<&>Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English Version One <&>Copyright 1998 School of Linguistics & Applied Language Studies <&>Victoria University of Wellington <&>side one <&>9:06 i think russia's the way for new zealand in the future yeah? yeah <{1><[1>more than asia i do i think that's where the doors are <{2><[2>gonna really open up once russia gets back on its feet i think <{3><[3>new zealand could get in there i mean an opening's gonna come up <{4><[4>i mean it's gonna be like japan where at the time suddenly japan opened up <{5><[5>and the people who were there at the right time with the language the skills or <.>the <{6><[6>got in there and really did well for themselves and i think it's gonna happen with russia <[1>why <[2>voc <[3>yeah <[4>right <[5>mm <[6>yeah yeah oh it's a huge market isn't it it's a HUGE market and as soon <{><[>as it opens up <[>thing is that it's got no money at the moment yeah but they WILL have <{1><[1>i mean half oh yeah i do <,> yeah i think they'll <.>s i mean i'm not talking one or two years <{2><[2>you know five or ten years when we're sort of finishing you know when we're finishing up i think <[1>you reckon <[2>no yeah five or ten years laughs i'm intending to be finished before five or ten years yeah yeah i guess for me because i'm going away for two <{><[>years it sort of puts things off a bit <&>10:00 <[>yeah true and i mean like yeah <,> i finish in two <,> two and a half years is that right <{><[>i get SO confused about well i've just about finished my third year <[>word are you <.>gon you're going to take a year off though and go overseas aren't you i don't KNOW i might <,> i'll see what happens but i might wait till i've actually finished both my degrees before i go overseas mm but i'll see yeah i don't know i don't know i sort of feel that if i finished both my degrees and THEN went by the time i've finished both my <{><[>degrees i want to get into the workforce and have some money cos i'll be sick of being a god damn poor student word <[>yeah yeah that's true and i know if i go NOW then i'm really getting something out of my system as well yeah no i think this is an ideal time to go <{><[>i think it's a really really good idea <[>yeah so do i <{1><[1>i think it's perfect especially at THIS age <{2><[2>young free absolutely NO responsibility <[1>yeah <[2>yeah yeah yeah i KNOW it's the right thing yeah and also i won't get into a nine to five job and be thinking OH i want to TRAVEL and what am i doing and yeah <&>11:00 oh varsity now this and <{><[>yeah <[>yeah <,> yeah no i mean i think i can't decide when i've finished my both both the degrees whether i want to go to japan for two years or whether i want to go to france japan would be more sensible it would eh DEFinitely it would be pretty heavy though it would be more sensible i could probably get a scholarship to go to japan as well i would do it yeah but getting a scholarship to go to france would be harder what i could do is a get an assistante ship <{><[>which would be teaching at a french school that would be awesome it would be so much fun <[>yeah yeah it would actually on the other hand i could go and study in japan for a year or two <,,> and then i think i'd actually be able to speak japanese which would <{><[>be really cool laughs <[>i would i would do the japanese one yeah i know that's what everyone says laughs france would be more fun HEAPS more fun that would be GREAT yeah <,> but i don't know <,> i mean like japanese is more <&>12:00 important for our country yeah <,,> well can't you do one year of each like what i'm doing i mean german's pretty irrelevant really to <{1><[1>new zealand but i <{2><[2>LIKE it so i'm going for a year <[1>oh <[2>yeah i know yeah yeah i know it's just russia and and germany are a wee bit closer than france and japan but do you know the new <.>di the new um director of the alliance is um a japanese <,> <.>speak i mean he speaks fluent japanese really bizarre eh he's not the guy from quebec i <{><[>don't think so he was brought up in the states <[>no oh right speaks fluent english speaks french as well and he was <.>d i think he studied in tokyo oh wow so he speaks french english and japanese impressive yeah it is well when i've finished my law degree i want to speak spanish french russian and german fluently yeah well why not mm <&>13:00 don't aim low mm no <{><[>word <[>laughs well after this TAPE <{><[>laughs i'm going to do my german <[>laughs yeah and then i'm going to gavin's are you did he ring i rung him oh laughs as soon as i left your place <{1><[1>and do YOU know what this <{2><[2>is SO bizarre <[1>oh <[2>what what PAM and gavin <{><[>MET at that twenty first <[>yeah oh right because did i tell you pam was going out there and mike and i had a fair idea cos i said gavin's gone out to the wairarapa yeah and he said so has pam <{><[>i went oh my god i wonder if it's the same party it WAS well <[>oh right oh no mike was you know how i was on the phone here and <{><[>mike was saying that they met <[>yeah yeah and all this all these <{1><[1>lies and i was sitting there going RUBBISH well i went home and asked her and she said no they did and <&>garbling noise and i thought i'm ringing and <{2><[2>i went and i said <,> heard a very bizarre story about you gavin watkins and um he <{3><[3>said <[1>yeah yeah <[2>laughs <[3>what did he SAY he said YES i KNOW i met PAM <&>14:00 <{1><[1>laughs and she told me all sorts of things about myself <{2><[2>and i went oh no how embarrassing <[1>laughs <[2>laughs like what he said i know all about me now that's classic emBARrassing i wanted to <.