      what else did you do in the weekend

  <WSC#DPC309:0010:KW>
      anything exciting

  <WSC#DPC309:0015:MH>
      well <.>for</.>

  <WSC#DPC309:0020:MH>
      during the christmas holidays i came back from christchurch
      HOping to paint the house the outside <{1><[1>of</[1> the house
      but the weather was poor er lot of mist and fog up here

  <WSC#DPC309:0025:MH>
      i never got round to doing that

  <WSC#DPC309:0030:MH>
      but <drawls>i</drawls> have been trying to get the bathroom
      finished

  <WSC#DPC309:0035:MH>
      that's been undone half done <O>inhales</O> for a couple of
      years now

  <WSC#DPC309:0040:MH>
      so while the family were out of it <O>tut</O> i had plenty of
      space i could leave wet things lying <{2><[2>around

  <WSC#DPC309:0045:MH>
      didn't</[2> have to worry about wet paint

  <WSC#DPC309:0050:MH>
      the biggest problem as you know was trying to get the colour
      right <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0055:KW>
      <[1>mm</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0060:KW>
      <[2><O>laughs</O></[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0065:KW>
      yes <?>yeah</?> <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0070:MH>
      because when you get the test pots with the <{1><[1>paint

  <WSC#DPC309:0075:MH>
      they're acrylic they give a dull finish</[1> but in the bathroom
      we wanted a shiny <{2><[2>finish

  <WSC#DPC309:0080:MH>
      and of course once</[2> the reflection and the high gloss enamel
      was on the wall it was nowhere near what we wanted

  <WSC#DPC309:0085:MH>
      but rather than er not use the paint um

  <WSC#DPC309:0090:MH>
      it was a colour that we <&>10:00</&> both liked so we decided
      that i'd paint the laundry

  <WSC#DPC309:0095:MH>
      so i did that downstairs

  <WSC#DPC309:0100:MH>
      and at the moment er i've nearly finished doing the hall way
      upstairs

  <WSC#DPC309:0105:MH>
      so it's just about a re do of the house

  <WSC#DPC309:0110:MH>
      having i must say it's one thing that we're very pleased about
      and i don't say too much to <?>our</?> other people but we've
      finished paying OFF the house

  <WSC#DPC309:0115:MH>
      so it just gives us that mortgage money that WAS going elsewhere
      to do some um <O>tut</O> some maintenance that was needing doing
      around the place

  <WSC#DPC309:0120:MH>
      so that with a bit of gardening <{3><[3>er</[3>

  <WSC#DPC309:0125:KW>
      <[1>mm mm mm <?>mm</?></[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0130:KW>
      <[2>mm mm</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0135:KW>
      <[3><.>di</.></[3></{3> did i tell you about my painting
      experience <,,> <{><[>in the <.>h</.> in the holidays</[>

  <WSC#DPC309:0140:MH>
      <[><.>y</.> <.>y</.> you</[></{> started to

  <WSC#DPC309:0145:KW>
      well <.>w</.> yeah um it's interesting <,>

  <WSC#DPC309:0150:KW>
      we decided to do do the four remaining bedrooms and you know
      that special ceiling <?>one that i</?> <{1><[1>have got</[1> and
      i did the ceilings <O>voc</O> and the two two of the bedrooms
      had quite good wallpaper so <?>we</?> left the left the
      wallpaper

  <WSC#DPC309:0155:KW>
      i just did the windows and the surrounds and the ceiling and <.>th</.>
      <?>it's</?> come up they've come up <&>11:00</&> well

  <WSC#DPC309:0160:KW>
      and the other two rooms um <O>clears throat</O> had ceiling and
      <.>p</.> painted wallpaper originally and the paint <{2><[2>was</[2>
      in good condition

  <WSC#DPC309:0165:KW>
      <{3><[3>the paper was in good condition</[3>

  <WSC#DPC309:0170:KW>
      so we thought we'd just paint those er walls again

  <WSC#DPC309:0175:KW>
      so i did the ceilings er <?>with a <.>nu</.></?> with a <?>rust
      up <{4><[4>and <.>th</.></?></[4> with a special roller and that
      came up that came up really well and did all the windows <{5><[5><?>surround</?></[5>

  <WSC#DPC309:0180:MH>
      <[1>oh yes</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0185:MH>
      <[2><?>mm</?></[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0190:MH>
      <[3>mm <O>sniffs</O></[3></{3>

  <WSC#DPC309:0195:MH>
      <[4>yes</[4></{4>

  <WSC#DPC309:0200:MH>
      <[5>is</[5></{5> this just paint for the ceiling was it <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0205:KW>
      yeah just ceiling paint

