  <WSC#DPC010:0005:MJ>
      okay and you've got your notes there as well <{><[>is</[> that
      right

  <WSC#DPC010:0010:MJ>
      okay <,> well do you want to just walk me through sort of the
      kind of things that you're thinking about when you start doing
      <drawls>um</drawls> a story like this

  <WSC#DPC010:0015:MJ>
      what kind of things you're trying to bear in mind right from
      maybe the start when you're taking notes

  <WSC#DPC010:0020:BN>
      <[>yeah</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC010:0025:BN>
      um

  <WSC#DPC010:0030:MJ>
      other than practising your short hand

  <WSC#DPC010:0035:BN>
      <O>laughs</O>

  <WSC#DPC010:0040:MJ>
      <{><[><O>laughs</O></[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0045:XX>
      <[>do you mind me</[></{> listening because i'm about to write a
      story <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0050:MJ>
      no no that's okay <{1><[1>i mean</[1> you probably have <O>voc</O>
      <,>

  <WSC#DPC010:0055:MJ>
      um oh no i mean this is just one <?>up</?> you know how barry's
      sort of <.>going</.> i mean i'll do it again with <{2><[2>you</[2>
      individually <{3><[3>i think is probably better</[3>

  <WSC#DPC010:0060:XX>
      <[1>yeah</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC010:0065:XX>
      <[2>yeah</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC010:0070:XX>
      <[3>so i just write this</[3></{3> and not <.>print</.>

  <WSC#DPC010:0075:XX>
      do you want me <{><[>to print it</[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0080:MJ>
      <[>yeah if you wouldn't</[></{> mind <.>dumping</.> um every so
      often just so we can see what you're doing what kind of changes
      you make that would be great <,,>

  <WSC#DPC010:0085:BN>
      <O>tut</O> well basically what i do is um <,,> go <&>1:00</&>
      straight from my notes

  <WSC#DPC010:0090:BN>
      <?>i mean i go through</?> and transcribe my notes straight onto
      the pad and then go through and order <.>an</.> and <,> put them
      in like um <,,> written <,,> onto the computer <{1><[1><,,></[1>
      um in reported speech and <{2><[2><.>then</.></[2>

  <WSC#DPC010:0095:MJ>
      <[1>okay</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC010:0100:MJ>
      <[2>okay</[2></{2> and that's just in <.>ex</.> exactly the
      order that it comes out in the interview <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0105:BN>
      um <.>nor</.> normally <.>wh</.> <.>i</.> i <,,> i go through
      maybe the first half or two thirds

  <WSC#DPC010:0110:BN>
      sometimes i go through the whole thing sometimes i go through
      the first half or two thirds and then get <.>to</.> to a quote
      down here that related to something that i remember from back up
      here and then i start <{1><[1>arranging it</[1>

  <WSC#DPC010:0115:BN>
      but um <,> sort of to start with anyway i just go through in
      order

  <WSC#DPC010:0120:BN>
      um because it's the quickest way to get it onto the screen and
      then all i have to do <.>is</.> is tidy it up <.>and</.> and
      rearrange the paragraphs and <?>make an intro for it</?> <{2><[2>um</[2>

  <WSC#DPC010:0125:BN>
      so it's just <.>the</.> if you go through in order it's the
      quickest <,> um way through

  <WSC#DPC010:0130:MJ>
      <[1>mhm</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC010:0135:MJ>
      <[2>okay</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC010:0140:MJ>
      okay <,,><&>3</&> <&>2:00</&>

  <WSC#DPC010:0145:BN>
      um and then <.>from</.> from there to there <.>is</.> is just um
      going through and rearranging the paragraphs

  <WSC#DPC010:0150:MJ>
      okay so <{1><[1>is</[1> the first draft that's actually just
      what you've taken off your notes

  <WSC#DPC010:0155:MJ>
      that's <{2><[2>basically</[2> just a printout of your notes is
      it

  <WSC#DPC010:0160:BN>
      <[1>mm</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC010:0165:BN>
      <[2>yeah</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC010:0170:BN>
      yeah

