Text name The Lambeth Homilies File name cmlambx1.mx1 Manuscript Lambeth 487, Lambeth Palace, London Date a1225 (Laing: C12b2 (c1200), Hand B is slightly later ?1225) Dialect West Midlands (M.L. Samuels, cited in Laing: border of North Herefordshire and Shropshire) Genre Homilies Edition Morris, Richard. 1969. Old English homilies and homiletic treatises. Part I. EETS O.S. 29, 34. New York: Greenwood Press. Originally published by Trübner (London, 1868). Sample Exhaustive sample of prose homilies Remarks cmlambx1.mx1 contains homilies i-v and ix-xiii. Homilies vii-viii and xiv-xvii are contained in cmlamb1.m1. Homily vi (rhymed) is not included in the corpus.
Fols 1r-65r are written by Hand A and fols 65v-67r by Hand B. Five sermons are shared with the Trinity Homilies as follows:
Lambeth vii = Trinity iv L xiii = T xxvi L xv = T xxxii L xvi = T xxx L xvii = T xxv The homilies in this group (MX1) are a compilation of older documents from the 11th century that have been transliterated. Homilies ix and x are transliterations of two of Ælfric's Homilies of the same title. Homily xi includes a passage from Ælfric (pp. 121-122), and Homily xii includes most of Wulfstan's Be Godcundre Warnunge. The source of the remainder is unknown. Based on their use of the same mode of address and similar theme, Wells (p. 279) supposes that the first five homilies may have been written by the same author (following Morris, who concluded that the first six were by the same author), but Sisam (p. 106) convincingly refutes this view. She demonstrates that the homilies were copied from two different exemplars with different orthographies, both of the 12th century but one probably earlier than the other. Of these two exemplars, the older (the source of the MX1 group) contains revisions of OE material, while the later (the source of the M1 group) is unlikely, in Sisam's view, to contain any Old English material. For notes on the provenance of the manuscript, see Wilson. The sample consists of the complete homilies apart from Homily vi, The Rhymed Pater Noster.
The parse is based on Morris's translation.
