      when we did our local history interviews <,> in the local <.>k</.>
      kilbirnie lyall bay local history group <,> we <O>exhales</O> i
      mean we had a <?><.>n</.></?> thing like that

  <WSC#DPC067:0010:BU>
      yes <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0015:AN>
      so the quality of it is <{><[>is appalling</[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0020:BU>
      <[>very poor</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC067:0025:AN>
      <{><[>and it SHOULDN'T be i <.>mean</.></[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0030:BU>
      <[>yes you <.>REAL</.> you've</[></{> really got to use a
      microphone for things <{><[>like that</[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0035:AN>
      <[>we did use</[></{> a microphone <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0040:BU>
      you did? and it was still fuzzy?

  <WSC#DPC067:0045:AN>
      wasn't too bad actually but i mean the thing itself <.>was</.>
      and in actual fact you don't have to have a huge thing to make
      it really good <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0050:BU>
      no you just <{><[>need</[> a good sound system

  <WSC#DPC067:0055:XX>
      <[>yeah</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC067:0060:AN>
      <.>it</.> <.>it</.> it doesn't have <.>to</.> <{><[>i mean size
      doesn't</[> necessarily mean that it's going to be great

  <WSC#DPC067:0065:BU>
      <[>with microphone</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC067:0070:BU>
      no

  <WSC#DPC067:0075:XX>
      <.>wh</.> when did you do that history thing <,>

  <WSC#DPC067:0080:XX>
      was <.>that</.>

  <WSC#DPC067:0085:AN>
      when did we do it

  <WSC#DPC067:0090:AN>
      <.>that</.> we did it <{><[>last year</[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0095:BU>
      <[>last year</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC067:0100:AN>
      cos i'm interested in oral history you see <.>and</.> <.>and</.>
      and i've been on a <.>cour</.> oral history course <quickly>and
      i'm on this <?>no hands</?> committee <?>and he's</?> just</quickly>
      coopted me onto a sub committee which <{><[>sounds absolutely</[>
      GHASTLY <quietly><?>because</?> <unclear>word</unclear></quietly>
      the um the committee for the whole of new zealand see and um
      sally rolle and i started this local history group <,> at the
      community centre in kilbirnie <&>13:00</&>

  <WSC#DPC067:0105:AN>
      cos <.>we</.> she <.>was</.> <.>she</.> she was aware that there
      <.>was</.> there weren't many activities for OLD people <,> um
      cos they do lots of different activities but not all of them
      suit <.>o</.> you know particularly quite elderly people and she
      was also interested in getting a history group started <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0110:BU>
      <[><O>inhales</O> oh god</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC067:0115:BU>
      mm

  <WSC#DPC067:0120:AN>
      because there's not much history documented for this area

  <WSC#DPC067:0125:AN>
      there's quite a lot in miramar and there's a lot in newtown but
      somehow kilbirnie lyall bay's just really hotchpotch? <,> so we
      <.>s</.> we decided that we'd get this group going and i must
      say she's done all the work

  <WSC#DPC067:0130:AN>
      i've only sort of tagged along and helped her out but <.>she</.>
      that's what her job is mind you much more than mine is um and we
      decided that as part of the sesquicentennial year last year that
      we'd try and do an oral history interview of the group?

  <WSC#DPC067:0135:AN>
      there <?>was</?> about twelve i suppose that day

  <WSC#DPC067:0140:AN>
      <quietly>it varies depending on the weather as to how many there
      are</quietly> um <,> and we decided to <.>w</.> we didn't want
      to pick anything that was too personal because old people <?><.>f</.></?>
      find it quite difficult to talk about <,> their own lives?

  <WSC#DPC067:0145:XX>
      <quietly>oh yeah</quietly> <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0150:AN>
      i think it's a combination sort of <.>perhaps</.> suspicion <?><.>you</.></?>
      not wanting others to hear because <{><[>perhaps there's some
      <.>sh</.></[> <&>14:00</&>

  <WSC#DPC067:0155:BU>
      <[>plus they don't really</[></{> think of it i think <.>as</.>
      <{><[>as history

  <WSC#DPC067:0160:BU>
      i mean it's just</[> normal life for them

  <WSC#DPC067:0165:AN>
      <[>well they <.>don</.> they think it's very ordinary</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC067:0170:AN>
      <.>they</.> i mean they kept saying to us all the time <quickly>but
      you don't want us to tell you about anything</quickly>

