Originally unaware of the EEBO version of the original 1516 edition, we
used an 1811 reprint of it (see next paragraph) as the basis for the
Penn samples. The versions differ with regard to pagination as
indicated in the sample selection; we have not attempted to maintain
continuous pagination across the Helsinki and Penn samples.
From the titlepage of the reprint: "Reprinted from Pynson's edition of
1516. The first part collated with the editions of 1533, 1542, and 1559;
and the second with a manuscript of the author's own time, as well as the
subsequent editions: including the different continuations. To which are
added a biographical and literary preface, and an index, by Henry Ellis." |
