  <WSC#MUS004:0005:ST>
      okay page twenty seven peter have you got <?>that</?> page <,,>
      great <,>

  <WSC#MUS004:0010:ST>
      basically it's child abuse

  <WSC#MUS004:0015:ST>
      two years ago the law changed

  <WSC#MUS004:0020:ST>
      remember we were talking about the children and young persons
      and their families act because remember when there used to be
      problems with children they'd usually just be taken out of their
      families and put in the welfare homes

  <WSC#MUS004:0025:ST>
      we discussed all this okay

  <WSC#MUS004:0030:ST>
      well the children young persons and their families ACT tries to
      keep them in families so everything changed the whole structure
      of social welfare etcetera and what used to be called the child
      protection team this is a team of psychologists and specialists
      and social workers and people that would GO IN where there was a
      problem of abuse of children they no longer exist they're now
      called there's a care and protection coordinator and that's the
      person in charge of that group of people and you have to call a
      <&>1:00</&> FAMILY conference together to do with that child so
      anyone from that child's family can come in <{><[>to the
      conference</[> <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0035:XX>
      <[>the extended family</[></{></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0040:ST>
      yeah extended family or anyone who's even interested somebody
      that mightn't even be a relation but might be wanting to look
      after their child <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0045:XX>
      close <{><[>friend</[>

  <WSC#MUS004:0050:XX>
      <[>or a good friend</[></{></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0055:ST>
      yeah yep anyone like that <,,>

  <WSC#MUS004:0060:ST>
      okay so basically what they've tried to do instead of making
      that child the <.>com</.> the um responsibility of social
      welfare we that child is now the responsibility of their FAMILY
      and the community so someone else in the family a grandparent or
      an auntie or a brother or sister might be able to say i can look
      after that child or i can supervise that child and see that no
      harm is going to come to it and it sounded great sounds like a
      really good idea and then about probably ninety percent of cases
      it's working but there's probably about ten percent of cases
      where it's not working and the the person in charge the big
      chief of this is doctor iain hassel okay <&>2:00</&> and he's
      the government person who's the advocate for children so i guess
      if you wanted to divorce your parents or whatever like this boy
      did in the states he's the person you'd get in touch with so
      overall he's in charge of that okay?

  <WSC#MUS004:0065:ST>
      okay page forty seven <,,><&>3</&>

  <WSC#MUS004:0070:ST>
      have you answered those questions at the end of it to me <&>class
      comments three seconds</&>

  <WSC#MUS004:0075:ST>
      oh okay then so you were supposed to hand it in

  <WSC#MUS004:0080:ST>
      we've done that whole page <&>class agrees</&>

  <WSC#MUS004:0085:ST>
      okay well coming after we've <.>got</.> i've got a reply in the
      mail here from the law society <{1><[1>saying</[1> they can't
      help us BUT telling me to write to that guy doctor iain hassel
      <,,> here we go and giving us his address so that's the next
      thing we'll do

  <WSC#MUS004:0090:ST>
      he's the commissioner of children in wellington and so he'll
      have the facts and figures on the child abuse sexual abuse
      etcetera and they also suggest that we can probably get that
      from the social welfare department so <{2><[2>we might</[2> <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0095:XX>
      <[1>oh did you</[1></{1>

  <WSC#MUS004:0100:XX>
      <[2>do i need to write</[2></{2> another letter</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0105:ST>
      we might just give them a ring yeah <&>3:00</&> <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0110:XX>
      yeah</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0115:ST>
      <{><[>okay so</[> <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0120:XX>
      <[>social welfare?</[></{></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0125:ST>
      yeah so if anyone's got any other questions you want to discuss
      on that topic before we move on to the next one <,,><&>4</&>

  <WSC#MUS004:0130:ST>
      okay <,> well then over the page we've got two flow charts <,,>

  <WSC#MUS004:0135:ST>
      the first one is if a marriage breaks down aha you haven't got
      it <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0140:XX>
      no</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0145:ST>
      and the couple agree yes this is the end of it it's over then it
      can be usually sorted out quite amicably but if they've got
      DISagreements then there's problems so usually what happens here
      <,,>

