  <WSC#DPC060:0005:WC>
      okay now i've just found out that you BOTH shifted schools <,>
      when you <.>were</.> when you were children

  <WSC#DPC060:0010:JM>
      that's right

  <WSC#DPC060:0015:WC>
      right <.>wh</.> you went from karori west to

  <WSC#DPC060:0020:JM>
      i went from karori west to wimbledon in southern hawkes bay
      which was at that time <drawls>a</drawls> very small sole charge
      school and i was the only child who was NOT related to anyone
      else

  <WSC#DPC060:0025:WC>
      that must have been quite a shock

  <WSC#DPC060:0030:??>
      <{><[><unclear>word</unclear></[>

  <WSC#DPC060:0035:JM>

  <WSC#DPC060:0045:WC>
      and how did you go about adjusting to that

  <WSC#DPC060:0050:WC>
      was it easy

  <WSC#DPC060:0055:JM>
      it wasn't VEry easy

  <WSC#DPC060:0060:JM>
      i can remember quite vividly being locked in the tool shed at
      <drawls><.>play</.></drawls> play times as a sort of <,> um
      <&>1:00</&> initiation <{><[>ceremony</[>

  <WSC#DPC060:0065:WC>
      <[>BY the</[></{> other kids?

      yes <,> by all the other kids

  <WSC#DPC060:0075:VV>
      <{><[>goodness me</[>

      <[><drawls>so</drawls></[></{> it was charming but you know we

  <WSC#DPC060:0090:VV>
      that's what happens

  <WSC#DPC060:0095:VV>
      <{1><[1>children gang</[1> up <{2><[2>when they</[2> have a

      <[2>i think</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC060:0110:JM>
      i think they're quite cruel aren't they

  <WSC#DPC060:0115:VV>
      <{><[>yes yes</[>

  <WSC#DPC060:0120:WC>
      <[>oh very yes</[></{>

      oh right and they were <,> children from a farming community

  <WSC#DPC060:0165:JM>
      yes they were and my parents were from karori and they were real
      <,> city types <latch>

  <WSC#DPC060:0170:WC>
      right

  <WSC#DPC060:0175:JM>
      didn't know one end of a horse from another and of course the

  <WSC#DPC060:0185:JM>
      <.>so</.> <latch>

      on the answer

  <WSC#DPC060:0215:JM>
      it's probably MY fault really because when i was seven i was
      <&>2:00</&> involved in a fairly horrendous car accident AT
      karori <{><[>on</[> the junction of tringham street and karori

  <WSC#DPC060:0225:WC>
      yes i do <latch>

  <WSC#DPC060:0230:JM>
      and i was smashed up quite badly just because i ran out into the
      road <.>and</.> <{1><[1>and</[1> collided with a <laughs>passing

      <{2><[2>they took them down carefully</[2>

  <WSC#DPC060:0335:WC>
      yes no they're going to i think

  <WSC#DPC060:0340:WC>
      i mean it was part of the idea that they should restore them
      somewhere

  <WSC#DPC060:0345:VV>
      yes

  <WSC#DPC060:0350:WC>
      was it i mean you ran out into the road <latch>

  <WSC#DPC060:0355:JM>
      oh absolutely <,> i ran out from the <?>wiffins</?> er front <,>
      front garden which now has a concrete wall going straight up and
      down so of course children can't do that sort of thing but THEN
      in nineteen forty and it was on leap year's day nineteen forty
      so i particularly remember it <,> <O>tut</O> there was a BANK
      running down to the road <{1><[1><,> which</[1> was very nice to
      run up and down <{2><[2><,>

  <WSC#DPC060:0360:JM>
      <.>we</.> <.>we</.></[2> that's what we DID on the way <{3><[3>to

      parents lived <,> and we ran up and down this bank <.>r</.>
      repeatedly <{4><[4><drawls>and</drawls></[4> onto the road of
      course and them back up and onto the road and of course it was
      just my bad luck that a car happened <laughs>to be coming along
      the <&>4:00</&> time i ran down</laughs> <,> and i was dragged
      along and thrown back and <,> smashed up <.>f</.> fairly badly
      and um

  <WSC#DPC060:0365:WC>
      <[1>aha</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC060:0370:WC>
      <[2>oh yes</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC060:0375:WC>
      <[3>on <.>b</.> right</[3></{3>