  <WSC#DPC010:0175:MJ>
      okay and so at that stage what are you trying <.>t</.> um are
      you trying to impose any order on it at that stage or is <,> <.>just</.>
      just to get this clear or are <{><[>you</[> just trying to get
      it down

  <WSC#DPC010:0180:BN>
      <[>um</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC010:0185:BN>
      <.>i</.> i get it down <.>in</.> in <,,> sort of adequate
      written <,> um form rather <.>than</.> it's not in straight note
      form or

  <WSC#DPC010:0190:BN>
      <?>i mean</?> i've selected <.>the</.> <.>the</.> the quotes
      that i want out of there and the rest of it is um in um <O>tut</O>
      <,,> <.>my</.> my voice i guess

  <WSC#DPC010:0195:MJ>
      okay <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0200:BN>
      um

  <WSC#DPC010:0205:MJ>
      do you do second edition

  <WSC#DPC010:0210:BN>
      yeah <&>telephone rings</&>

  <WSC#DPC010:0215:BN>
      <unclear>word</unclear> miss much

  <WSC#DPC010:0220:BN>
      is that my phone <,,><&>3</&>

  <WSC#DPC010:0225:BN>
      where was i up to <&>3:00</&>

  <WSC#DPC010:0230:MJ>
      oh it's okay we've <?>just reached</?> a stopping point

  <WSC#DPC010:0235:MJ>
      um what i was going to ask was um <,,> <O>tut</O> somewhere
      along the way you've actually got no structure up until now <,>

  <WSC#DPC010:0240:MJ>
      whether that was as a result of <.>the</.> <?>um i'm</?> just
      trying to find out where that comes from

  <WSC#DPC010:0245:MJ>
      i mean you know presumably when you worked out how you were
      going to do that interview you had an idea then of what kind of
      a story you wanted to write at the end of it? <,>

  <WSC#DPC010:0250:BN>
      um not especially for this one actually um which is why i'm
      <laughs>doing a third one <{><[>now</laughs></[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0255:MJ>
      <[>okay</[></{> yeah <{1><[1>no</[1> now that's <.>wh</.> that's
      interesting <{2><[2>you see yeah</[2>

  <WSC#DPC010:0260:BN>
      <[1>um</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC010:0265:BN>
      <[2><.>i</.> <.>i</.> i got</[2></{2> <.>tossed</.> i came in
      this morning and i was really busy

  <WSC#DPC010:0270:MJ>
      yep

  <WSC#DPC010:0275:BN>
      <drawls>and</drawls> um i had <,,> i think TWO things to finish
      off and one complete thing to write this morning and then i got
      told that i was doing this interview at ten oclock

  <WSC#DPC010:0280:MJ>
      mhm

  <WSC#DPC010:0285:BN>
      <?>you know this is sort of what happens</?> um <,>

  <WSC#DPC010:0290:BN>
      and <,> so i just sort of thought up a few <&>4:00</&> questions
      based on what was on the press release and what i knew about
      wine making which is what this is about <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0295:MJ>
      mhm <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0300:BN>
      um <,> but didn't <,,> i mean <.>th</.> the press release didn't
      look that enthralling and i didn't have any particularly clear
      idea of <.>what</.> what in it was going to make an interesting
      story i just hoped that if i got her started she would <.>ma</.>
      she would say some interesting things

  <WSC#DPC010:0305:MJ>
      okay <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0310:BN>
      um and it turned out that she wanted <.>t</.> to publicise her
      winery which i think an interesting story <?>makes um</?>

  <WSC#DPC010:0315:MJ>
      mm <{><[>yeah okay</[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0320:BN>
      <[>mm that's why i've</[></{> been keeping in touch with her

  <WSC#DPC010:0325:MJ>
      okay yeah so that's your problem then is it is

  <WSC#DPC010:0330:MJ>
      that you know you wanted her to actually take control of this
      not to MAKE the story but then this <,> yeah