  <WSC#DPC309:0210:KW>
      <{1><[1>yeah</[1> just painted it up <O>tut</O> and did the
      windows in the the normal way

  <WSC#DPC309:0215:KW>
      and then i painted the walls

  <WSC#DPC309:0220:KW>
      so i put on two coats <.>s</.> <.>s</.>

  <WSC#DPC309:0225:KW>
      nice paint

  <WSC#DPC309:0230:KW>
      taubmans paint

  <WSC#DPC309:0235:KW>
      put it <.>o</.> put it on the walls <O>voc</O> <,>

  <WSC#DPC309:0240:KW>
      looked very smart you know with all the cutting in round and i
      made a <.>s</.> particularly good <{2><[2>job of cutting in yeah

  <WSC#DPC309:0245:KW>
      cutting it in really</[2> well and i thought oh <?>i was</?>

  <WSC#DPC309:0250:KW>
      stood back and i was really proud of the job and two days later
      it looked really good

  <WSC#DPC309:0255:KW>
      but three days <{3><[3>later</[3> <,> <.>w</.> <.>we</.> pat
      said to me kevin come and have a look at the the paint on the
      wall

  <WSC#DPC309:0260:KW>
      so i went in and it all had this crazy cracked pattern all
      across the <.>w</.> all the walls in these in these <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0265:MH>
      <[1>right</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0270:MH>
      <[2>that's hard too isn't it

  <WSC#DPC309:0275:MH>
      oh</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0280:MH>
      <[3><O>exhales</O></[3></{3>

  <WSC#DPC309:0285:MH>
      had you <{><[>put the paint</[> on too thickly or er

  <WSC#DPC309:0290:KW>
      <[>two rooms</[></{> <&>12:00</&>

  <WSC#DPC309:0295:KW>
      well i i've been painting houses and rooms for <{1><[1>years
      malcolm</[1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0300:KW>
      i've never ever experienced this <O>clears throat</O>

  <WSC#DPC309:0305:KW>
      so i thought what can it be <O>tut</O>

  <WSC#DPC309:0310:KW>
      so i didn't know what to do and i thought well maybe whatever
      the problem was might have been cured in by putting <.>i</.>
      those things

  <WSC#DPC309:0315:KW>
      so i thought well i'll put another couple of coats of paint on

  <WSC#DPC309:0320:KW>
      <{2><[2>so i rolled rolled another couple of coats of paint on</[2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0325:MH>
      <[1><?>yeah i know</?></[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0330:MH>
      <[2><O>laughs</O>

  <WSC#DPC309:0335:MH>
      oh</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0340:MH>
      oh gosh <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0345:KW>
      looked really good

  <WSC#DPC309:0350:KW>
      i thought oh fine

  <WSC#DPC309:0355:KW>
      two days later it was still looking good and i thought oh gosh
      it's all fixed

  <WSC#DPC309:0360:KW>
      <{><[><laughs>no such luck

  <WSC#DPC309:0365:KW>
      within four days</laughs></[> <,> THESE two coats had cracked

  <WSC#DPC309:0370:MH>
      <[><O>laughs</O></[></{>

  <WSC#DPC309:0375:MH>
      had the do <.>y</.> had it cracked in the same place <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0380:KW>
      no <latch> the original <.>or</.> <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0385:KW>
      no <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0390:MH>
      further cracking <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0395:KW>
      further cracking <,>

  <WSC#DPC309:0400:KW>
      so i thought ah <,> strange

  <WSC#DPC309:0405:KW>
      <laughs>what am i</laughs> going to do now

  <WSC#DPC309:0410:KW>
      so i thought well <.>i</.> what i'll do is i'll fill all those
      cracks

  <WSC#DPC309:0415:KW>
      so i <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0420:MH>
      yes <{><[><O>clears throat</O></[>

  <WSC#DPC309:0425:KW>
      <[>i plastered with a very thin</[></{> layer of plaster and
      sanded <{1><[1>it all off and</[1> made <.>th</.> all the walls
      nice and smooth again <{2><[2><O>laughs</O> and</[2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0430:KW>
      i thought i'll give it another two coats <{3><[3><?>of paint</?></[3>

  <WSC#DPC309:0435:MH>
      <[1><O>tut</O></[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0440:MH>
      <[2><softly>oh <?>great</?></softly></[2></{2> <&>13:00</&>

  <WSC#DPC309:0445:MH>
      <[3>you'd</[3></{3> be getting a bit frustrated by this <{><[>time
      wouldn't you <O>laughs</O></[>

  <WSC#DPC309:0450:KW>
      <[><O>tut</O> i was getting a bit frustrated yes

  <WSC#DPC309:0455:KW>
      sending pat back to get more cans of paint</[></{> <O>inhales</O>