>t try and <{><[>get hold of pam <[>but i mean but what did she say to him she said things that I'D said about him but i don't know what he wouldn't tell me were they nice things oh well you've only said nice things <{><[>about him <[>yeah well that was the thing i well that's why i was embarrassed cos they she probably said that i really liked him and stuff well what's the problem then well that's what he like i said oh how embarrassing and he said no it's good laughs oh that's really sweet <,> mm cool but mike was being so awful about it mike i <.>did i don't know what to believe cos mike just makes up all these stories all the time he's impossible <{><[>eh he is <,> <[>laughs tut do you know what else <{1><[1>laughs ROBIN last night at this dance party <{2><[2>at street told megan our next door neighbour that anthea and i fight <&>15:00 over timothy <,> <{3><[3>i know embarrassing and um she said yeah there's you know other people that like him up the road and blah blah blah blah blah <{4><[4>and do you know what i did i rung up kathy who robin really likes the other girl i pointed to um out <[1>what laughs <[2>yeah <[3>oh <[4>yeah yeah well i know her quite well and i rung up <{><[>and i went yeah and <[>do you know kathy oh really invited her round for dinner and robin's cooking said my flatmate robin would like to cook laughs you did that i did <{1><[1>word laughs he was so embarrassed well first of all we told him that MIKE did it that i was friends with kathy and then mike pretended to be him on the phone and we're saying things like now kathy i think you're a smashing girl and he was getting so embarrassed laughs <{2><[2>laughs serves him RIGHT though laughs telling those lies and rubbish <[1>oh my god <[2>oh that's AWful you guys are horrible but i thought it was anthea that <.>t <{><[>oh <[>yeah not ME so now THEY think that i anthea and i have disputes <&>16:00 over who's going to get timothy <{><[>i don't want timothy <[>laughs oh no <{><[>that's really funny i didn't know that you knew kathy <[>oh dear yeah i like <{><[>her <[>why cos she was the one that nearly flatted with us yeah yeah mm mm she's nice yeah she's really sweet <{><[>eh <[>mm word i didn't have any choice laughs no yeah that's sort of how i felt a wee bit but yeah yeah no i mean she handled the whole thing about how she pulled out she handled that really badly really really badly KATHY did? oh what happened oh she just like um <,> tut suddenly the first thing that me or karen <.>smith heard about it was we were at jenny and lara's twenty first and karen owens came and said look um something i want to say er i was talking to kathy the other night <&>17:00 or something and um <,> tut and she said not to tell you but i thought you guys should know that she's not that she doesn't she's not going to flat with us any more next year and we said WHAT cos this is like this this is like the beginning of november like two weeks before final application you know before you had to accept and we said OH laughs and she said yeah well um mary's cos mary was going um down south <.>w and <.>ch kathy thought that she should tell mary before mary left so mary just came down and told her that she didn't that they weren't going to go flatting any more and she said oh don't tell liz and karen cos i want to tell them mySELF um but and karen said but i thought you guys should know as soon as possible cos i mean cos karen smith was leaving as well quite soon yeah and then and we thought oh right okay and then we waited for kathy to call us and she <.>mu voc she must have waited about another week before she actually rang us <,> it was really bad and she didn't have i mean like the REASONS she gave were pretty what were they <&>18:00 oh she'd had glandular fever she'd been really really sick and she said oh i've been really really sick and and i don't know if i'm coming back to vic next year and and i'm i don't think i i want to flat in a BIG flat with five people oh no but she just handled it really really badly oh so you sort of hold a grudge <{><[>with her <[>I don't i mean i was just like oh well that was pretty stupid you could have done that better but i mean like karen owens just about won't talk to her karen smith was really upset about it too cos that's <{><[>i mean that's just really bad manners and stuff and karen's quite inhales thinks it being well you know i mean and it was it was really bad manners <[>mm mm oh dear but no I think she's lovely <{><[>she was at the um opening of the city art gallery when me and darren went the other night <[>yeah i think she's nice too yeah no i've always really liked her mm <,> gavin REALLY likes her laughs clears throat that's really funny it is eh <&>19:00 how bizarre i wonder whether she'd be interested who's matthew <,,> matthew govett is he from the hostel <{><[>as well <[>yeah cos i think he knows gavin well yeah course <{><[>he would are they friends <[>yeah i don't know does he know her matthew's okay actually of that crowd he would be one of the few that i sort of i mean he's yeah <,,> there's a hole in your trousers no i've got my fingernail on my trousers <{><[>so it wouldn't flick on to your carpet <[>exhales <{><[>tut that's touching anna thank you um tut yeah no matthew's he's another law student <,> tut but yeah oh he's okay <[>laughs mm plays rugby but you can't necessarily hold that against a person oh i don't know <{1><[1>laughs i tend to <{2><[2>laughs <[1>laughs