  <WSC#DPC010:0335:BN>
      well <.>there</.> yeah <.>th</.> there wasn't <,> on <.>the</.>
      on the information we already had there wasn't an obvious angle
      for a story there

  <WSC#DPC010:0340:BN>
      um i <.>was</.> i was only doing the interview because it had
      already <&>5:00</&> been jacked up for me <.>an</.> i'd been
      told to <{><[><O>laughs</O></[> basically

  <WSC#DPC010:0345:MJ>
      <[>okay</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC010:0350:MJ>
      well what about the changes you made then between this the first
      printout and the second one um <,>

  <WSC#DPC010:0355:MJ>
      what sort of changes did you make and WHY

  <WSC#DPC010:0360:MJ>
      i mean i'm looking for example at the first paragraph which is
      new <,> okay <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0365:BN>
      um oh that's just an intro <{><[>um</[> not a very interesting
      one <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0370:MJ>
      <[>yeah</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC010:0375:MJ>
      yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0380:BN>
      um based on what the <.>wh</.> the story is about her coming <.>h</.>
      coming back because <,> um <,> i feel a bit that she wants to
      promote her winery so that's <{><[><,> <unclear>word</unclear></[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0385:MJ>
      <[>okay <.>s</.></[></{> so is that you trying to turn the
      return home <.>into</.> into basically into the story then are
      you

  <WSC#DPC010:0390:BN>
      yeah

  <WSC#DPC010:0395:MJ>
      okay

  <WSC#DPC010:0400:BN>
      <.>i</.> er it's just er an intro for news is basically a
      capsule of whatever follows

  <WSC#DPC010:0405:MJ>
      okay <{><[>okay so <.>you</.></[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0410:BN>
      <[>so <.>it</.></[></{> this is sort of instant summary

  <WSC#DPC010:0415:MJ>
      okay so you're trying to define then what the rest of the story
      is going to be about are you

  <WSC#DPC010:0420:BN>
      yes

  <WSC#DPC010:0425:MJ>
      okay <,> <O>tut</O> you haven't done much rearranging
      <&>6:00</&> of what's actually inside of it i notice <,> that
      most of it's just a straight transfer

  <WSC#DPC010:0430:MJ>
      is that right?

  <WSC#DPC010:0435:MJ>
      that's just a quick look so i'm not too sure

  <WSC#DPC010:0440:BN>
      mm <.>i</.> i can't actually remember but it could be <,,>

  <WSC#DPC010:0445:BN>
      see <.>al</.> all the information comes out in groups and <.>j</.>
      you just have to group it <,> sentences or paragraphs up and
      down <?>on <{><[><.>the</.></?></[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0450:MJ>
      <[>okay</[></{> but it's <.>qui</.> <{><[><.>it's</.> it's a
      little bit longer</[> so i'm just wondering what else you've
      added

  <WSC#DPC010:0455:MJ>
      maybe it's just the first paragraph

  <WSC#DPC010:0460:BN>
      <[>i can't really remember</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC010:0465:BN>
      possibly yes

  <WSC#DPC010:0470:MJ>
      mm <,,><&>3</&> yeah it might be <,>

  <WSC#DPC010:0475:BN>
      <{1><[1>yeah</[1> the second one is this long

  <WSC#DPC010:0480:BN>
      <{2><[2>the third</[2> one is the same the fourth's the same <,>

  <WSC#DPC010:0485:BN>
      the bottom's the same

  <WSC#DPC010:0490:MJ>
      <[1>okay</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC010:0495:MJ>
      <[2>yeah</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC010:0500:MJ>
      yeah it looks as though it may be just a straight

  <WSC#DPC010:0505:MJ>
      <.>th</.> that the only real change is in <.>the</.> in <{1><[1><.>the</.></[1>
      in the first paragraph <{2><[2>okay

  <WSC#DPC010:0510:MJ>
      you've just added an intro</[2>

  <WSC#DPC010:0515:BN>
      <[1>yeah</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC010:0520:BN>
      <[2><.>it's</.> it's probably <.>been</.></[2></{2> it's
      probably been tidied up a bit as well