  <WSC#DPC309:0460:KW>
      so then i painted it the the <.>w</.> walls and we thought oh
      great

  <WSC#DPC309:0465:KW>
      you know after three days it was still fine <,>

  <WSC#DPC309:0470:KW>
      <{1><[1><laughs>what i</[1> didn't bank on was five days later
      <O>voc</O> all cracked again</laughs>

  <WSC#DPC309:0475:KW>
      so i thought what are we going to do

  <WSC#DPC309:0480:KW>
      well really the only thing left to do <.>w</.> <.>w</.> from <.>ours</.>
      our point of view was to take everything off the wall and then
      strip the whole walls and start from the <.>th</.> the <{2><[2>word
      go</[2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0485:MH>
      <[1><O>laughs</O></[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0490:MH>
      <[2>did you</[2></{2> did you think of getting er one of the
      taubmans people <{><[>in to have a look at it</[>

  <WSC#DPC309:0495:KW>
      <[>yes yeah <?>that's what</?> i was going to say</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC309:0500:KW>
      well so <.>w</.> what we decided to do was to get taubmans <{1><[1>the
      paint</[1> people out and the er the <.>p</.> one of the paint
      experts <laughs>came out</laughs>

  <WSC#DPC309:0505:KW>
      he said oh

  <WSC#DPC309:0510:KW>
      said never seen this before in my life

  <WSC#DPC309:0515:KW>
      don't know what's caused this

  <WSC#DPC309:0520:KW>
      mm he said very interesting and we said very interesting too

  <WSC#DPC309:0525:KW>
      and he said well you know <&>14:00</&> people pay a lot of money
      for that sort of effect <{2><[2><O>laughs</O>

  <WSC#DPC309:0530:KW>
      <laughs>i said yes well</[2> i've created this effect with <.>a</.>
      for nothing</laughs>

  <WSC#DPC309:0535:KW>
      but i said that's not the problem i don't really like this
      effect

  <WSC#DPC309:0540:KW>
      so he <.>s</.> <.>he</.> he said well let's try a new <.>sa</.>
      a sample of the paint

  <WSC#DPC309:0545:KW>
      so we <.>t</.> tore off a <.>pie</.> piece of the <{3><[3><unclear>word</unclear>
      right down to the paper</[3>

  <WSC#DPC309:0550:MH>
      <[1><O>sniffs</O></[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0555:MH>
      <[2><laughs>you'd be well aware of that wouldn't you

  <WSC#DPC309:0560:MH>
      so <.>wh</.> <unclear>word</unclear></laughs></[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0565:MH>
      <[3>and

  <WSC#DPC309:0570:MH>
      once you had it all back</[3></{3> onto paper <.>i</.> er
      <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0575:KW>
      yeah and we we lifted it back and tore a piece off so he could
      take away the cracking for sampling and he took away the <?>the</?>
      can of paint

  <WSC#DPC309:0580:KW>
      and i had a ring back from taubmans later on

  <WSC#DPC309:0585:KW>
      they still <.>do</.> are not sure

  <WSC#DPC309:0590:KW>
      all they can think of is there's too much paint on there BUT <O>tut</O>
      um i doubt that because <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0595:MH>
      it's <.>d</.> you'd started straight over paper hadn't you

  <WSC#DPC309:0600:KW>
      no over PAINT

  <WSC#DPC309:0605:KW>
      but it was very thin paint <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0610:MH>
      yeah <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0615:KW>
      you could see the paper through the <{><[>paint

  <WSC#DPC309:0620:KW>
      so</[> i think there's something else amiss somewhere with the
      paint

  <WSC#DPC309:0625:KW>
      i'm certain it's a paint problem <O>tut</O>

  <WSC#DPC309:0630:MH>
      <[>yes yes</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC309:0635:MH>
      and they're working on it at the moment <&>15:00</&>

  <WSC#DPC309:0640:KW>
      no they're making a disclaimer about the paint

  <WSC#DPC309:0645:MH>
      oh that's a bit <{><[>er a bit</[> bit naughty

  <WSC#DPC309:0650:KW>
      <[>yeah yeah</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC309:0655:KW>
      yeah but <{1><[1>never mind</[1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0660:KW>
      i i it's it's what we'll have to do is <O>voc</O> <O>tut</O> now
      start from scratch by taking all that off the wall <{2><[2><O>laughs</O>
      <laughs>which is going to be a you know big job</laughs></[2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0665:MH>
      <[1><?>aren't</?> they</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0670:MH>
      <[2>mm <drawls>oh</drawls>

  <WSC#DPC309:0675:MH>
      your next</[2></{2> holiday job

  <WSC#DPC309:0680:KW>
      yeah <{1><[1>and then i'll i'll</[1> wallpaper <{2><[2>it</[2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0685:KW>
      i won't paint