  <WSC#MUS004:0150:ST>
      who knows how to read flow charts where does this start <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0155:XX>
      oh we start from the top

  <WSC#MUS004:0160:XX>
      from the top there <{><[><unclear>word</unclear> marriage</[></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0165:ST>
      <[>starts at the oh okay thank you <,></[></{> right and then
      they've got a problem they want some changes

  <WSC#MUS004:0170:ST>
      okay they can EITHER <,> have counselling see the counsellor or
      coordinator of the family court then the <&>4:00</&> counsellor
      might send them on <,> might prepare a report who then sends
      them on to see lawyers if that's the way it's going to go who
      draws up a separation agreement OR they may become reconciled

  <WSC#MUS004:0175:ST>
      horo would you just mind turning the photocopy off please <.>i</.>
      that noise is awful ta <,,>

  <WSC#MUS004:0180:ST>
      okay otherwise if they've decided that's it it's all over the
      next step is you've got to have two years apart <,> living apart

  <WSC#MUS004:0185:ST>
      you can't just decide oh they're going to get divorced and go
      and get it at the end of the week

  <WSC#MUS004:0190:ST>
      you've got to actually live apart for two years <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0195:XX>
      what</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0200:ST>
      you need a SEPARATION AGREEMENT because that is when the two
      years starts from when the separation agreement is drawn up but
      if you've been living apart for a couple of years and you've got
      no separation agreement you could have a few problems okay

  <WSC#MUS004:0205:ST>
      then after the two years apart you have this joint application
      and the court grants dissolution that means the divorce <,> and
      that's how it happens

  <WSC#MUS004:0210:ST>
      some of you your parents have been through that haven't they <{><[><,>
      no?</[> <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0215:XX>
      <[>i think so yes</[></{> <&>5:00</&></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0220:ST>
      anyone's parents divorced <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0225:XX>
      how long <.>d</.> you know if you've you've been granted the
      divorce well how how long how long do you got to wait for if you
      want to get remarried about ten seconds</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0230:ST>
      oh immediately <,> <{><[><O>laughs</O> some people do</[> though
      get <laughs>divorced on one day and married</laughs> the same
      day <,>

  <WSC#MUS004:0235:ST>
      what's stupid <,,><&>4</&> <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0240:XX>
      <[>that's stupid</[></{>

  <WSC#MUS004:0245:XX>
      why <unclear>word</unclear></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0250:ST>
      oh it'd be to a different person <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0255:XX>
      oh no i thought <?>you <.>meant</.></?></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0260:ST>
      <softly>yeah <,> it must be to a different person</softly> but
      then you get people like elizabeth taylor who was married to
      richard burton and they got divorced and then she married him
      again and then they got divorced again and she didn't she marry
      him about three times <,>

  <WSC#MUS004:0265:ST>
      she must have just liked parties i think <,,>

  <WSC#MUS004:0270:ST>
      okay over the page <,,><&>3</&> and this is what happens if
      there's a marriage breakdown that the couple disagrees <,> okay

  <WSC#MUS004:0275:ST>
      obviously they want changes in <&>6:00</&> their marriage so
      they go and see a solicitor and you can't see the same solicitor

  <WSC#MUS004:0280:ST>
      when my brother and his wife split up they had this mate that
      was a solicitor <.>and</.> and they thought oh they'd both go to
      this mate because it would be cheaper but the answer was no she
      had to have her own separate solicitor because if you're
      breaking up then the solicitor is working <.>for</.> <,> for
      only one person okay

  <WSC#MUS004:0285:ST>
      if they're working for both of you they might sort of lean
      towards one person more than the other and one person might end
      up with a better deal at the end of it <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0290:XX>
      <unclear>word</unclear></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0295:ST>
      my brother because he <.>worked</.> it <.>was</.> he was a cop
      and <.>he</.> <,> and <.>it</.> yeah cos she's a friend of his
      <unclear>word</unclear> <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0300:XX>
      <?>terry</?></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0305:ST>
      terry yes who else <O>laughs</O> <?>mad</?>

