  <WSC#DPF002:0005:AC>
      and um oh perhaps if you tell me about your home schooling

  <WSC#DPF002:0010:AC>
      now i gather your children are home schooled

  <WSC#DPF002:0015:AC>
      <{><[>is that right yes</[>

  <WSC#DPF002:0020:BP>
      <[>yes that's right</[></{>

  <WSC#DPF002:0025:BP>
      yes <.>well</.> well we've got five <.>children</.> <latch>

  <WSC#DPF002:0030:AC>
      yes <latch>

  <WSC#DPF002:0035:BP>
      and um <.>w</.> the <.>o</.> um the oldest is fourteen and the
      youngest is nearly <.>four</.> be four next month

  <WSC#DPF002:0040:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0045:BP>
      <O>tut</O> yeah they've um that's why i was bit late getting to
      the phone because they've been up since about six oclock doing
      all the things that they do <{><[>and um today's a holiday</[>

  <WSC#DPF002:0050:AC>
      <[><quietly>mm</quietly> what sort of things</[></{>

  <WSC#DPF002:0055:AC>
      yes today's a holiday

  <WSC#DPF002:0060:AC>
      <{><[>what sort of <laughs>things do they do</laughs></[>

  <WSC#DPF002:0065:BP>
      <[><O>laughs</O>

  <WSC#DPF002:0070:BP>
      well</[></{> um one of my sons birthday today so <{1><[1>um</[1>
      he got up really early and he was was sitting in the sitting
      room and the other one got up um shona got up at er and made him
      breakfast

  <WSC#DPF002:0075:BP>
      she made scrambled eggs and toast and a cup of cocoa for him and
      <{2><[2>um</[2>

  <WSC#DPF002:0080:AC>
      <[1>mm</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPF002:0085:AC>
      <[2>oh</[2></{2> that's nice

  <WSC#DPF002:0090:BP>
      yeah and then um <O>tut</O> the other one got up and um i bought
      some material that needs <&>2:00</&> preshrinking so he er <O>tut</O>
      i want to sew that up today so he <.>put</.> washed that for me
      and they've been playing um making lego constructions in the
      lounge room <O>tut</O>

  <WSC#DPF002:0095:BP>
      then they brought <&>pronounced as bought</&> me a cup of tea in
      bed and um i've been reading <.>the</.> reading stories <,> um
      in bed <{><[>my holidays</[> so i <.>like</.> that's what i like
      to do something completely different and which i don't get a
      chance to read much

  <WSC#DPF002:0100:AC>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DPF002:0105:AC>
      no you wouldn't <{><[>no</[>

  <WSC#DPF002:0110:BP>
      <[>and um</[></{> <O>tut</O> yeah and afterwards sort <.>of</.>
      we've um done the dishes and um we'll probably have lunch soon
      um have a birthday lunch and um then <.>we'll</.> i don't know
      what we'll do after <laughs>that</laughs> <{><[><O>laughs</O></[>

  <WSC#DPF002:0115:AC>
      <[><O>laughs</O></[></{> and what made you decide to home school
      your children

  <WSC#DPF002:0120:BP>
      oh well um <O>tut</O> i've always been um felt very strongly
      about being involved with their education

  <WSC#DPF002:0125:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0130:BP>
      and even um i <.>n</.> i was never happy with what kindergarten
      offered um

  <WSC#DPF002:0135:BP>
      when my first one went to kindergarten i didn't like it at all
      was <&>3:00</&> very upset about it and um then er we went to
      live in samoa for um <O>tut</O> well it ended up nearly two
      years and even the education over <.>there</.> system over there
      i didn't like that at all

  <WSC#DPF002:0140:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0145:BP>
      didn't like being separated from the children

  <WSC#DPF002:0150:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0155:BP>
      and i didn't like other people <,,> having <?><.>te</.></?>
      telling my children things that i wanted to tell them

  <WSC#DPF002:0160:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0165:BP>
      and um yeah it was a real um tearing apart of my heart and i
      thought oh well this is the way life is <unclear>word</unclear>

  <WSC#DPF002:0170:BP>
      thousands of children go to school i mean millions <{><[>you
      know</[>

  <WSC#DPF002:0175:BP>
      this is what normal people do but I didn't like it and then er
      we came back to new zealand and er life went on and my children
      actually didn't like um kindergarten either um