  <WSC#DPC309:0690:KW>
      i'll just <{3><[3>wallpaper it <?>mm</?></[3>

  <WSC#DPC309:0695:MH>
      <[1><?>oh well</?></[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0700:MH>
      <[2><O>sniffs</O></[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0705:MH>
      <[3>oh right

  <WSC#DPC309:0710:MH>
      is</[3></{3> is there any way you can claim on er a job like
      that from insurance

  <WSC#DPC309:0715:MH>
      is it worth putting in

  <WSC#DPC309:0720:MH>
      <{><[>it's just something</[>

  <WSC#DPC309:0725:KW>
      <[><O>tut</O> <O>exhales</O></[></{> just it's more nuisance
      value really

  <WSC#DPC309:0730:KW>
      i mean <{><[>i've</[> done the ceiling

  <WSC#DPC309:0735:KW>
      i've done the windows and really it's just a matter of stripping
      the walls and and <?>tidying them up</?> <unclear>word</unclear>
      <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0740:MH>
      <[>yes</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC309:0745:MH>
      it's a it's a nuisance job <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0750:KW>
      mm <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0755:MH>
      but when you've <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0760:KW>
      mm <latch> repapered <{><[>you'll be satisfied that it's done</[>

  <WSC#DPC309:0765:KW>
      <[>mm mm</[></{> mm mm

  <WSC#DPC309:0770:MH>
      yes these things happen don't they

  <WSC#DPC309:0775:MH>
      as i was saying the trying to get paint colours right <{1><[1>and</[1>
      something like this <{2><[2>that</[2> time and effort that you
      can ill afford <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:0780:KW>
      <[1>mm</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0785:KW>
      <[2><O>voc</O> mm</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0790:KW>
      mm <latch> because you'll be doing other things um

  <WSC#DPC309:0795:MH>
      <{1><[1><O>tut</O> yes</[1> and doing four rooms

  <WSC#DPC309:0800:MH>
      did all <&>16:00</&> four rooms go like this <{2><[2>or just a
      couple</[2> of them

  <WSC#DPC309:0805:KW>
      <[1><unclear>word</unclear></[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC309:0810:KW>
      <[2>no no no</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPC309:0815:KW>
      <O>sniffs</O>

  <WSC#DPC309:0820:KW>
      just the two two rooms our bedroom and another little bedroom

  <WSC#DPC309:0825:KW>

      but i found that to go over a colour or over or over paper i've
      got to put an undercoat and i'm finding that i've got to put two
      top coats on

  <WSC#DPC309:0875:MH>

  <WSC#DPC309:1015:KW>
      <[2><.>i</.></[2></{2> i think for principals' jobs because <?>the</?>
      the length of time that's involved see

  <WSC#DPC309:1020:KW>
      it can be up to an hour and a half to a

  <WSC#DPC309:1025:KW>
      in fact the <&>name of place</&> for the <&>name of school</&>
      job the the applicants who have been <.>s</.> who have been
      shortlisted will be there for about two hours each

  <WSC#DPC309:1030:MH>
      yes <latch> <&>18:00</&>

  <WSC#DPC309:1035:KW>
      they'll be involved with presentation to staff grouping and part
      of the board

  <WSC#DPC309:1040:MH>
      is this um <{1><[1>something</[1> that's crept into <{2><[2>er</[2>

  <WSC#DPC309:1045:KW>
      <[1>for half an hour</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPC309:1050:KW>
      <[2>mm</[2></{2> mm mm oh for top for big big school jobs
      <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:1055:MH>
      yes

  <WSC#DPC309:1060:KW>

      quarter of an hour

  <WSC#DPC309:1065:KW>
      they've got a presentation for about a half an hour

  <WSC#DPC309:1070:KW>
      and then they'll have an interview a formal interview <{><[>for</[>
      about an hour

  <WSC#DPC309:1075:MH>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC309:1080:MH>
      could we go back to this um presentation

  <WSC#DPC309:1085:MH>
      i'm interested to hear about <{1><[1>this</[1>

  <WSC#DPC309:1090:MH>
      does this involve um <O>tut</O> a prewarned <{2><[2>presentation</[2>
      the school get a group of staff there seniors <{3><[3>um <.>sk</.></[3>
      <?>skylies</?> <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:1095:KW>

  <WSC#DPC309:1155:MH>
      <[><O>tut</O> and</[></{> from that you get <{><[>a fair idea of</[>
      the basis of that um <latch>

  <WSC#DPC309:1160:KW>
      <[>yeah mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DPC309:1165:KW>
      mm <latch> of that person's thinking <{><[>and</[> er

  <WSC#DPC309:1170:KW>