  <WSC#DPC067:0175:AN>
      <{1><[1><?>i mean</?></[1> our lives are just so ordinary and we
      say yes but the mere fact that you've lived for sixty seventy
      years makes those lives extra ordinary by today's standards <,>
      and so we <.>ch</.> we chose the exhibition <,> which was held
      in nineteen forty over at rongotai which was um to celebrate the
      hundred years <?>which's</?> er since the signing of the treaty
      of waitangi and i mean it was a <.>new</.> it was a whole new
      zealand thing

  <WSC#DPC067:0180:AN>
      it just happened to be <{2><[2>situated</[2> right in our
      territory and it was open for <.>about</.> about three months i
      think <{3><[3>wasn't it from about</[3> november to february
      something like that from <.>ni</.> nineteen forty forty one over
      that summer period and although it was the war it was a
      FANTASTIC exhibition and most of these people who come to this
      group have lived in this area all their lives so almost all of
      them had memories of their being there fifty years ago <,> when
      they were <.>young</.> young adults <{4><[4>and they have
      wonderful stories to tell</[4>

  <WSC#DPC067:0185:BU>
      <[1><laughs>yeah</laughs></[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC067:0190:BU>
      <[2>mm</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC067:0195:BU>
      <[3>yes yep</[3></{3>

  <WSC#DPC067:0200:BU>
      <[4>yes cos there were so <.>many</.> <O>voc</O> yeah</[4></{4>
      and there was so many things for them to DO there and it was
      cheap and it was <.>i</.> in this area

  <WSC#DPC067:0205:BU>
      they could walk to it <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0210:AN>
      they could walk to it but in FACT in the end coming <.>i</.> <.>t</.>
      they had more people go to the exhibition than the population of
      new zealand so that shows how many people went <laughs>over <{><[>and
      over</laughs></[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0215:BU>
      <[>right over</[></{> and over again

  <WSC#DPC067:0220:AN>
      and <.>mister</.> mister goldstein for instance told us that he
      bought <.>a</.> <O>voc</O> a season ticket which had thirty <{1><[1>passes
      and of course</[1> if you <{2><[2>bought that</[2> you had to
      use them all up so he went THIRTY TIMES <O>all laugh</O>

  <WSC#DPC067:0225:BU>
      <[1>oh right</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC067:0230:BU>
      <[2><O>laughs</O></[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC067:0235:XX>
      <&>quietly</&> <laughs>oh no</laughs> <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0240:BU>
      we've got a crown at home

  <WSC#DPC067:0245:BU>
      <.>it</.> it's about the <{><[><.>size</.></[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0250:BU>
      yes <?>er</?> commemorating it <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0255:AN>
      <[>commemorating it</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC067:0260:AN>
      yeah

  <WSC#DPC067:0265:BU>
      mum <{><[>and dad had</[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0270:AN>
      <[>well <.>pe</.></[></{> people bought a lot of memorabilia

  <WSC#DPC067:0275:AN>
      people still HAVE little china <{1><[1>dishes <.>and</.></[1>
      and brochures that they'd got <{2><[2>and tickets to the roller
      coaster and</[2>

  <WSC#DPC067:0280:BU>
      <[1>oh yeah</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC067:0285:BU>
      <[2>oh yes mum's got a <.>lit</.> mum had a little</[2></{2> um

  <WSC#DPC067:0290:AN>
      it was all sorts of things put up <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0295:BU>
      yeah

  <WSC#DPC067:0300:AN>
      you <.>can</.> you <{><[>could get a <.>l</.></[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0305:BU>
      <[>a blown glass</[></{> little mug <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0310:AN>
      <.>mo</.> and you could get a little model of the <.>actual</.>
      actual <{><[>exhibition</[> hall i think

  <WSC#DPC067:0315:BU>
      <[>oh yeah</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC067:0320:AN>
      it was <.>a</.> it was beautiful beautiful buildings that were
      <{><[>put up then</[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0325:XX>
      <[>where was it</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC067:0330:XX>
      was <.>it</.>

  <WSC#DPC067:0335:AN>
      it was in the grounds of rongotai college <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0340:BU>
      college

