The following description of this collection was provided by Andrew Wilkin when the texts were first deposited with the Oxford Text Archive in 1977:

The six short stories in Italian, here presented in computer-readable form, were all written by the Sicilian novelist, short-story-writer and dramatist, Giovanni Verga (1840 - 1922) in the period 1880 - 1881. The first five tales ("Cavalleria Rusticana", "La Lupa", "L&sq;amante di Gramigna", "Guerra di Santi" and "Pentolaccia") having each been published individually during 1880, were then re-published (augmented by other tales) as a collection entitled "Vita dei Campi" (Milan, August - September, 1880 ). The sixth tale, "Il Reverendo", was first published in October 1881, and then in a collection entitled "Novelle Rusticane" (Turin, 1883). ... The text used is that published in Giovanni Verga , "Tutte le Novelle, Vol. 1", Biblioteca Moderna Mondadori, Milan, 1967, 8th Edition.

This selection of Verga&sq;s "Novelle" has been prepared for computer analysis by Andrew Wilkin , Lecturer in Italian Studies , University of Strathclyde, Glasgow G1 1XH, from whom further details may be obtained of studies already performed on this data.