  <WSC#DPC060:0380:WC>
      <[4>oh yes</[4></{4>

  <WSC#DPC060:0385:WC>
      but really in danger of of losing your life <{><[><drawls>or yes</drawls></[>

  <WSC#DPC060:0390:JM>
      <[>well yes i think</[></{> i was fairly <{1><[1>er</[1> close

      <[1>mm</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC060:0400:VV>
      <[2>how did <drawls>the</drawls></[2></{2> um people that were
      in the car respond

  <WSC#DPC060:0405:JM>
      there was i think it was a van and i was hooked on to the er the
      handle of the van and dragged along and then the eventually the
      guy who <.>dro</.> was driving it didn't realise that anything
      had untoward had happened and he didn't even slow down i don't
      think but <{><[>eventually</[> the van door the near side van

      yes <latch>

  <WSC#DPC060:0445:JM>
      and i had my right leg smashed up and my right arm and my head
      <laughs>a bit</laughs> <O>laughs</O> <unclear>word</unclear> and
      er <?>the <.>sk</.></?> quite severe concussion and er was out
      to it i presume and <&>5:00</&> of course the people who
      gathered round tried to stand me up and get me <{><[>walking</[>

  <WSC#DPC060:0450:??>
      <[><drawls>oh</[></{> no</drawls>

  <WSC#DPC060:0455:JM>
      and that probably made things worse

  <WSC#DPC060:0460:??>
      yeah

  <WSC#DPC060:0465:JM>
      so after about a year i think i came out <unclear>word</unclear>

  <WSC#DPC060:0470:JM>
      i was the little cripple girl going to town with the er calliper
      on my leg on the tram you <{1><[1>see

  <WSC#DPC060:0475:JM>
      everyone felt</[1> very sorry for the little cripple girl <,>
      <{2><[2>but</[2> then of course it was right at the worst part
      of the war

  <WSC#DPC060:0480:WC>
      <[1>oh yes</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC060:0485:WC>
      <[2>yes</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC060:0490:WC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPC060:0495:JM>
      with er nineteen forty one which was a bad time

  <WSC#DPC060:0500:VV>
      yes

  <WSC#DPC060:0505:JM>
      and my father was lucky enough to have a good job with armstrong
      and <?>springbore</?>

  <WSC#DPC060:0510:JM>
      he was <,> er sales manager <latch>

  <WSC#DPC060:0515:WC>
      mhm <latch>

  <WSC#DPC060:0520:JM>
      and he <.>was</.> you know he'd worked up from nothing

  <WSC#DPC060:0525:JM>
      <{1><[1>his parents</[1> had nothing <{2><[2>but he</[2> was a
      selfmade man but <{3><[3>he was</[3> good plus he was um
      involved with the masonic lodge

  <WSC#DPC060:0530:JM>
      <{4><[4>he was</[4> a pass master of <?>herbert tegel</?> <,>
      and i think it was quite a wrench for them and they but they did
      come to the decision that <,> um it was probably the best thing
      for me <{5><[5><,> and</[5>

  <WSC#DPC060:0535:WC>
      <[1>right</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC060:0540:WC>

      <[4>mhm</[4></{4>

  <WSC#DPC060:0555:WC>
      <[5>right and</[5></{5> so they went up <&>6:00</&> there to

      <[>no no <laughs>they</[></{> they <{><[>my father wanted</laughs></[>

  <WSC#DPC060:0570:WC>
      aha <latch>

  <WSC#DPC060:0575:JM>
      and so he had the opportunity to take over a country store which
      <{1><[1>was what he did do</[1> <,> <{2><[2><.>and</.></[2>

  <WSC#DPC060:0580:WC>

      there were six in our family while <,> when my sister was in
      standard six <O>voc</O> the headmaster failed half the class and
      they weren't going to go on to college and my father was the
      chairman of the school committee at that stage so he went round
      and collected all the reports up and took them <&>7:00</&> into
      the education board and of course they said that yes they had
      all passed and that so of course i was going UP into that class
      the next year <latch>

  <WSC#DPC060:0635:WC>
      mhm <latch>

  <WSC#DPC060:0640:VV>

  <WSC#DPC060:0670:VV>
      she was very annoyed with me <,> and that but i <,> overcame
