0530:SM>
      you could do without those coffees yeah

  <WSC#DGZ073:0535:SM>
      <{><[>yeah you could think of all those sorts of good things to
      do and you know</[> yeah right

  <WSC#DGZ073:0540:CF>
      <[>but it's quite a lot of fun just sitting round <.>doing</.>
      <O>laughs</O></[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0545:CF>
      mm

  <WSC#DGZ073:0550:SM>
      what else <,>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0555:CF>
      i don't know

  <WSC#DGZ073:0560:CF>
      that's about all i needed to ask you

  <WSC#DGZ073:0565:SM>
      you've got to become very conscious <{><[>if <.>you</.></[> if
      you're going to budget carefully you've got to become conscious
      not merely of your DAILY expenditure but of the PATTERN of your
      expenditure and you say to yourself that allows me so much a
      week

  <WSC#DGZ073:0570:SM>
      i've worked all this out so much a week

  <WSC#DGZ073:0575:SM>
      that means so much a month and if i <&>17:00</&> can stay within
      that i've got a little bit of money to put on one side in my
      mind for maybe a splash

  <WSC#DGZ073:0580:CF>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0585:CF>
      mm <latch>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0590:SM>
      you'll have to do that for some things

  <WSC#DGZ073:0595:SM>
      we've all got to do that sort of thing <{><[>cos that's life</[>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0600:CF>
      <[>yeah</[></{> yeah

  <WSC#DGZ073:0605:SM>
      um <,,> i've also got to think of what might happen if i have to
      go to the dentist

  <WSC#DGZ073:0610:SM>
      i think you've got to look ahead and say i should register with
      <.>the</.> the student health centre at the beginning of the
      year costs you <{><[>fifty</[> bucks <latch>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0615:CF>
      <[>right</[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0620:CF>
      cos i haven't done that

  <WSC#DGZ073:0625:SM>
      you should do it <,>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0630:SM>
      then you get all the health for <O>laughs</O>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0635:CF>
      um i <.>thought</.> i've got a community services card

  <WSC#DGZ073:0640:SM>
      yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0645:CF>
      and i was told that it was better to have one of them than to
      join the <{><[>student health</[>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0650:SM>
      <[>have both</[></{> no have both

  <WSC#DGZ073:0655:CF>
      really <latch>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0660:SM>
      because with your community service card you don't have to have
      many visits to the doctor even with the community service card
      to use up fifty bucks

  <WSC#DGZ073:0665:CF>
      mm but isn't it about five dollars each time you go

  <WSC#DGZ073:0670:CF>
      is <{><[>that right</[>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0675:SM>
      <[><O>tut</O></[></{> it depends on the doctor <{><[>or if</[>
      you've got to go to a specialist

  <WSC#DGZ073:0680:CF>
      <[>right</[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0685:CF>
      cos i haven't been to the doctor all year <{><[>so i've been
      pretty lucky</[>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0690:SM>
      <[>well you're lucky</[></{> you're lucky

  <WSC#DGZ073:0695:SM>
      I think that fifty dollars and having a card is good
      <&>18:00</&> insurance policy good <{><[><?>sense</?></[>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0700:CF>
      <[>right</[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0705:SM>
      um because the <.>ca</.> the card is extremely useful <O>clears
      throat</O> when you're paying for prescriptions

  <WSC#DGZ073:0710:CF>
      mm

  <WSC#DGZ073:0715:SM>
      um <,>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0720:SM>
      <O>tut</O> those are the sort of things that are part of the
      pattern of being aware of the pattern of trying to forestall
      crises <{><[><,></[> um <,,>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0725:SM>
      when you're home in the vacation make sure that the family
      dentist has a look at your teeth and does anything necessary

  <WSC#DGZ073:0730:CF>
      <[>yeah</[></{>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0735:CF>
      yeah

  <WSC#DGZ073:0740:SM>
      all right?

  <WSC#DGZ073:0745:SM>
      er then you can say to yourself well i can go for twelve months
      wait till i get home again

  <WSC#DGZ073:0750:SM>
      make sure that you've got enough serviceable clothes and
      especially serviceable footwear

  <WSC#DGZ073:0755:CF>
      yeah

  <WSC#DGZ073:0760:SM>
      er search out what you've got at home and make sure it's <.>in</.>
      <.>all</.> all in good repair

  <WSC#DGZ073:0765:SM>
      then you're not going to have to suddenly say i <&>19:00</&>
      haven't got a raincoat i need a warm coat <latch>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0770:CF>
      mm

  <WSC#DGZ073:0775:SM>
      well even if you go to an op shop that's going to cost you
      twenty thirty dollars <,>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0780:SM>
      if you DO have to buy clothes go to an op shop

  <WSC#DGZ073:0785:SM>
      <.>when</.> if you're in a flat and you're buying food you go to
      supermarkets that have discounts

  <WSC#DGZ073:0790:CF>
      yeah <{1><[1>see</[1> we live in karori and <.>it</.> we go to
      the karori <{2><[2>ones</[2>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0795:SM>
      <[1>all right?</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DGZ073:0800:SM>
      <[2>go</[2></{2> to new <.>w</.> go to new world because they
      have coupons

  <WSC#DGZ073:0805:CF>
      mm <latch>
