Remarks

A translation of the Latin anchorite rule De Institutione Inclusarum (written by Aelred de Rievaulx c1160). This manuscript contains only the last twenty sections. It has been localized to Worcestershire (McIntosh) or more exactly, halfway between Worcester and Birmingham (Samuels). Staffordshire and Warwickshire have also been argued for. The language seems to argue for the more southern locations. The language of the text includes many Western and West Midland features as well as Southern, Northern and East Midland. Ayto and Barratt hypothesize that (at least) two previous versions of the text existed, one predominantly South-Eastern and one Northern. They seem to consider it predominantly a West Midlands text, despite Helsinki classifying it as South.

A later, complete, independent version of this text appears in MS Bodley 423.
