Text name Julian of Norwich's Revelations of Divine Love File name cmjulnor.m34 Manuscript Additional 37790, British Library, London Date c1450 (c1400) Dialect East Midlands Genre Religious treatise Edition Beer, Frances. 1978. Julian of Norwich's revelations of divine love: The shorter version edited from B.L. Add. Ms 37790. Middle English Texts 8. Heidelberg: Winter. Sample Pp. 48-62 Remarks Julian of Norwich was born in 1342. She was still alive in 1416, living as a recluse at St. Julian's Church in Norwich. When she was 30, she suffered a near-fatal illness during which she had the visions described in Revelations of Divine Love. The shorter version of the revelations (this text) was probably set down soon after the event. About 20 years later a longer version was written.
Beer (p. 14) remarks about the language of the text, "One might assume that the dialect of the Amherst Revelations would be that of the Norfolk region; in fact, it shows marked northern features, with scattered East Midlands characteristics. It could possibly be argued the Julian herself, or her amanuensis, was from the North; the more likely explanation, as an examination of the text suggests, is that the mixed nature of the language is the result of several stages of transmission."