  <WSC#DPF002:0180:BP>
      shona used to sit in the teacher's office and tidy up her books
      and desk and things and the other one used to <.>f</.> um scream
      all the way there and <,> and um <O>tut</O> cry when he came
      home so things like that

  <WSC#DPF002:0185:BP>
      <.>they</.> <&>4:00</&> they weren't very happy either <.>so</.>

  <WSC#DPF002:0190:AC>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DPF002:0195:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0200:BP>
      then they went to school and sort of the same thing happened

  <WSC#DPF002:0205:BP>
      they used to cry going to school <.>and</.> and i used to go
      down there and take part as a mother and er teachers used to say
      oh you know why don't you stay home <laughs>sort of thing</laughs>

  <WSC#DPF002:0210:AC>
      oh really?

  <WSC#DPF002:0215:BP>
      yeah so um <O>tut</O> and then er <.>l</.> i heard about <.>diff</.>
      people having different alternatives about their education and
      private tutors and private schools and country schools <.>and</.>
      <,> and i thought oh i'll never be able to have anything like
      that and then um <O>tut</O> a friend of mine took her children
      to a um <O>tut</O> private school

  <WSC#DPF002:0220:AC>
      <quietly>mm</quietly> <latch>

  <WSC#DPF002:0225:BP>
      and i said how er fortunate she was because you know they were
      really um financially adequate to do that

  <WSC#DPF002:0230:AC>
      mm <latch>

  <WSC#DPF002:0235:BP>
      and i said <.>oh</.> she said to me oh well something will turn
      up for you that will suit you and so i really sort of held that
      in my heart and at the <.>end</.> during ninety eighty eight
      caroline peters um home schooling in <&>5:00</&> wellington she
      shifted to wellington

  <WSC#DPF002:0240:BP>
      there was a photograph of her in the paper with her children

  <WSC#DPF002:0245:BP>
      it was a contact newspaper

  <WSC#DPF002:0250:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0255:BP>
      and she had five kiddies <.>and</.> sitting there telling us
      about home schooling and <.>sh</.> and um <O>tut</O> i thought
      oh this is interesting

  <WSC#DPF002:0260:BP>
      <{><[>never heard</[> about this before

  <WSC#DPF002:0265:AC>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DPF002:0270:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0275:BP>
      and um i just went for <.>a</.> about a year i sat on that and
      my husband said oh no

  <WSC#DPF002:0280:BP>
      you know i had been sick quite a lot <O>tut</O> different <?>physical</?>
      sicknesses and we had just had our last baby

  <WSC#DPF002:0285:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0290:BP>
      and um <,,> he said oh you know <.>you</.> you can't do it

  <WSC#DPF002:0295:BP>
      you don't know anything about science or maths or um which is
      true and um i'd just had a baby and patience and all the rest of
      it and so um <O>tut</O> yeah we <.>just</.> we prayed about it

  <WSC#DPF002:0300:BP>
      we <.>were</.> being christians that's what we do and we prayed
      about it and um for a year and then at the end of ninety eighty
      eight everything just <&>6:00</&> seemed to snowball and um we
      just went from there

  <WSC#DPF002:0305:BP>
      we wrote a letter to the education department and <,> never
      looked back

  <WSC#DPF002:0310:AC>
      mm <{><[>so do they do</[> correspondence lessons

  <WSC#DPF002:0315:BP>
      <[><?>that was <.>towards</.></?></[></{>

  <WSC#DPF002:0320:BP>
      no um <O>tut</O> <O>clears throat</O> that was another thing we
      thought that cos we're <,> <O>tut</O> not that well off <{><[>i
      <.>thought</.></[> we thought how on <.>earth</.> <.>we</.> we
      didn't have a television um

  <WSC#DPF002:0325:BP>
      <.>we</.> you know we <.>didn't</.> can't afford to buy books

  <WSC#DPF002:0330:BP>
      we always went to the library

  <WSC#DPF002:0335:AC>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DPF002:0340:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0345:BP>
      and we thought oh how on earth are we gonna do this and we
      thought we have to have all the modern technology and that and
      caroline said to me you can teach <,> with the newspaper