  <WSC#MUS004:0310:ST>
      actually speaking of terry the children the young persons and
      their families act jumping the gun a bit here has changed the
      way the police operate in some instances now because when the
      police are driving down the street SOME police are driving down
      the street and if they see say <&>7:00</&> a young person
      fiddling with car doors or shop doors or whatever they used to
      get out and say what are you up to what's your name where do you
      live you know etcetera etcetera

  <WSC#MUS004:0315:ST>
      now they get out of their car and they say how old are you <,>
      and if they're under sixteen they say have a nice evening see
      you later BECAUSE there's so much hassle they have to go through
      when they're under sixteen

  <WSC#MUS004:0320:ST>
      they've got to call in their families they've got to call in the
      lawyer whereas in the past you could just cart them along to the
      station and deal with them

  <WSC#MUS004:0325:ST>
      do you remember that stephen slavich murder case in paeroa and
      that those two school boys shot that um farmer because they
      wanted to steal his car and they didn't realise that he was
      still sort of jammed in the door of the car and they dragged him
      a couple of kilometres along the road and he got he got killed
      and because he was shot as well but the the dragging along <{><[>the
      road killed him</[> and um both boys got off because the police
      didn't follow the children and young persons and their families
      act things when they arrested them

  <WSC#MUS004:0330:ST>
      they didn't straight away get their families or get a lawyer in
      so their lawyer got them off on the technicality <&>8:00</&> <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0335:XX>
      <[>yeah that was gross</[></{>

  <WSC#MUS004:0340:XX>
      one of the guys didn't</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0345:ST>
      yeah one of them did because he was over sixteen wasn't he but
      the one under sixteen got off on this <,> so you're right <,>

  <WSC#MUS004:0350:ST>
      anyone see bungay on crime last night <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0355:XX>
      yes bungay</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0360:ST>
      he had clever lawyers <,> can sort of um get people off if
      they've got lots of money <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0365:XX>
      he was <unclear>word</unclear></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0370:ST>
      he lives here in rotorua <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0375:XX>
      mm

  <WSC#MUS004:0380:XX>
      what was the <unclear>word</unclear></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0385:ST>
      oh i've actually videoed it so i'll show it to you in english
      because it's to do with media studies <,> because it was like a
      dramatisation <softly>so we'll look at it <?>there</?> mm</softly>

  <WSC#MUS004:0390:ST>
      okay now getting back to marriage breakdowns <,> and the
      solicitors <,> both parties apply for a separation and other
      allied orders

  <WSC#MUS004:0395:ST>
      both parties are supposed to go to counselling and have reports
      written by the counsellor and the counsellor will just say no
      this marriage is over it cannot be reconciled and then one party
      might be having an affair with someone else or <.>th</.> there
      might be violence involved or something <.>they</.> then <.>they're</.>
      after the <&>9:00</&> counselling AGREE to reconcile or separate
      one way or the other or there might be no further action
      required

  <WSC#MUS004:0400:ST>
      after the counselling and the report then a court settlement is
      wanted so the mediation <.>conference</.> <&>pronounced
      conferench</&> conference can be arranged <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0405:XX>
      what's that <,,><&>3</&></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0410:ST>
      that'll be to get this um separation order okay because it's a
      legal document <,> and these consent orders are an agreement to
      either reconcile or separate and that's in WRITING either saying
      they're going to get back together or they're not

  <WSC#MUS004:0415:ST>
      <.>the</.> there may be specialist help required like
      counselling a counsel for the <.>chop</.> children and you
      either end up with a defended hearing or orders made

  <WSC#MUS004:0420:ST>
      the orders could be for a divorce or a a hearing because it
      could be quite complicated discussing who's going to get what
      and all that <&>10:00</&> sort of carry on <,>

  <WSC#MUS004:0425:ST>
      so <.>what</.> what can we learn from this <,,><&>3</&>

