Remarks

The earlier part of the text (1070-1121) and the First Continuation was written by a single scribe. He copied the earlier material found in other copies of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and then added the First Continuation, probably all at once soon after 1131. The scribe was a faithful copyist of the earlier material, but did not himself control the OE system well (see Allen, p. 170). The Final (or Second) Continuation (1132-1154) was added by a second scribe all at one time, probably soon after 1154.

According to Clark (p. xxx), the First Continuation "is strongly marked by the dialect of the district where it was written, and, moreover, offers some of the earliest examples preserved of distinctively Middle-English accidence and syntax". Allen (pp. 170-176) demonstrates that the early material, the First Continuation, and the Final Continuation all differ in their case-marking systems, showing a progressive deterioration with some interference in the First Continuation from the West-Saxon standard.

The parse is based on the translation in Rositzke.