  <WSC#DPF002:0350:AC>
      yeah

  <WSC#DPF002:0355:BP>
      and she showed me how to actually do <laughs>that</laughs>

  <WSC#DPF002:0360:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0365:BP>
      and i made my own little um storybooks and things

  <WSC#DPF002:0370:AC>
      mhm

  <WSC#DPF002:0375:BP>
      and um <O>tut</O> i have two friends who are <.>in</.> teaching
      in regular schools and they gave me a loan of books

  <WSC#DPF002:0380:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0385:BP>
      and we just went from there

  <WSC#DPF002:0390:BP>
      i've got so much stuff now

  <WSC#DPF002:0395:BP>
      i've got what i call my freezer full of ideas

  <WSC#DPF002:0400:BP>
      i've <.>got</.> i've <{><[>got <.>so</.></[> so i've just made
      my own equipment and my own um <O>tut</O> <&>7:00</&> bought
      books along the years and i've actually just <.>bought</.> the
      first brand new book that i bought was last year

  <WSC#DPF002:0405:BP>
      it was a form four maths book

  <WSC#DPF002:0410:AC>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DPF002:0415:AC>
      mhm

  <WSC#DPF002:0420:BP>
      whereas all the other books i've had are a second hand or um
      borrowed from other home schoolers <.>or</.>

  <WSC#DPF002:0425:AC>
      mm so you're actually um even home schooling your secondary
      school boy

  <WSC#DPF002:0430:BP>
      yes <{1><[1>mm</[1>

  <WSC#DPF002:0435:BP>
      <.>that's</.> it's easier as they get on because the idea is to
      um <,> make them <.>in</.> you know train them to be independent
      <{2><[2>and to</[2> be resourceful themselves

  <WSC#DPF002:0440:AC>
      <[1>mm</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPF002:0445:AC>
      <[2>yes</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPF002:0450:AC>
      yes

  <WSC#DPF002:0455:BP>
      and to <.>h</.> so they all actually work on their own

  <WSC#DPF002:0460:BP>
      I just make their plan <{><[>i <.>h</.></[> and i even <.>i</.>
      include THEM in the planning

  <WSC#DPF002:0465:AC>
      <[>mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DPF002:0470:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0475:BP>
      um i ask them what things they want to study and how we go about
      it and so on and then um we're supposed to use the curriculum
      education department curriculum as a guide which i do

  <WSC#DPF002:0480:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0485:BP>
      and um <,,> and so we um we just go from there <&>8:00</&>

  <WSC#DPF002:0490:BP>
      i'm still not so hot on science <.>and</.> still not my
      favourite subject but we <.>get</.> we do quite a lot of biology
      and um <O>tut</O> natural science rather than the chemistry and
      the physics <unclear>word</unclear>

  <WSC#DPF002:0495:BP>
      i guess that's where my you know weakness is

  <WSC#DPF002:0500:AC>
      mm <latch>

  <WSC#DPF002:0505:BP>
      but <.>ma</.> i don't know what will happen next year um

  <WSC#DPF002:0510:BP>
      we just take one year at a time

  <WSC#DPF002:0515:AC>
      yes <.>i</.> i <.>just</.> i'm full of admiration for what
      you're doing but it seems to me you're doing it such a hard way

  <WSC#DPF002:0520:AC>
      i <laughs>mean <{1><[1><?>the correspondence</?></laughs></[1>
      school at least would give you the prescriptions that you should
      be following and it sets everything out so that they're very
      easy <.>to</.> to follow <{2><[2><O>voc</O></[2>

  <WSC#DPF002:0525:BP>
      <[1>well it IS</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPF002:0530:BP>
      <[2>yeah well</[2></{2> the um <O>tut</O> most of the stuff
      that's available is expensive

  <WSC#DPF002:0535:BP>
      we just haven't got the money to <{><[>pay <unclear>word</unclear></[>

  <WSC#DPF002:0540:AC>
      <[>you mean you have to</[></{> PAY for the correspondence <{><[>school</[>

  <WSC#DPF002:0545:BP>
      <[>yes</[></{>

  <WSC#DPF002:0550:AC>
      do you <latch>

  <WSC#DPF002:0555:BP>
      um <.>they</.> <.>corre</.> education department were very angry
      when <.>i</.> i first started home schooling um