  <WSC#MUS004:0430:ST>
      how difficult is it to get married <&>several class members
      reply with comments like very easy etc</&>

  <WSC#MUS004:0435:ST>
      <unclear>word</unclear> get married <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0440:XX>
      oh</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0445:ST>
      it's pretty easy isn't it <,>

  <WSC#MUS004:0450:ST>
      what do you need to get married <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0455:XX>
      a marriage licence</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0460:ST>
      yep <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0465:XX>
      and er</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0470:ST>
      parents' consent if you're under twenty <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0475:XX>
      witness</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0480:ST>
      and money for the party <,,> <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0485:XX>
      fall in <{><[>love</[>

  <WSC#MUS004:0490:XX>
      <[>and <unclear>word</unclear></[></{></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0495:ST>
      but that's <.>all</.> that's all you need the marriage licence
      and that didn't cost very much did it around about <,> forty
      <latch> <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0500:XX>
      five <latch></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0505:ST>
      forty five dollars or something yeah <,> but in order to get
      divorced it's much more complex and complicated
      <with silly voice>so be very careful before you get married</with silly voice>
      <O>laughs</O> <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0510:XX>
      it's hard to imagine if <,> this could ever happen to you</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0515:ST>
      at the time yeah it is <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0520:XX>
      yeah</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0525:ST>
      just get to know the person properly first and don't get married
      too young <,>

  <WSC#MUS004:0530:ST>
      i reckon you should wait till you're twenty five <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0535:XX>
      nah</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0540:ST>
      have your fun first <&>class laughs</&> <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0545:XX>
      how old were YOU when you got married <&>ten minutes forty nine
      seconds to eleven minutes twenty seconds class and teacher
      discuss how old she and her brothers were when they were married</&></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0550:ST>
      okay the next thing we're going to look at is international
      divorce laws <,> the next page <,> er thanks darryl <&>eleven
      minutes thirty seven seconds to eleven minutes fifty eight
      seconds class looks for the right page</&>

  <WSC#MUS004:0555:ST>
      okay we're going to look at other countries <,> <&>12:00</&> and
      see about the different divorce laws in those countries and they
      want to look at muslim countries and remember the muslims um <.>some</.>
      some live in countries that people the women wear the veils on
      their faces or just a little slit eyes and um <{><[>in um
      <unclear>word</unclear></[> <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0560:XX>
      <[><unclear>word</unclear></[></{></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0565:ST>
      <unclear>word</unclear> he's a muslim and <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0570:XX>
      nice bedroom eh</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0575:ST>
      <laughs>nice bedroom yeah and there's one <unclear>word</unclear></laughs>

  <WSC#MUS004:0580:ST>
      we won't comment any further on that <O>laughs</O> um and in
      some muslim countries men can have as many wives as they like
      BUT they have to be able to provide for them so they can't just
      have you know seven wives if they can't provide for them all

  <WSC#MUS004:0585:ST>
      they've got to be able to feed and clothe them and look after
      them so if they can only afford to have one wife then that's all
      they can have <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0590:XX>
      mm</X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0595:ST>
      okay when you get married in a muslim country <&>13:00</&> you
      draw up a legal contract and you might say in your legal
      contract i want brass fittings right through my house or i want
      <.>a</.> <,> a brick letter box i mean you could put in
      something really ridiculous if you wanted and if your husband
      backs over the letter box one day and it's gone well then you
      can say the marriage is over because you've broken the contract
      and you don't need to go through complex divorce cases and
      things

  <WSC#MUS004:0600:ST>
      if the contract is broken then that's it and you might put in
      the contract no mucking around okay er no other wives <,,> i'm
      the only one and if he goes and gets another wife then as far as
      you're concerned the contract's over and you're out of it <X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0605:XX>
      far out <&>thirteen minutes thirty eight seconds to thirteen
      minutes fifty six seconds class comment on the idea of islamic
      marriages</&></X>

  <WSC#MUS004:0610:ST>
      okay in china if the couple agree to divorce <&>14:00</&> they
      can register their divorce with the district people's government
      <&>14:03</&>
</I>