  <WSC#DPC067:0345:XX>
      oh <{><[>really</[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0350:AN>
      <[>and <.>it</.></[></{> but it went right down to the beach

  <WSC#DPC067:0355:AN>
      it went as <{1><[1><.>like</.></[1> it was HUGE

  <WSC#DPC067:0360:AN>
      it was very extensive and the <.>kupe</.> that kupe statue that
      stood <.>so</.> for so long in the railway station that <.>was</.>
      that was made for it along with many other things but <{2><[2>the
      bulk of it was destroyed</[2> in a <{3><[3>fire</[3> in about
      nineteen forty seven i <.>think</.> <quickly>i should know all
      this shouldn't i but it's</quickly> <.>in</.> in our paper
      anyway

  <WSC#DPC067:0365:BU>
      <[1>yes</[1></{1> <&>16:00</&>

  <WSC#DPC067:0370:BU>
      <[2>that's now in the show building</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC067:0375:BU>
      <[3>yes</[3></{3>

  <WSC#DPC067:0380:BU>
      but they also pulled a lot down

  <WSC#DPC067:0385:AN>
      <quickly>they <.>would've</.> <{1><[1>cos it <.>was</.> <.>only</.>
      it was only</[1> to be temporary</quickly>

  <WSC#DPC067:0390:AN>
      it was not to stay up forever so they had this wonderful solid
      looking thing which in actual fact um by today's standards would
      be considered quite solid but by their standards then was <.>very</.>
      was very um <{2><[2><?><.>temporary</.></?></[2>

  <WSC#DPC067:0395:AN>
      yeah <{3><[3>very temporary</[3>

  <WSC#DPC067:0400:BU>
      <[1>they demolished a lot</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC067:0405:BU>
      <[2>jerry built</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC067:0410:BU>
      <[3>jerry built</[3></{3> <O>laughs</O>

  <WSC#DPC067:0415:AN>
      and it was based on sort of <.>gr</.> classical greek lines and
      it had a big long pool um down in the <{1><[1>middle of the
      courtyard</[1> with a fountain

  <WSC#DPC067:0420:AN>
      people walked all <{2><[2>around it

  <WSC#DPC067:0425:AN>
      it was really quite beautiful</[2>

  <WSC#DPC067:0430:BU>
      <[1>with a fountain</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC067:0435:BU>
      <[2>i was three at the time and i can</[2></{2> remember the
      fountain

  <WSC#DPC067:0440:AN>
      can you remember <{><[>the fountain</[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0445:BU>
      <[>it's funny</[></{> i <.>can</.> <.>that's</.> that's about
      ALL i can remember

  <WSC#DPC067:0450:BU>
      <.>i</.> you know i was three <quietly><quickly>thirty seven
      thirty eight thirty nine forty</quickly></quietly> yeah three
      <{1><[1>three four</[1> and i went with <.>my</.> my uncle took
      me

  <WSC#DPC067:0455:BU>
      he was um a soldier and he was <.>on</.> on leave from camp
      <quietly>or something</quietly> and er <&>17:00</&> he took me
      and i've got a photo of him carrying me <,> <.>but</.> i can
      remember THAT and i can remember this fountain and that's all
      <{2><[2>i can remember</[2>

  <WSC#DPC067:0460:XX>
      <[1><O>laughs</O></[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC067:0465:AN>
      <[2>well the fountain</[2></{2> was quite large i think wasn't
      it <{><[><unclear>word</unclear></[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0470:BU>
      <[>and it</[></{> CHANGED COLOURS

  <WSC#DPC067:0475:AN>
      <drawls>ah</drawls>

  <WSC#DPC067:0480:BU>
      now <{><[>isn't that</[> the fountain that's up in kelburn

  <WSC#DPC067:0485:AN>
      <[><?>lovely</?></[></{>

  <WSC#DPC067:0490:AN>
      could well be <{><[>i don't know</[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0495:BU>
      <[>i have a feeling</[></{> it is

  <WSC#DPC067:0500:AN>
      it could <{><[>well be</[> <.>well</.>

  <WSC#DPC067:0505:XX>
      <[><softly>oh really</softly></[></{>

  <WSC#DPC067:0510:AN>
      it could well be <.>well</.>

  <WSC#DPC067:0515:BU>
      now the <?>kupe</?> statue is in the winter <{><[>show buildings
      isn't it</[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0520:AN>
      <[>winter show buildings mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC067:0525:AN>
      but it was only ever made of plaster