  <WSC#DPF002:0560:BP>
      it was about five or six years <.>o</.> old by that stage within
      new zealand

  <WSC#DPF002:0565:AC>
      mm <latch>

  <WSC#DPF002:0570:BP>
      <.>pr</.> probably <.>be</.> well lots of others but <&>9:00</&>
      they weren't sort of <,> very public

  <WSC#DPF002:0575:AC>
      mm <latch>

  <WSC#DPF002:0580:BP>
      and um <.>tha</.> the education department were very angry with
      us and <{1><[1><.>the</.> people in auckland</[1> um who er have
      been <?>lobbying</?> the government side of it and there's a lot
      of home schoolers are still very angry with the education
      <unclear>word</unclear> <{2><[2>the government</[2> and all that
      but now they um <O>tut</O> when the last government was elected
      they um is it lockwood smith <{3><[3><unclear>word</unclear></[3>
      he um is giving an allowance to the parents of children who are
      being home schooled and <.>that</.> for us it comes out to about
      two thousand three hundred dollars a year

  <WSC#DPF002:0585:AC>
      <[1>yes <?>i know about that</?> mm</[1></{1>

  <WSC#DPF002:0590:AC>
      <[2>mm</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPF002:0595:AC>
      <[3>yes</[3></{3>

  <WSC#DPF002:0600:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0605:BP>
      and that's given purely to me

  <WSC#DPF002:0610:BP>
      it's called an allowance and i can do whatever i like <{><[>with
      it</[> and um so <.>we've</.> but the um correspondence school
      is um very expensive

  <WSC#DPF002:0615:BP>
      for a secondary student form three

  <WSC#DPF002:0620:AC>
      <[>mm mm</[></{>

  <WSC#DPF002:0625:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0630:BP>
      for one subject a year it's seventeen hundred dollars

  <WSC#DPF002:0635:AC>
      is it

  <WSC#DPF002:0640:BP>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0645:AC>
      good gracious <latch>

  <WSC#DPF002:0650:BP>
      so they made it inaccessible for us

  <WSC#DPF002:0655:AC>
      yes? <&>10:00</&>

  <WSC#DPF002:0660:BP>
      but there's some home schoolers who do use it don't pay for it
      but they get it through medical or <{><[>psychological services</[>

  <WSC#DPF002:0665:AC>
      <[>right yes</[></{> because I used to work there and i KNOW
      some people um did get home schooling but um i don't know what
      the rules are and maybe yes i <{><[>didn't <?>realise this</?></[>

  <WSC#DPF002:0670:BP>
      <[>well <.>apparently</.></[></{> the ones that <.>u</.> use it
      for medical reasons um the children aren't capable of keeping up
      to <.>the</.> the deadline or <.>the</.> the pressure of um
      getting assignments done

  <WSC#DPF002:0675:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0680:BP>
      they er children that need to have lots of space and <.>i</.>
      <.>without</.> well I <.>n</.> <.>i</.> I'M doing correspondence
      typing for myself which costs eighty five dollars a year

  <WSC#DPF002:0685:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0690:BP>
      and <.>i</.> i <unclear>word</unclear> that's got a two week
      deadline on each thing which i don't keep

  <WSC#DPF002:0695:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0700:BP>
      but um <O>tut</O> <.>the</.> <.>the</.> like i was saying <.>the</.>
      the people who um who DO use correspondence school find that
      that THAT pressure of meeting a deadline is incredible um <,,>
      um <{1><[1>obstacle</[1> in their children's education so they
      er er they give it away and they do their <{2><[2>own</[2>
      programme

  <WSC#DPF002:0705:AC>
      <[1>yes</[1></{1> <&>11:00</&>

  <WSC#DPF002:0710:AC>
      <[2>mm</[2></{2>

  <WSC#DPF002:0715:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0720:BP>
      so much flexibility <.>and</.> and <.>open</.> openness that we
      can have

  <WSC#DPF002:0725:AC>
      mm

  <WSC#DPF002:0730:BP>
      but <.>a</.> there's also lots of christian programmes that are
      available too which have their own um flaws like there's the ace
      which is <{1><[1>called</[1> um accelerated christian education
      <unclear>word</unclear> that uses the um <O>tut</O> multiple <.>ans</.>
      <.>choice</.> answer <{2><[2>way</[2>