  <WSC#DPC010:0525:MJ>
      okay

  <WSC#DPC010:0530:BN>
      <.>wh</.> what <.>i</.> i'm trying <.>to</.> <.>that's</.> that
      was actually them calling back to say where i could <&>7:00</&>
      get in touch with her so that um <,> cos what i want to find out
      <.>is</.> is how she actually landed the job because it's in a
      top winery um <.>and</.> and it's this little new zealander

  <WSC#DPC010:0535:BN>
      i want to know whether <.>th</.> that's common for new
      zealanders <.>to</.> to land top winery jobs in australia and
      how she actually got onto it and things like that <{><[>and why</[>
      she went back to australia

  <WSC#DPC010:0540:MJ>
      <[>okay</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC010:0545:MJ>
      so you decided to do that on the basis of what the <drawls>um</drawls>
      chief reporter said to you or what <{><[>yeah okay</[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0550:BN>
      <[>yeah</[></{> <,,> <.>i</.> i think if it was up to me i
      probably wouldn't have done the story at all so <{><[><O>laughs</O></[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0555:MJ>
      <[>yeah okay because it doesn't</[></{> interest you that much

  <WSC#DPC010:0560:BN>
      <?>right</?>

  <WSC#DPC010:0565:MJ>
      okay well in general then what are you trying to remember when
      you're writing a story

  <WSC#DPC010:0570:MJ>
      what sort of principles do you try and keep in mind when you're
      doing it

  <WSC#DPC010:0575:BN>
      <O>tut</O> um i'm not really sure cos it's sort <{><[>of</[>
      fairly habitual process

  <WSC#DPC010:0580:BN>
      <.>th</.> <.>on</.> only um the only thing that seems to
      difficult in news writing is tenses because you've got um

  <WSC#DPC010:0585:BN>
      there's a sort of convention using present tense when you're
      stating <?>the part</?> that you're stating and past tense when
      you're <.>quoting</.> when you're paraphrasing someone else um
      and if you in the same sentence mix something that you're saying
      with something that <.>someone</.> <.>w</.> that the person
      you're quoting is saying <.>then</.> then you get into all sorts
      <.>of</.> <laughs>of</laughs> tense trouble <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0590:MJ>
      <[>mm</[></{> <&>8:00</&>

  <WSC#DPC010:0595:MJ>
      <softly>mm</softly> <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0600:BN>
      um but other <.>than</.> i'm not <.>really</.>

  <WSC#DPC010:0605:MJ>
      okay so that's a learned convention that you have to pick up
      <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0610:BN>
      yeah it is

  <WSC#DPC010:0615:MJ>
      yeah are there any other learned conventions you've had to pick
      up <,,>

  <WSC#DPC010:0620:BN>
      um yeah oh <.>there</.> <.>there</.> there's um <,,> there's the
      structure pyramid structure which is <.>starting</.> starting at
      the most important point and then gradually <.>going</.> going
      towards the least <{><[>um</[> but i'm not sure

  <WSC#DPC010:0625:MJ>
      <[>okay</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC010:0630:MJ>
      why do you do that <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0635:BN>
      um um because of the <&>9:00</&> importance of the first
      sentence in terms of um getting the reader into the story

  <WSC#DPC010:0640:BN>
      that's the convention i don't know <{1><[1>whether</[1> <O>voc</O>
      that's always necessary <{2><[2>for it</[2>

  <WSC#DPC010:0645:MJ>
      <[1>okay</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC010:0650:MJ>
      <[2>so it's</[2></{2> to get the reader into <{><[>the</[> story
      okay

  <WSC#DPC010:0655:BN>
      <[>yeah</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC010:0660:BN>
      <.>it's</.> it's like it's um it's also for convenience sake
      because if you've got a lazy subeditor um they're going to chop
      <.>off</.> <,> they need to shorten the story then they've
      chopped off the <.>par</.> the last four paragraphs so that
      should have the least important stuff and that sort of thing <O>laughs</O>