  <WSC#DPC067:0530:AN>
      <{><[>it was <.>not</.> not substantial</[>

  <WSC#DPC067:0535:BU>
      <[>yeah it's only plaster

  <WSC#DPC067:0540:BU>
      that's</[></{> why they were making all <.>the</.> the fuss
      about it in the railway station

  <WSC#DPC067:0545:BU>
      it was <{1><[1>just so EASY</[1> to graffiti and chip away and
      carve your <,> initials in cos it was plaster but it was painted
      as though it was <{2><[2>bronze so everybody thought that it wa
      a <laughs>bronze</laughs></[2> <,> statue <?>for</?> kupe

  <WSC#DPC067:0550:AN>
      <[1><?>cos it get</?> chipped</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC067:0555:AN>
      <[2><.>bra</.> <.>bro</.> bronze or brass mm <unclear>word</unclear>
      bronze</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC067:0560:XX>
      <O>laughs</O>

  <WSC#DPC067:0565:AN>
      <,> but <.>that</.> it actually worked out quite well

  <WSC#DPC067:0570:AN>
      i mean it's <.>a</.> in some ways <.>it's</.> <,> it's easier
      doing a group interview than to do a single one <,> because <.>you</.>
      you know if a person doesn't feel as if they can talk for very
      long <.>there's</.> there's always someone next

  <WSC#DPC067:0575:AN>
      of course there are difficulties as well though <&>18:00</&>
      because you have people talking on top of each other <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0580:BU>
      right yeah

  <WSC#DPC067:0585:AN>
      <.>and</.> <.>and</.> and the critical thing with <.>a</.> with
      an oral history tape is that you record who the person is that's
      talking so we had <.>this</.> we had this system that didn't
      work where i said to them i was the sort of taker of notes <.>and</.>
      and i said to them look just say who you are before you speak
      but of course they didn't

  <WSC#DPC067:0590:AN>
      they'd remember something and they'd <O>voc</O> quickly <O>voc</O>
      <{1><[1>come in with it and not say</[1> who were and so
      afterwards i'd be saying to people <{2><[2>what was the name</[2>
      of the woman in the yellow <laughs>cardigan</laughs> but in the
      end we actually managed to get it <,> um and record er who had
      said what and we actually put it into a typewritten form as well
      and gave each <.>per</.> each person who'd been there a copy of
      <quietly>this and they could <{3><[3>keep it</quietly></[3>

  <WSC#DPC067:0595:BU>
      <[1>oh pop it in yes</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC067:0600:BU>
      <[2>who are you</[2></{2> <O>laughs</O>

  <WSC#DPC067:0605:BU>
      <[3>have you</[3></{3> still got copies of that <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0610:AN>
      oh yes we've still got copies of it <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0615:BU>
      I'D like a copy of that

  <WSC#DPC067:0620:AN>
      would you?

  <WSC#DPC067:0625:BU>
      yes

  <WSC#DPC067:0630:AN>
      it was very <.>much</.> i mean it was <.>not</.> it was very
      much a SOCIAL history you know just people's memories but <.>that's</.>
      <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0635:BU>
      of where the stores were and going down to the <.>local</.>
      <latch>

  <WSC#DPC067:0640:AN>
      and things like being on the roller coaster and the lady in
      front's false teeth flying out <O>all laugh</O>

  <WSC#DPC067:0645:AN>
      <laughs>and someone else who went i think it <&>19:00</&> <.>was</.></laughs>
      cos there was a roller coaster there

  <WSC#DPC067:0650:AN>
      you see pictures of it

  <WSC#DPC067:0655:AN>
      <?>it</?> was a real genuine <,> <{><[>roller coaster</[> wasn't
      it

  <WSC#DPC067:0660:AN>
      there was never <.>any</.> any before <&>someone coughs</&> <&>B
      answers <.>telephone</.> not transcribed</&>

  <WSC#DPC067:0665:BU>
      <[>oh yes yes</[></{> <&>telephone rings loudly</&>

  <WSC#DPC067:0670:AN>
      margaret's decided she's going to do kites <,>

  <WSC#DPC067:0675:BU>
      right

  <WSC#DPC067:0680:AN>
      she just sort of decided