  <WSC#DPC010:0665:MJ>
      wondering whether <{><[>you've got</[> into that cynical phase
      yet here <O>laughs</O>

  <WSC#DPC010:0670:BN>
      <[><O>laughs</O></[></{>

  <WSC#DPC010:0675:BN>
      no <.>that's</.> that's not i mean <.>that</.> that <.>you're</.>
      <.>you</.> you're taught that it's not <{><[><O>laughs</O></[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0680:MJ>
      <[>oh yeah oh good okay yeah</[></{> <,,> right <{><[>so you <.>want</.>
      <,> sorry</[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0685:BN>
      <[><unclear>word</unclear> yeah</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC010:0690:BN>
      carry on

  <WSC#DPC010:0695:MJ>
      i <.>was</.> <O>voc</O> just going to ask so you're trying to
      make sure that you get your most important points as well as
      your most general points up at the top <{><[>then are you</[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0700:BN>
      <[>mhm</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC010:0705:MJ>
      okay is that something you're trying to <&>10:00</&> remember
      all the time <{><[><.>or</.></[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0710:BN>
      <[>um</[></{> it's fairly habitual

  <WSC#DPC010:0715:BN>
      i'm <.>not</.> i'm not <,> entirely sure whether it's a
      completely taught thing or whether it's something you do when
      you're write anyway

  <WSC#DPC010:0720:MJ>
      <drawls><softly>mm</softly></drawls> <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0725:BN>
      but um <.>i</.> <.>i</.> i guess <.>it's</.> it would depend on
      the type of story <,> <.>s</.> <.>some</.> <.>li</.> like
      especially for something like this which is sort of a
      semiprofile you can quite easily start it <{><[>off</[> with it
      a um

  <WSC#DPC010:0730:MJ>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC010:0735:MJ>
      mhm

  <WSC#DPC010:0740:BN>
      <.>with</.> with a more imaginative <O>voc</O> draft

  <WSC#DPC010:0745:MJ>
      mhm

  <WSC#DPC010:0750:BN>
      mm

  <WSC#DPC010:0755:MJ>
      mm <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0760:BN>
      but in terms of basic writing if you start with the <.>most</.>
      you have to start with the summary <,> sentence or <.>a</.> or a
      sentence which <.>give</.> gets across your most important fact
      <.>because</.> <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0765:MJ>
      mhm <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0770:BN>
      then the whole process is a lot quicker

  <WSC#DPC010:0775:MJ>
      okay what's <{><[>hardest <,> mm</[>

  <WSC#DPC010:0780:BN>
      <[>otherwise it's different from <.>writing</.></[></{>
      otherwise <.>it's</.> otherwise it's like writing a short
      feature

  <WSC#DPC010:0785:MJ>
      right yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0790:BN>
      um <latch> <&>11:00</&>

  <WSC#DPC010:0795:MJ>
      yeah okay and you will have made that distinction yeah

  <WSC#DPC010:0800:BN>
      mm <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0805:MJ>
      so what's the hardest thing for you when you're writing a <.>story</.>
      a new story

  <WSC#DPC010:0810:BN>
      um

  <WSC#DPC010:0815:MJ>
      right from the word go

  <WSC#DPC010:0820:MJ>
      what's the absolutely hardest thing <,>

  <WSC#DPC010:0825:BN>
      it's not a terribly difficult process really

  <WSC#DPC010:0830:MJ>
      mm

  <WSC#DPC010:0835:BN>
      like <latch>

  <WSC#DPC010:0840:MJ>
      okay <{><[>all things are</[> relative but there must be
      something that's harder for you than the others

  <WSC#DPC010:0845:BN>
      <[>if you're <.>writing</.></[></{>

  <WSC#DPC010:0850:BN>
      if you're writing and er if you've got a really close deadline

  <WSC#DPC010:0855:BN>
      i don't like working against um <O>tut</O> i don't <.>li</.>
      don't like having to write under extreme time pressure but
      that's possibly because that's what i'm least used to about news
      writing <&>11:45</&>
</I>
